EIGHTEEN SECONDS by Jack, Zac and Mac

beautiful beautiful pictures. and i agree with barry (i think it was?) who noted the simplicity of the performances. wonderfully simple and real-- and i think the camera/cutting accompanies it quite well too, a couple of sweet little jump cuts to keep us.

wonderful work. i want more!

thanks guys

Montage imagery can't have mis en scene? I think, or I know if you have a series of scenes linked together that all have strong mis en scene; it can have a complex & woven impact on the audience.

"mise en scène means literally "putting into the scene" or "setting in scene." When applied to the cinema, then, mise en scène refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement "

There's no indication of time limit per scene.

I'll be more than happy to engage in this discussion in another thread if you start one; but I will not turn the topic of this thread away from Mac's film !

I'm trying to watch all the entries and i keep coming back to this one and watching it agian and agian. Fantastic job.

I was wondering, this whole project seems to be shot handheld. what sort of shouldermount did you use if any.

We had no permits, no crew, no nothing. So we could not afford to use the tripod. Hihihihi.

This is our expensive lighting set.

The tripod we never used...

We shot this in our "spare" time while doing two other projects.
The idea was to go for intimacy, hence lots of handheld and just flipping that gain switch on when needed. If it was grainy - fine. That is just as valid an aesthetic choice as glass smooth so long as it is a choice and helps tell the story in some way.
In other words grain, and noise were not something we were going to be afraid of. They would be part of the aesthetic and keep it from having an over lit Sears Studio portrait look.

When people bump film up a couple of stops in developing it, it makes grain. This is always seen as an aesthetic choice not a defect of the camera.

It was more of a dogma95 approach visually, as we broke almost all of their other rules.

the scenes of Amy in her apartment and in bed and me in the bed were lit using 250 lowell pro and/or a 750 lowel tota.

well three brilliant dudes, shoot in their spare time... With a 35 dapter and a DP thats not an idiot, Throw in a Beautufl masturbating Man, and chick, and you have Gold man. :)

Not bad for "thrown" together ithink.

...Beautiful Masturbating Man...
Lol...Jack, I think that means it's time to replace your old custom title, Mr. Excitable.

I don't really have anything to say about this short except that you guys are filmmaking gods and I want to stalk you on your next 50 projects to see how you do it.

Amazing stuff. Congrats to you all.

PS Is this non-compete? It's probably been stated, but I didn't see it anywhere.

EDIT: I asked about whether this was competing just cuz I never heard an Eric(a) reference and I didn't think you guys would exclude that if you were planning to compete. Maybe I missed it.

Absolutely stunning in every aspect of filmmaking. Loved it.

But I didn't like the ending. I was confused as to why she "fainted"? Or did she die of a heart attack?

Beautifully shot and edited. But I missed that bittersweet ending Simile had...

EDIT: I meant Similo.

I've still got several to screen but I'm hard-pressed to see how this won't be at the top of my list. Minor critique: it bothered me that Jack's character retained his glasses in place after that hit. Might be my background, but you wouldn't see that in the real world. Overcranked briefcase slide was awesome. Gawd, I loved the cinematic feel of those street scenes. That light in the canyons of New York is to die for. As a private aside, I couldn't help but remember an evening on the rekindled set when Jason and Amy were discussing with me the subject of on stage masturbation. I was mesmerized and totally taken by Jason's account of a role he had and understood completely the difference between art and pandering. Your scenes were so focused and part of the story that I admire greatly the subtlety and importance of writing this into the script. Amy is a goddess and I am certain that she will be appearing before us often in many roles. Jack, you amaze me beyond measure. I tip my hat to your devotion to your craft. That you were born with talent cannot be denied, but it is much more impressive to me to recognize how much of what you have is the result of hard work, patience and good decision-making.

I was exepcting something good and you delivered. Very, very good film. My best so far. With very little dialogue, all imagery.

I enjoyed the cutting back n' forth between the two characters and it kept it interesting.

This just looked like 16mm film. And to think you got a lot of these shots guerilla style is amazing. I loved how you made the city a character.

Great, subtle, acting from the two leads. And the ending... WOW... Awesome.

I would've like to see a small pool of blood coming from JDS's head but I understand you had no permits and whatnot, so you were probably trying to get the shots quick...but, none the less... I loved this film.

Excellent job!

Hey guys,
Congratulations on an awesome film, beautiful love the colors. One geek question how did the film hold up at 720p was the grain of the adapter noticeable, I know Macgregor has had problems with it before. I am trying to decide between the go35 and the sgpro for use with an HVX. Anyway loved the sound, colors, framing, performances which were quite edgy in parts. Beautiful all round hats off to Jack for stepping in front of the cam.

That was a very interesting story line. Absolutely original and very well done. Congrats to all of you. I was engaged the entire time.
