EXACTLY!!!!!!! Bless you for saying it! I'm so tired of the silly conspiracy theories and "crippling" nonsense. It's so much easier to just point out that these products are designed to meet a certain price tag. For some reason people have no problem accepting that a $300 nettop computer won't be as fast as a $3,000 octo-core desktop tower, but the same logic applied to cameras has them screaming about "purposeful crippling for protecting the high end"...

As far as the chip goes, I believe that's exactly correct. It cannot deliver faster than 1080/25p, or 720/60p. If you tried to get 1080/60p out of it, the best you could get would be an upscaled 720p, because the chip itself simply isn't designed to be read that fast.

The notion of "crippling" is not nonsense and it is not necessarily a "conspiracy theory" either. Manufacturers have been doing stuff like this for years. Observing that fact doesnt mean that you subscribe to conspiracy theories. It is merely market positioning. And if you do not think manufactures carefully consider feature sets that they offer as a means of maximizing profit, I think you are being naive. Sometimes of these marketing decisions cause features that are easily possible to deliver in hardware to be simply "turned off" or disabled. All of these decisions are not necessarily made in advance of engineering decisions. CPU history is full of this kind of thing - and hackers who exploit it.

Clearly Panasonic could have put 1080P @30 fps if they wanted. Clearly they could have has 24p without putting it in a 60i wrapper. Clearly they could have delivered higher data rates. There is probably more they could have done in firmware given the hardware in this camera.

How about crop mode being used to deliver video streams? Such a mode would not only allow c-mount lenses to be used full frame, but the sensor aliasing would be probably be more optimal as well. But think about that for a minute. Do they really want the GH1 to have excellent antialiasing? Why would they? What they have is "good enough" anti-aliasing for the intended market and better than many of the DSLR "competitors". No need to deliver something better - even if the hardware can do it. Besides, if they add the feature they have to support it - and that would be a semi-pro feature in a consumer camera. Leaving it out is a decent marketing decision. Maybe it becomes a new feature that can be added on the next camera.

It is not unreasonable at all to believe that they did not include these things simply because it was not necessary in order to sell a lot of cameras and because it leaves more room and motivation for customers to purchase a GH2.

Panasonic has announced a $6500 m43s camera specifically made for video. This is surely not a new idea. They probably had notions of doing this when they were settling on the GH1 feature set. Panasonic would be foolish if they did not consider the ramifications of loading up a G type camera with so many strong video options that it competes with their $6500 camera. Recognizing that is not seeing a conspiracy. It is simply recognizing that Panasonic caters to many markets and has to consider all of them when they put a product out.

BTW, my long time idea is that camera makers should make a camera body that can be outfitted with different "grips." No grip and you have a GH1 type camera. Add a video grip, and the camera gains some features. Perhaps better encoding via more powerful processing chips in the grip. Perhaps extra connections. Add a "pro" video grip and get dual card recording, even more connections and more features like fly-by-wire follow focus controls, live HD out and other such things. Of course Panasonic is not taking this route. And odds are that there are some good reasons for that. Reasons that I will probably never know.

BTW, Panasonic simply will not provide AF for certain Olympus lenses - even though Olympus does. Why would that be? Clearly it is technologically possible. And how come my 14-50mm Leica that came with my DMC-L1 will not AF on the GH1, but the camera happily and quicky sets the lens to infinity focus when I power down? And how come the 14-140mm HD lens steps the iris in discrete steps in a very non-video manner and does so more than the non-video 14-50 Leica? No conspiracy. It just was not necesary given the target market.

None of this is conspiracy. None of it is nefarious. It is merely the logical result of competing in a complex and constantly evolving set of interrelated markets. If Panasonic fails to make good profits on the GH1, then maybe there is no GH2. So those of us who buy cameras should not be bothered by any of this. We simply need to deal with it and be aware of it when making buying decisions - and give money to folks like tester13 who help to extend the usefulness of the stuff we have purchased.

Maybe this hack means I will not buy a GH2 when it comes out. But if so, Panasonic has not necessarily lost out. I may pick up a G2 and a nice m43 wide angle lens instead. Time will tell. As it is I am simply glad that some of the hardware capabilities of my GH1 are being "unlocked." Thanks guys.

BTW, while I cannot offer help on the software side of things, I can do some testing. I have Imatest and can make some provide some good and objective feedback on resolution and so forth. I am particularly interested now since it seems like we can now avoid making a gazzillion increments to the firmware and can return to a "pure" unaltered original. Very cool

I have a firmware feature request. It would be great to be able to use focus assist while recording with manual lenses. I've had instances on many occasions where I needed to refocus in the middle of a shot and had to cut, taking the actor out of their groove. If we get external monitor while recording it isn't such a big deal, but still would be a great feature to have.

expand fn-button shortcut options

ok ok here is my request: expand the available shortcut options for the fn-button.

i really want to quickly select the P, A, S, or M for the video priority mode.

