Edius - My new NLE! (maybe...)

i too switched over from Premiere to Edius and after the initial learning curve i've been very happy with it.

there were some things i could do much more quickly and precisely in Premiere that i just can't do in Edius, like keyframing fx and doing some motion graphics animation right in the NLE. i loved Premiere's interface and the ability to manipulate keyframes easily right in the preview window, but just couldn't suffer the constant crashes and freezes that have plagued Premiere for years.

every week i learn something new and amazing with Edius that makes me appreciate it more and more. for multicam editing and super simple chroma keying and white balance you just can't beat it.

Hi averan,
You said something about keyframes.
Do you feel that it's less precise in Edius? in what manner?
What kind of things can Premiere do regarding keyframes that edius can't?

As for the animation, I've never done animation inside premiere, always gone directly to AE, so I won't feel the difference, but the keyframes thing concern me.

its waaaaay easier to precisely manipulate the keyframes in Premiere.

in Edius, like FCP, you have this smaller popup fx timeline window within which to adjust your keyframes. even after stretching open a parameter's layer tall enough to get at the keyframe control node, it still isn't very easy to adjust the spline or node.

whereas, in Premiere, you don't have to dig down into a separate window, or stretch and expand the space just to be able to edit a keyframe....you can do it all in the large space of the playback window and you can very easily finesse the curves and splines of keyframed fx.

when i used Premiere, my workflow used to include lots of basic motion graphics. i used to easily and quickly animate titles, but now that i'm in Edius, i have had to resort to using presets or doing all my animation inside After Effects.

it was so easy in Premiere, that i used to frequently create custom transitions too. even things as simple as a lens flare to white-out to fade into the next shot are now much more complex and tedious in Edius.

its very complicated to combine fx in Edius and difficult to create your own custom stuff. it can be done, but not anywhere near as easily or quickly.

if Edius would take a hint from Premiere and make the controls easier to use with a more visual interface then they would totally dominate the NLE market!

but i was willing to sacrifice such workflow ease and fx power for the stability, overall editing speed and reliability of Edius.
or better put, i just couldn't put up with Premiere crashing all the time!

Thanks for that, I will look more into the whole keyframe thing, although at first try it looked OK.
Titles seem pretty cool in Edius using either Inscriber or Quicktitler.
The first thing that got me in the titles was Right-To-Left support, finally!
Also inscriber seems to have some cool animation features although not as stable as the entire Edius Package.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm actually the opposite... I started out on Premiere, and changed to Edius when it was first released due to stability in Premiere.. I stayed with Edius until Premiere released CS4.1 with better AVCHD support and Encore... Mainly Encore. I love the integration between Premiere and AfterEffects, Encore, Audition, Photoshop... Very slick!

I may switch back to Edius when they release 6.0 with 64bit support.... dunno tho... CS5 will be here too!

I totally agree that some of the know controls for some of the transitions are a pain and sliders would be much easier. However if you (V5.0 and higher) really start playing with the GPU effects, you will be surprised at what you can do. If you work in the pop up boxes, some of the keyframes can be a little difficult. But (and I love this) you can move the cursor on the timeline (while the popup box is open) and this in turn moves the cursor in the popup. To me this is great because I can actually get to the exact point on the timeline itself where I want the keyframe.

I did like the way that Premiere allowed you to animate the title while still in the title box) but, AFA animating motion graphics and/or titles, you can do basic stuff very easily using the Layout tool and the more complicated stuff by using 3DPIP. You must place your title in a video track (not the title track) to do this for titles.

The area that Edius falls a bit short is garbage or track mattes and some of the alpha support could be easier.

I use Photoshop and AE with Edius and no doubt the integration with Premiere is nice and faster, but that is more than made up by the time saved in editing in Edius.

Really Pat, for me it's Encore integration. Most of my stuff is 2 cam, simple cuts or basic transitions with grading on the clips. Being able to simply edit, then dynamic link to After Effects for the titles, then dynamic link back to Encore and make an awesome fully animated motion menu for Blu-Ray is sweet. No rendering until I build the DVD in Encore.
If Edius 6 has a better DVD authoring app built in I'll be back 100%... I can still do titles in AfterFX, so that part is no big deal.
Oh, editing the audio in Audition is very nice too.

Dynamic Link is amazing, no doubt about it. but on my system it was unusable.
It requires so much memory and cpu power that I stopped using it and switched back to the simple old rendering method, Dynamic link of AE materials is much slower than inside AE itself.
Encore is great, but there are other authoring tools out there.

I never used audition, for audio I use Cubase or Reaper (another amazing software) and some External VSTs.

Of course Edius alone is not enough, you must have AE/Combustion for titles, animations and Special Effects.

Is anyone here able to use 3D PIP in realtime on a 1920x1080 timeline?
What are your computer specs?

Thanks!
And on a normal system? :undecided

I've just upgraded my CPU to a Q6700.

1. First of all transcoding to Canopus HQ takes about x0.6 of original clip's playback time (transcoding a single clip, doing it on multiple clips should give better results).
2. 3D pip is Realtime (on a single source).
3. It doesn't seem to improve much on After effects bridge or Vitascene, it seems as if edius is not utilizing the full power of my CPU, giving me 25% CPU usage while dropping frames.
4. 720p AVCHD is playbacked in RT.
5. 1080p AVCHD still not RT.
6. Same results in Premiere 4.2, AVCHD materials are uneditable (unless you're willing to render every tiny transition and effect).

Overall I'm very pleased with Edius, and I'm working with it right now for a big project I'm filming.

I wish it had an option for Draft preview (like AE- half resolution, third, etc.), I don't see any reason not to provide it.
And I wish it could utilize my CPU more efficiently, I think a lot more can be done with it.

So, if you're a premiere fan and you're sick with slow rendering, lousy preview quality, software crashing, and you can't use dynamic link since you don't have a Super-Computer, then give Edius a try, you'll be amazed...

Does Magic Bullet Looks work with the AE Bridge now? Last I heard, it would stop working after you exported and returned to the project.

I just signed up on dvxuser. I work at Grass Valley on the product marketing team for EDIUS. Quickly to answer some of the questions on this forum.

Officially, EDIUS does not support Windows 7, but as some people have found EDIUS 5.xx runs just fine on Windows 7. That is not surprising since if an app supports XP and Vista it typically will work on Windows 7. The official announcment that EDIUS supports Windows 7 is expected about mid 2010.

The new EDIUS Neo 2 Booster (what many are calling EDIUS Neo 2.5) does work on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 (officially). It has the new AVCHD codec, and yes we are looking at rolling that into EDIUS in the future. Until then, the AVCHD to AVI app that some were referring to might be the best short term solution.

10-bit support on EDIUS is also something that is receiving serious attention. I can't say more about that just yet.

As some have found, Magic Bullet works pretty well on our AE bridge (beta version). Many other AE plugins work as well. I have been watching activity on our own EDIUS forum about user experience on the AE bridge. I'll watch here as well. The purpose of the free beta bridge is to get this kind of feedback so the bridge will be solid when officially released.

Mark, I have an older (unofficial?) version of the AE Bridge (AfterEffectsFilterBridge-510-20090320-build1016) that works with Magic Bullet Looks without having to use the "workaround" outlined on the GV forums. I've even been able to use it with Neo 2 Booster by manually installing the bridge plugin file into the proper Neo folder. Any idea why this one seems to work so much better than the newer versions?
