Well we recorded Rebecca's vocal performance this past Tuesday night. I was a TAD nervous about the results (I didn't let this on to her, however, lol) as we were going to be recording her performance in my office. I'll try to get some BTS shots up in the next week or so ... after I get a new camera, since one of my kids just shattered the LCD screen on our current one.
Anyway, I bought a bunch of furniture moving pads, and nailed them all about my desk area in my office (even nailing/covering the ceiling) creating approximately a 6 foot squared "booth". I then took additional pads & covered every hard surface that was visible (desk, monitor, etc.), and even put one on the floor to cover the plastic mat that the chair rolls on ... she was pretty well contained in the best padded booth I could create on short notice.
Set up the AKG 480b/CK63 Hyper Cardiod combo with a pop-filter, and recorded two channels into the DVX at slightly different levels, incase she clipped out in the high ends. We had to pull it in at a reduced bit rate compared to Herman's 24bit WAV file of the music, since the DVX can only record at a maximum of 16bit, but I think it still sounds really good.
When we got the music, we didn't realize that it wasn't an optimum key/pitch for Rebecca's performance until it was too late ... so we stepped the music up about 6 steps (Herman will have to explain what Key we changed it to/from). It created kind of a flange/tweaky effect with the music, but it was at least in an optimum key for Rebecca to really get into it with a key she felt good in.
I was thinking this wouldn't be any big deal, and that Herman could just do a keychange in his software & boom, no problem. Until he reminded me that he recorded many of the instruments live ... OOOPS!! Over the past day or two we've been PM'ing each other, I've listend to Rebecca perform in the original key via phone (she's on vacation right now with her family), etc. trying to figure out what to do.
However, after I posted an example of her performance with the tweaked music, Herman liked her pitch/performance so much, that he's decided he wants to re-record the music/instruments on his end. Wow, thanks Herman!! While it shows Herman's professionalism with wanting to have the best possible product, even if it means more work on his end, it's also a testament to how well Rebecca did/came across if it's inspiring him to want to go that extra mile.
Herman, you'll have to let me know how you think the recording quality itself was as well, considering the fact that we weren't in a professional studio, didn't have a large diaphram studio mic, etc.