Theres no conspiracy theory. Look at Canon's digic ASIC. They put that thing in almost every camera and it saves them money by having a single chip to manage, design and manufacture. Now do all digic IV cameras have the same "soft" features? Nope. Can these "soft" features be exposed through firmware hacks? Yep. Again, I wouldn't consider these tactics to be secret or conspiracies but I wouldn't say they don't exist either because they make sense from a business point of view. But that doesn't make it any more consumer friendly.

My turn to say, "Exactly!" And "thank you."

It is just good business and we should understand that we aren't just buying hardware, but are buying software and a certain targeted level of support.

Hopefully I'm posting this "emotions" post in the right forum, less I get flogged for posting in the wrong place, among the now DIZZYING array of GH1 hack threads. lol

I use my GH1 for weddings, as my full time job, to pay my rent and put beans in the pot, so I've been reluctant to start screwing around with the firmware on my money-maker.

But now that I know I can revert back to factory firmware settings, and DO have the ability to play back footage in camera, and have a few days off to play with it, I hacked my GH1 today.

1. I changed my bitrates to the "B" settings with the latest PTool, i.e. 2x the factory bit rate, and changed it to native 24p. GOP 15.

2. It plays back in camera just fine.

3. It plays back on my DMP-BD30 Blu-Ray player, via the SDHC card slot, just fine! That's awesome for when I'm using my camera for home videos and want to just check them out at the end of the day on the big screen!

4. The remaining recording time counter didn't change on my GH1. It still shows 4 hours 9 minutes for a 32gb card. Not a big deal...even on a paying wedding gig I rarely shoot over two hours.

5. I'm using Sandisk 32gb Class 4 Ultra cards, and haven't been able to get a write error.

This is all really cool...kudos to Tester13 and everyone working on this! I'll probably revert back to the factory settings before my next wedding, since I don't really have a big problem with mud (except from the photographers' flashes), and longer recording time trumps mud on a cheap-arsed wedding video. And native 24p isn't that important since I don't attempt to edit AVCHD and use Neoscene to convert anyways.

But for "film-making", this firmware hack is super cool! Nice work!!

Wow... Great job on this!

Would it be possible to modify the firmware to allow a still to be taken while fiilming?

This would be valuable even if you had to be in a camera mode, using the dedicated video button to start the video... (depressing shutter in this mode now only performs a refocus...)

Once again - Great Job!

Here's a crazy thought...what about 48p/1080p? That would be the best of both worlds since 24 goes into 48 evenly (you can have smooth slow motion and normal speed all from one framerate). This would be James Cameron's choice. :)

Except you'd lose 180 shutter for one speed and 48fps isn't that slow. Once you start slowing the framerate down, it doesn't matter if the original framerate is an integer multiple of the destination.

REQUEST:

It would be great if the guidelines could show 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 aspect ratio guidelines instead of the grid it currently does. This would allow of 16:9 shooting, but still let us more easily frame and prepare for eventual 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 cropping or masking.

Someone may have suggested this already, but live HDMI monitoring at all times (recording, while paused, etc.) would probably be a good next step.

thanks to testers13

thanks to testers13

Hi:) I'm newby in this forum.
first, thank you Vitaly and testers for this cool work.
and I just have done my first donation. #this is also my first Paypal experience.
I'm goint to try ptool and report as far as I can.

Ok time for my crazy idea, not video, but picture related

Since the gh1 is an oversized 4/3 sensor, that has different crop modes for picture 4/3/16/9,3/2,etc.. could you make a mode to use the full size of the sensor? call it vignetting mode or something, since it might vignette a little

by the way i would also appreciate a SD mode if we could get 120fps for slow mo purposes

Can anyone sum up what is happening right with the research and development? I noticed the firmware updates have stopped at 3.36 and a 3.37 was released for advanced testers. Are most testers just fine tuning an already good codec? Is more money really needed at this point?

I also noticed Car3o was asked to post the donation amount, but I haven't seen it anywhere, I have also asked. What's the deal?

I don't know if this has ever been mentioned/requested but.......(I haven't seen it)

I would like to see the GH1 be able to shoot a 1080 30p (29.97) avchd.

I would like to be able to use this cam as an "A" cam for some of the studio broadcast TV I do. I will be buying this cam shortly to use with the Canons cams but the canon have the 12 minute record problem.

Audio Metering

Audio Metering

Thank you for the amazing work both on the hack and on all the info here at DVXuser. My request is to get a audio metering display option. When I am tapped into the mini-mini plug it would be nice to know what my level looks like. Also a video out signal while recording would make this the perfect camera...

Thanks again.
