Error -36 during P2 drag and drop to external

man, im wondering if your firewire port/board in your camera is dying?
and have you tried this on mutiple macs? or just the one?

again, i say try doing it via USB. ive ALWAYS had better (more predictable) results with USB vs firewire.

Btw, drag and drop is NOT the accepted way to move P2 data to the hard drive for editing. You should always lock the card before connecting to your Mac. Transfer the clips using Panasonic P2 CMS. This has been pointed out time and time again under the p2 workflow thread. According to Jan at Panasonic drag and drop is an ify proposition as it is easy for the data structure to become corrupt.
i dont want to start another fight on this issue. but FWIW, i call horsecrap on this. i have been drag and drop copying on various macs with various p2 cameras for 4 years now and ive never write protected a card and ive never had so much as a glitch - aside from the above mentioned hit and miss firewire connectivity ; )

I haven't tried it on another Mac, but the port has worked fine with my DVX every time, but that is from tape rather than HD from card. It'd suck if the firewire was on the fritz, because I just bought the camera and spent a fair amount (and, according to the incredibly obnoxious guy on CreativeCow, because it's Japanese, the year of warranty left won't work in the US).

I appreciate your advice, but I'll admit I'm ignorant to what you mean about trying USB. I have a firewire cable, miniDV to firewire (6 pin to 4 pin) and that was the only way I was aware of to connect the DVX or HVX to the system.

its pretty easy to fry the firewire port on an hvx by plugging the firewire cable into it while the camera is powered on.

i think u need to do some more detective work before we commit to any specific issue.

1. try turning the write protect toggle on the card on and off a couple times. then leave it in unprotected mode. and try another firewire transfer
2. switch the camera into usb device rather than firewire device mode. (its in the menu, i forget what page on the 200 maybe in OTHER) and see if that works.
3. if you have FCP or adobe on location try to do a live capture via firewire. see if you get sound an picture.

I try not to do that. How difficult is it to get repaired?
yeah, but if u bought it used, there is no way of knowing if the previous owner did.

as far as i know its a send in for service situation.

I had tried the write protect toggle. At this point, with "1394 Initial Error," I don't think it's gonna matter much. But I did try, and got the same results.

I tried the "1394 HOST" and the other 1394 setting. I think those are the different settings, no go.

Even without a firewire plugged in, I get "1394 Initial Error," and a blinking icon that I believe means a firewire/1394 issue.

Panasonic still won't call me back. It seems their techs are only in during the full moon when it lands of a Wednesday, though their phone support guys are there every day to confirm that my ticket is in and waiting for the actual techs to get back.

If nothing else, I'm going to start the process for a return. This camera has been nothing but trouble.

id go to the nearest computer / office / big box store and grab a mini usb to usb cable.
unless you ever have a need to shoot live to a computer or firestore, you could actually get by fine forever without a firewire port as long as your usb works.

or you could spend $350 for panasonics external usb P2 reader and never have to use the camera for transfer at all

i prefer usb for mac transferring anyway

Even with the cable disconnected (mini usb to firewire), I get 1394 Initial Error or the blinking icon. Is USB going to be 1394, as well?

there isn't a usbmini to firewire cable in existence. You really need to look at that manual. in your menu( in camera mode ) u must switch that cam from firewire to usb, then change to p2 mode, then hold the button til USB connect appears in viewfinder. 1394 is firewire, not usb.

I suggest rereading the responses in this thread.

1. Using the menu, change from firewire connect to usb connect.

2. Purchase a mini USB to USB cable.

3. Attach cable to cam and computer. Turn on the cam, and mount is according to the manual.

Dude, RTFM.

I hate responses like this. What do you think you're contributing? I appreciate you responding, but jesus. This error message is pretty specific, both the FCP/Mac error message and the 1394 error, and neither are in the manual.

MiniDV to firewire, my apologies.

My settings are correct, as per than manual, thanks. I don't have a USB cable at the moment. If the firewire port is BROKEN, then I'm just going to return it. This camera has been nothing positive.
