FEATURE: Epitaph: Bread and Salt Feature film

Actually it's funny because she was coming to audition Saturday. She was like, "Oh I got something to do in the city Saturday morning anyway." And it's clicked in my head what she would probably be doing, so I was like, "Oh going to the Contagion extras casting too? I'll be there." So it seems I was right on the money. I met her coming out as she was going in she's like, "Hey Nate." So we chatted for a sec. I also met another girl I don't know personally, but we're FB friends, though I don't really know how or why. LOL. And I also bumped into Yohanni (Ashen) on the way out. And speaking of Yohanni...

Hey guys, if you want to get more info on the film check out our DPs Blog, to get the story from the DPs perspective. This is Adam's first job as a DP. He's a skilled photographer and one of the best I've seen. I met him on the set of JR2's production of "The Wait". His specialty is lighting and commercial photography. He sits up most of the shots. And he did the shots I used for the posters.

None of those are. She drops me off in front of my house in the film so we shot it in front of my house. LOL. The actress actually got a parking spot by my apartment which we shot the scene. We did greenscreen in the back of my building (I'm going to put her in a motel parking lot) and no one bothered us. Then she managed to get another parking spot by the building, came up stairs and did some ADR just incase. Talked about a blessed day, you know how hard it is to find parking on the Northside of Chicago, not to mention consecutively. Seriously, I'm very thankful how this is all turning out. We're more organized and we're shooting quicker. Friday is the first fight scene.

On top of that I figured the 5DM2 sound out. It's working perfectly and I'm creating both channels of sound versus one channel of audio and another of silenced hiss. I changed a setting on the beachtech and I got no hiss channel. But now I have to work this greenscreen out so it looks real. Right now it's looks okay but not real enough for me. Right now if someone said here's a budget buy a video camera, but you only have a few grand to do it the 5DM2 would be it, or something very similar. Our DPs photography's skills are really showing though on this.

I was only holding back because of sound concerns. I switched all the Beachtek settings to "mic" and in the last things I shot come into FCP with dual audio tracks with the same sound on each track. I ran the LowPass audio filter and the sound was fine. Until now I believed everyone when they said the sound was unusable.

Am I wrong for loving this shot? Come on, you can tell me.

A very common "mistake".... double audiotracks.

You DO NOT need to have "double tracks" with the same sound....

STEREO is not the same as "2 times the same track in mono, one panned left and another one panned right".

STEREO is, left and right actualy different sounds... if you record in stereo you always have 2 mices. So maybe at the left side you hear... a barking dog...at the right side.... a moawing cow...and in center... some cars...

Dialogues are always mono, because they've to come out of the center. So always one track, panned in center.

Actually. this is NOT true. Many times we record two tracks from one microphone for one reason, we set the gain on the second channel to be -12dB down from the first. This way, if for some reason we get an over (clip) on a good take on the first channel, we can fix it with or -12dB safety track. A lot of professionals do this, as you are right, most people record dialog mono only because dialog is mono on release.

We do this too when we shoot basic video productions with standard equipment. But if you have pro equipment they usually have a limiter within the unit so you don't have to worry about spikes.

Very true, some of my gear has limiters as well. Although, truth be told, I'm not always happy with the attack/release of some limiters and many don't allow you to change that. But, given most of this equipment is SUPER quiet anyways, just not having any clipping means i can tune it up very easily in post even after it is digital and still be satisfied with the results.

Nate, that shot looks really good, but the only nit-pick I see are the clouds. They look like the cloud filter in photoshop. Everything else is excellent. And very clean. I don't see any green at all.

Then it's money. But I still want to work on it a bit more. Something's not sitting right with the whole piece yet.

Yes, they are photoshop clouds, but they move and everything. LOL. I learned how to make clouds in Photoshop and make them move like real ones.

First images from yesterdays fight scene, Locke versus the demonic assassin Satsu. Special thanks to Joseph who walked three hours to get to set and got here at exactly 9:00 am. We couldn't have done it without him. And of course our DP Adam Daniels whose constantly popping out great images.
