GH4 EOSHD Pro color for GH4

To get this thread back on track :-)

Scopes make it pretty easy to see what ProColor LUT is and is not doing.

It's a warm, saturated look that rolls-off the highlights and lifts the shadows. TaDa! It's just a "look". Should you apply it to everything you shoot before grading? Heck no!

Raising blacks and lowering highlights does not create more dynamic range. Pumping red saturation and moving orange towards red and green towards yellow doesn't make the color better, just different (and technically less accurate.)

Is it worth $15 to you? Maybe, but you should first look at all of the great look packages that already exist.

Woah! That looks... pretty terrible. I'm actually surprised it looks that bad. I figured it would at least look accurate-ish. Oh well, good for me! :D

Thanks for sharing and taking the leap.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Canon Color isn't accurate, never was. their colour science are designed to make Caucasian skin-tones look "good" at the expense of color accuracy.
I'm surprised that anyone actually takes anything from Andrew Reid and EOSHD seriously. That Blog is solely a source of comic relief, personal opinions posted as and masquerading as alleged "fact".

Think you took that the wrong way Paul, we all owe you the 6 pack.
Hehe! :D

I owe Joe for taking the fall and buying the EOSHD LUT, otherwise I was going to buy it to do my own comparison, even though I'd probably be told I was biased when I presented the results!

You guys don't owe me anything - I appreciate you all buying my LUT and also keeping me honest and doing my best to get each camera as accurate as possible :)

Cheers all,

Paul :)

I get that it's your LUT and all but you probably can't comment without trying it out. I've used it a bit and I have to say it is handy if you want to do a quick grade, especially as a starting point for getting the skin tones looking attractive. I'm not going to argue and say it is technically accurate or anything, all I can talk about is the results I am getting. Basically what it offers is an easy solution for getting a good image for $15. I'd say a fair few people would be interested in that, even though it doesn't do anything to the DR. I personally prefer Canon colors and I get if others don't, but if you do this gets you close some of the times.

Here is a small clip I did with my mum eating some cake and speaking in Serbian. I know the content isn't the most imaginative but that's not the point. The password is: EOSHD

Nobody is arguing that it isn't useful as a possible quick, stylistic LUT in your color grading arsenal. But the creator of the LUT claims so much more, and that's with which I take exception, and felt the need to show otherwise.

Ye, I agree with you. I'll just quote him on the DR: "The EOSHD Pro Color LUT brings out so much*shadow detail from the Standard profile, recovers the crushed blacks, recovers the*clipped highlights - they are still there in the codec but for whatever reason aren't there when you view the files in your NLE or media player!!" Personally, I'm not sure how this is possible but if someone more learned than me is willing to have a stab, I'd like to hear what they have to say.
I can upload an ungraded clip but it is in standard profile and just looks terrible; there's nothing really to be gained by looking at it. I'd rather be comparing it to the results I get from CineD, but then I only shot it in standard.

That's that statement, /along with him recommending you not use 0-255, that makes me think he doesn't understand how Premiere mishandles luminance levels and that other NLE's don't necessarily.
