Envision & RebeccaD Present "Berlin"

Well we recorded Rebecca's vocal performance this past Tuesday night. I was a TAD nervous about the results (I didn't let this on to her, however, lol) as we were going to be recording her performance in my office. I'll try to get some BTS shots up in the next week or so ... after I get a new camera, since one of my kids just shattered the LCD screen on our current one.

Anyway, I bought a bunch of furniture moving pads, and nailed them all about my desk area in my office (even nailing/covering the ceiling) creating approximately a 6 foot squared "booth". I then took additional pads & covered every hard surface that was visible (desk, monitor, etc.), and even put one on the floor to cover the plastic mat that the chair rolls on ... she was pretty well contained in the best padded booth I could create on short notice.

Set up the AKG 480b/CK63 Hyper Cardiod combo with a pop-filter, and recorded two channels into the DVX at slightly different levels, incase she clipped out in the high ends. We had to pull it in at a reduced bit rate compared to Herman's 24bit WAV file of the music, since the DVX can only record at a maximum of 16bit, but I think it still sounds really good.

When we got the music, we didn't realize that it wasn't an optimum key/pitch for Rebecca's performance until it was too late ... so we stepped the music up about 6 steps (Herman will have to explain what Key we changed it to/from). It created kind of a flange/tweaky effect with the music, but it was at least in an optimum key for Rebecca to really get into it with a key she felt good in.

I was thinking this wouldn't be any big deal, and that Herman could just do a keychange in his software & boom, no problem. Until he reminded me that he recorded many of the instruments live ... OOOPS!! Over the past day or two we've been PM'ing each other, I've listend to Rebecca perform in the original key via phone (she's on vacation right now with her family), etc. trying to figure out what to do.

However, after I posted an example of her performance with the tweaked music, Herman liked her pitch/performance so much, that he's decided he wants to re-record the music/instruments on his end. Wow, thanks Herman!! While it shows Herman's professionalism with wanting to have the best possible product, even if it means more work on his end, it's also a testament to how well Rebecca did/came across if it's inspiring him to want to go that extra mile. :)

Herman, you'll have to let me know how you think the recording quality itself was as well, considering the fact that we weren't in a professional studio, didn't have a large diaphram studio mic, etc.

Great fun! You should have known, the bathroom is the best booth for voice recording, crisp sound, natural reverb.

You're kidding, right? :undecided: Natural reverb if the ADR/voice is supposed to sound like it's from inside a bathroom. :cheesy:

Cool BTS Norm! We've been working with Herman on a song as well... I am looking forward to hearing the final product on this!

Steve, Patrick, thanks for the unique indie ideas for sound booths, lol. Guess I'll have to give 'em a shot if we didn't have any other options!

I've listened to this song a LOT now, with Rebecca's vocals ... and even with the music being tweaky right now from me having to alter the key manually on this end, it still is EXTREMELY impressive ... those two are just so talented at their crafts. I also can't wait until we have the final rendition completed.

Hey Norm. I've seen some of your framing from previous outings. Don't worry about the broken LCD screen.:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Seriously, that is really exciting and interesting to hear about your efforts. I've never heard Rebecca sing, but if it's even close to her acting skills she'll knock it out of the park. Why am I getting this weird feeling that this could be the one to watch this time out. Well done.

Really cool, i am looking forward to Rebecca's performance in your film. I may have to pick your brain about how to capture sound for a vocal performance. It seems like you have a great project developing. It inspires me. keep the updates a com'n.

Thanks Brian, and bosindy! It honestly is just SICK how amazing Rebecca sounds, thanks in no small part as well to Herman's mix & original music/performance of instruments to boot. I'm amazed at their talents, and wish I had even a pinch of what they have! Well, if I do have a talent, it's the ability to surround myself with those who are more talented than I am, lol.

Speaking of surrounding myself with talented folks, we've had a recent crew change ... AGAIN.

