Emotions, crazy requests, donation messages go HERE

andyjar: "Any chance of 2k 2.4:1" -- this is my hope too. I thought NURBS did a test for this at some point? If we could get approx 2k Cinemascope (2048 x 858) at a good bitrate that would be a unique feature for indies. And, since this is the crazy thread, in 4:2:2 please! Could there be anything better than this for just over a thousand including kit lens?

Tester13 hasn't just brought the GH1 back to life, it could be a genuine game changer with these future mods.

Honestly, I'd be satisfied with the old bitrate at 2k. It's actually less pixels then 1920x1080. Even if it has to be hardware upscaled, I'd rather have it done in-cam then have to do it in post. And I agree, you will never find a 2k 4:2:2 camera for anywhere near this cheap.

Very slow frame rates for timelapse work.

There's an option for "MJPEG Encoder 30fps -> Xfps" - if set to 1, appears to record, display shows one frame per second but all buttons locked out including power... I realise this is experimental at the moment.

I'd like it to make a Capuchino! - or at least a short black, I'm generally busy shooting weddings and don't get time to grab something to drink so this would be really handy.

along with that nonsensical request I've donated another $50 - I think that's the 3rd donation for me.

If you're thinking of posting ANYTHING and even if you're only reading this - MAKE A DONATION !!!!

it doesn't matter if it's only $5 - it all helps

this is incredible stuff and shows us the very best of the world wide web, let's make sure they have all the camera's cards & lenses they need.

Just donated my first 50 dollars. We should make it a habit to donate an amount we can afford once a month (each according to his means). Without a steady flow of donations Tester wont be able to focus on what he does best: sharing his talent with the rest of us and making us happy. Thanks to him I'm going to be able to afford making my next doc with a great camera. Thank you Tester!

I'll vote for this one too. Undercrank would be awesome. I love the fact that you can do 1/2" exposures in mjpg mode... WAIT! Now I want to up the resolution and bitrate in mjpeg and see if that will still work??

OMG...

720p30 AVCHD @ 17Mbps -- This could have a HUGE impact on video image quality. From what I've seen, the hacks so far have made a big difference in bitrate & filesize, but little difference in quality. Cutting the raw data stream in half (720p60 > 720p30) would make a vast difference in IQ if we can keep the compression parameters the same.
I don't think this will work the way you suggest. If you were talking about MJPG, your assertions would be correct, fewer frames = less to compress = more bits per frame. But with a long-GoP codec it doesn't work that way. You actually get about the same codec efficiency from 720/60p as you would from 720/30p, or maybe even more. Long-GoP encodes only the changes between frames. In 720/60p the frames are closer together in time, and therefore have less change between them, than 720/30p does. So if you just went to 720/30p, it might be equally hard, or even harder, on the codec than 720/60p is!

Now, that's theory; actual testing will reveal whether it's true or not. But I am certain that it won't make much if any difference, after shooting plenty of 720/24p and 720/60p AVCHD on other Panasonic cameras. On the HMC150 and HMC40, there's no big difference in compression artifacts or quality between 720/24p and 720/60p.

Hi,

2 Questions or requests here:

1st:
I have observed, that when I use the MPEG mode, the change of aperture is smooth, whit when you use the AVCHD mode, it goes step nay step , not smooth.

Is there anything one can do about it via frimware?

2nd:
Also, will 4:2:2 be possible in AVCHD sometimes in the future?

I am mainly shooting sport and fast moving objects, so the 720/50p mode in AVCHD is important to me

Or of course a stable 50p MJPEG mode would be fine too.
But this does not work up to now as far as I understand.

Maybe this could be useful - for everyone:

Ability to reconfigure each video quality preset (FHD, SH, H, L) to discretionary resolution, framerate and bitrate.

In my experience, I'd use to make myself a new set of presets more along the lines of
- "Motion" (1080p, 24p, high bitrate, I/P/B frame-ratio optimized for heavy motion, handheld shots, panning and zooming)
- "Detail" (1080p, 24p, high bitrate, I/P/B frame-ratio optimized for heavy detail, use with tripod or stabilizer)
- "Balanced" (1080p, 24p, high bitrate)
- "Low" (720p, 24p, low bitrate for better autofocus performance or low memory usage).
- "Fast" (720p, 50p, high bitrate, for slow-motion in post)

Obviously these would be more relevant to AVCHD than MJPEG, although the low-bitrate or fast framerate are still relevant.

