Ethics clip, Sgpro/dvx.

Hey dudes, I shoot with the first batch of dvx's, the dvx-100(E). It has been good to me for all these years and is still going strong.

pfista: I am honoured by your saved folder :)
My scene file settings are as followed(keep in mind that since I have the first verison dvx I dont have as many settings as the "a" or "b" model):

Detail: "- 4"
Master ped: "- 6"
Gamma: "normal"
Matrix: "normal"
And everything else set to "0".

- CHeers!

Hey Smettli, have you got any stone cold tips for achieving great images like that?

I use near identical settings on my DVX100AE (with an M2 and a 50mm f/1.8) and my stock images doesn't look as nice. I'm happy with them, and I feel like I know my way around the camera/adapter enough, but yours look really really nice and I want mine to look that much better.

Anyway, thanks for showing the before and after picks, it's good to see unadjusted stuff.

*two thumbs up*

Hey Smettli,

There's not much I can say that others haven't. Your work is great. Really enjoy watching it.

Do you use the DVX pal version?

All the best,

holy crap that was so good, for a second there i was like "this isnt a dvx, this is film" the cloudy sky definately helped a lot but even more the camera work was waaay good.

WOW! Smettli your progressing nicely!! havent seen any of your stuff for ages.

I really love the feel of this setup you've got. Especially having it on the shoulder. I think the subetly in the movement adds something which shooting from the hip doesnt. I really love the bit when the two cop cars pull in and there's just that really spontaneous pan to the car on the right.

Very nice!!! are you using pentax lenses for any particular reason? I generally hire nikons.

SOmething I dont like id when the two cops run at the guy I get the feeling the guy on the left is smiling/grinning.

Thanks for your comments guys! I'm all about old school ;)
There are a few things I always try to keep in mind when shooting, when shooting with a 50mm lens I always try to stay at f 2.8 and I always try to keep the image as bright as possible, the darker the image, the more noise I get.
I'm not a big fan of doing wide shots so I usually stay close, I find it more interesting and detailed and it helps you make the acting looks better, there's nothing harder then acting within a wideshot full body exposed. And the close shots allows you to get nice and shallow depth of field. In the background(in the bokeh)I always search for edges and objects that may reflect some light and will create rings and other playful shapes. But in the end it's mostly about reading your situation and surroundings and improvise, either I'm directing or holding a camera I would always want to give the camera guy the main points to get in frame and then improvise within that as we go. It gives the kind of feeling that the actors are doing something unexpected when the camera is one step behind or chasing the object, like in documentaries. Rather do a lot of takes with improvised moves, then planning a shot to hell. Makes it more fun and exciting. And yes, the control of a cloudy exterior allows for more playful camera moves.
When it comes to "looks", it's mostly about adapter and lens(apart from lighting). I have never tried the M2, but I remember I was following the homemade adapter "evolution"(yes, big word, but it changed a lot for many) for many years before deciding what to get. I was never really satisfied with the look of the adapters(except for the g35 which kinda went quiet) until I saw a clip of footage shot by the creator of the sgpro were he was testing out one of those "wheels" to mount your camera on and shot some footage in a classroom. That footage was shot in natural light and instantly reminded me of 16mm film. That's when I decided to get one :)
But then again you see the look of sgpro footage varies a lot depending on what camera and lenses were used. And in the end it's a matter of taste of what look you like, were some love the dreamy look of footage shot at
1/25th shutter speed, while I hate it. One thing that is for shure is that you should get a nice lens for your setup, and I'm really liking the qualities of my pentax 55mm f 1.2 lens, the best I have tried. But enough of my sujective blabbering :)
And yes, I have the PAL dvx-100, were people are also debating the difference in look between the NTSC version.

Thanks!

morgz: Haha, I agree. The shadows in his face makes him appear as grinning, but he really isn't :)
I simply chose to go with pentax lenses because I've been using an analoge pentax mx still camera with pentax lenses for quite some time.

Let me answer one here, I have the DVX100AE and for a time a M2 also, but I sold my M2 cause the bad image compared with SGpro. You can’t get that nice sharp footage shown in the thread with a M2.

And simply put it; DVX100AE has more noise than either 100E or 100BE. And with a M2 on top of that, a large amount of noise is a fact.
But as far as it goes, much light and the noise will not be to disturbing.

And you can teach from Smett here

Thanks for the link! Will come in handy.

Tommetass: I shoot with the "shutter off"(1/50) except when I'm shooting for slow motion in 50i, then 1/120. I got my 55mm for roughly 200 dollars (1250 NOK inkludert frakt og toll).
Interesting that the dvx100AE has more noise than the first version, quite the upgrade from the pana guys, huh? :)

- Cheers!

Hmm, that doesn't bode too well. I get nice images from my DVXAE/M2, but nothing as clean as Smettli's stuff.

I best starting saving then. ;)

love the video man, always dig the stuff you shoot.. how much did the SGPro cost you with lenses and everything? really impressed by the video. keep up the good work.

Yes, I desaturated the footage in post, or I tinted it forward to grey to be correct.

jgastelb: Thanks! I tested it and it works very well :)

KDunne: Thanks man, The whole setup(except the dvx) inkluding sgpro, lenses, lcd monitor and cavision mounting cost me roughly about 2250 US dollars.

For the reds my preferred work flow (using Sony Vegas) is to cut everything together, then once I am ready to render it out as one file, I will slap a chroma blur filter on the master effects bus and then output to an uncompressed .avi. From there, I will use that file to output everything from DVD to web delivery. It takes up a lot of space, but it is the best way I have found to deal with the problem.
