Error -36 during P2 drag and drop to external

Every time I try to drag and drop the files from the P2 card via firewire to my external, I get "Error -36" and that the files are write protected and cannot be copied. Any ideas?

Are you trying to move individual files, or folders?

Drag the entire Contents folder along with the LastClip.txt file. You want to keep all of it intact.

That's a Mac error code.

Is the external drive formatted as HTFS+? In theory it shouldn't matter if it's HTFS+ or FAT32, as the P2 cards are FAT32, but maybe there's something there.

I'm on a Mac. The external is HTFS+, Mac OS Journaled. I've also tried exporting it to the internal harddrive of the machine, same issue. I called Panasonic but they're out for the weekend. Sometimes I get the error, sometimes it just gets a GB or so in and stalls indefinitely.

They're just files like any other; it's not a Panasonic issue. Somehow, it has to do with how OS X treats or reads the files.

Well, I called Apple about it, and took it in to the Apple Store, and they told me to call Panasonic because it mostlikely is an issue with how the camera handles the files.

If that were the case, you'd get the error in the same place and every time. You say you don't, so something else is going on. (But even if a file is write-protected, you should be able to copy it.)

Detail the exact steps you're taking at every point along the way. Screen shots would help if you can provide them.

There's not much to it. Plug the camera into the firewire port, turn it on, go from camera to vcr mode, hold down the button to go to import mode, wait for it to say "connect," drag and drop the folder and txt file to the external HD. At some point, it locks up and I get that error. The only screenshot I can really imagine sending you of any of that is of the error itself.

Copy to your desktop first.

Then copy to the external. See if that works.

By any chance are you daisy chaining camera to the firewire drive?

Which Mac are you using, and what two firewire ports on your mounting the drive on and the camera on?

Yes, I've tried to my desktop and to the external. Same result. I've also tried doing the txt file first and then the folder, as some said that makes the transfer faster. Same result.

I'm connecting the camera, via firewire cable and it's miniDV port, directly to the firewire port on the Macbook.

It's Macbook with 10.5.8.

-36 Error is a general drive read error message. Usually it means the drive has either failed, the drive directory is corrupt or the data is corrupt.

Btw, drag and drop is NOT the accepted way to move P2 data to the hard drive for editing. You should always lock the card before connecting to your Mac. Transfer the clips using Panasonic P2 CMS. This has been pointed out time and time again under the p2 workflow thread. According to Jan at Panasonic drag and drop is an ify proposition as it is easy for the data structure to become corrupt.

I have had the -36 Error a number of times on 10.6.3. For me a restart fixes it, or chaining FW800 drives to the internal port FW800 of a MBP rather than an express 34 card usually does it. I have also had to use the "dot_clean" method, but that was cleared up with an OSX update.

Hopefully that helps you.

Correct. Or, P2 Viewer in Windows.

The last time I installed P2 CMS, random parts of my system became write protected, the system became incredibly slow, and it crashed until I had to reformat the drive, and the the next day, when it crashed again, replace it. Where can I get it safely? I've heard of problems getting it from places that aren't Panasonic, and I can't find it on their site.

Nope.

P2MCS has stopped at like a gig and a half of transfer. It transfered quickly and then just stopped at that point. I'm afraid to disconnect it or anything, but eventually the battery will run out.