I think running both the EVF and LCD is too taxing on the CPU, as thet are different devices in both technology and number of pixels.

Let's hope Tester13 can enable the A/V monitoring so it will be possible to connect a small LCD monitor and headphones.

I was worried it might be a CPU thing - though I was hoping otherwise since older less powerful camcorders (like the Canon HV-20) had simultaneous EVF & LCD.

A/V monitoring would most useful for people. Though, I still have my fingers crossed to see if Tester13 can do some magic with simultaneous EVF & LCD :)

This might be a "crazy" request, but would it be possible to move messages from the main thread to this one instead of deleting them? Organization is necessary to keep it under control, but deleting stuff is a worriesome practice as it may stiffle discussion.

A request and a big Thanks!

A request and a big Thanks!

I've been playing around with these new settings. What fun! After things settle down a bit it might be nice to be able to patch menu options in the camera so that useless settings don't show up any more.

It seems to me that one of the tradeoffs when using these patches is that some modes of operation don't work anymore. For example, when setting the best patches for AVCHD the other modes for AVCHD don't really work any longer. So, for fat fingered people like me it would be nice if those options don't appear on the menu. Better yet - it would be great if the table space could be expanded so that different patches could be applied to different modes of operation - but I realize that might be asking for a bit much.

I'm gravitating toward the idea of having two modes of operation - the best 1080p AVCHD mode, and the best 720 MJPEG patch that eventually arises. Between those two I'd have everything I need and it would be nice to not be able to select other modes - that probably won't work properly any longer - by accident.

One question: Does the "C" (nee "D") AVCHD setting fail on class 10 cards as well?

Great work, by the way. You can count on periodic donations from me. You've given me a new camera. Thanks!

Chris

Here's one that goes under the crazy request category.

Audio ONLY recording.

Actually I'm kinda new to the GH1 so it may already do this (like some other cameras offer) but I didn't see it yet. Sometimes, occasionally, it's useful to record the ambient sounds in an environment without the need for any video and visa-versa. Often the location required to capture the best sound for the event is not the same as that required for the best footage. If it can't already, it would be nice to be able to record audio only on our GH1's.

Try putting the lens cap on, which I believe lowers the video bit rate so that extended audio recording would be possible. Or buy a proper recorder, of course, which would give radically better results.

request

request

I know this request would more be a long term thing, but it would be cool if GH1 could be internally programmed to act as intervalometer allowing us to take time lapse without the need for external remote.

And an even "crazier" idea would be if those jpegs could then be internally compiled into a mjpeg video.

Another similar request would be for taking bracketed photos for HDR photography, the camera already has a mode that does this, but in my experience it is a bit limited, maybe im just using the mode incorrectly.

thanks for everything to all the testers working on this

Would it be possible to increase the dynamic range on the GH1? Maybe by making a -3 contrast setting or something.

Nice, Adam Baldwin. Couldn't tell from the small size.

Another question: The VGA 4:3 mode, it's of course locked to a smaller size and framerate. Being that it's only VGA, do you know what portion of the sensor it's using? Is it the actual full height of the sensor or is it a cropped mode? Is it possible to increase the recording size for a 4:3 image and the bitrate? For those of us who would shoot Anamorphic.

My camera isn't with me so I really can't test, and I think a more technical view into it would be more beneficial than unscientific glances.

Rolling shutter

Rolling shutter

Hi tester13,

Do you think that the rolling shutter could be remedied by setting higher sensor refresh rate for FHD mode? Like 50fps instead of 25fps. (720/60 has much less RS than 1080/25)

I am sorry to repeat my question, I will not ask this again, I promise. But I am confident that it is an important one, and so far I haven't received any real answer to it other than "yes RS is bad, use whatever software, go to another thread, etc." These are not answers to the question. I am aware of that RS is bad, I know that there are some software solutions (tried them, they are not perfect by any means), so if there is a chance that we could solve it in the camera, that would be exceptional!

I guess you, tester13, are the only one who can give a real answer here. Could you please share your thoughts on this, if you have the time?

Thank you very much.

One of my main issue with the micro 4/3 system (still and video) was allways dynamic range. It would be incredible if dynamic range increase could be achieved vie firmware but I'm almost sure it's sensor related. I have an E-P1 and even the raw files don't allow for much of a dynamic range increase...maybe 1.5 stops with weird colors.