As of today, Shawn Sundby will not be the DP for BERLIN, and Ryan Walters, who has DP'd with me several times before, will be taking over the role. I'm excited for this, as Ryan knows the camera set up VERY well (it IS his, afterall, lol), he and I work well together, and we've both learned from past projects what works, what doesn't, and what to apply to this shoot.

Poor Jeremy ... as soon as I get an updated poster from him, I'll get it all offically updated on this end as well.

Patrick LaValley will be stepping into the 1st AC role, so I still need to line up my 1st AD in addition now to a 2nd AC.

Wow, Rebecca sings, she's thin, she's blonde, she's pretty, I dunno, I would have found someone else to play the lead...

Absolutely fine for you to post, Patrick, thanks! You're AMAZING for being able to pull all that together, especially since there's a chance that Steve Waters may not be available for a weekend, etc. I also was just reminded by Tung that he won't be available the 2nd weekend ... hopefully at least Steve will be for that one, but if not it will be more CU's that time anyway, as well as B-Roll stuff, etc.

BTW, I was asked to see if we'd have battery packs for any of the lights (i.e. in case we blew a breaker/fuse - I've got to see what they use to be prepared), and/or generators? Thoughts?

hmm- well without being too long winded- we have two small HMI lights that are battery powered, but these are small ENG type HMI's, they throw out about as much as a 100watt light. I have access to a small Honda generator, but it's only rated at 1000watts, which means we could only run about 750 watts effectively on it, or just rely on the Kino Flo's, which draw much less power. Home depot rents 5k generators for relatively cheap, maybe 50-60 bucks a day? Which could be a last-resort effort that we could probably pick up in a day-of type situation.

Hmmm...was this Hubers who asked? Because if Steve Waters is still your gaffer, then no need to worry, he knows how to handle power constraints.

Batteries for lights over 500w is a joke, so no, you don't have them, no one does, unless you coble together a ton of huge marine batteries and large inverters. But relax, Steve knows power distribution and is very conscious about such things, he can tap into plenty of power there to ensure you don't blow anything.

Wow, I am SO stinkin' tired! At PDX right now via Wi-Fi, waiting for my 6:30am flight to take off for my all-day trip to Miami. Hopefully this will be my last trip out there for at least 6+ months, if not the rest of the year. On a positive note, got to love the company expense stuff, as I have no problem buying a huge breakfast to sit down & catch up on stuff while I wait, lol. Been here since about 4:45am, and running on ... well, fumes ... less than 3 hours sleep.

Moving on ...

Patrick/Shawn, it wasn't Hubers that asked, but apparently someone who doesn't really know lights. Then again, they were apparently also asking someone (me) who didn't know much about lights, since I relayed the stupid question in the first place. Steve was unfortunately unable to make the tech scout trip, and I'll have to check with Tung if he got a good look at the outlets, etc. I'll have to contact Hubers directly to see if they've been upgraded to a breaker box, or if they're still on fuses ... if fuses, then we need to purchase some in advance, just in case! The place was established in 1887, so it's anyone's guess until we ask.

We've got some GREAT shots planned, and I'll TRY to storyboard some this week, though it'll have to be scratched out by hand, as I forgot to load up the software to the laptop last night. I'm incredibly excited about this film, and can't wait to begin sharing more on it, specifically Rebecca's recording mixed with Herman's wonderful music ... which combined is just SOOOO good.

I've shared my check list with Rebecca, so we'll see if she can help take anything off my hands with regards to to-do's ... otherwise, I'll be getting as much finalized with pre-production as I can via phone/e-mail while in Miami. I get back around midnight on Thursday night, home for the day on Friday to catch up & do some business, then flying back out to Las Vegas on Saturday morning until Tuesday. Busy ... but not sure I'd really want it any other way.

Yes, Norm, I am definitely planning on helping this week & next on the list! :) Have a great trip to Miami!

I am very curious to hear this song Rebecca sings :) We're in search of great female vocalists right now for something we're working on.
