Editing

If the quality is soo much higher than HD, as it seems to be in the picture comparison on the website. What is editing going to be like? Are we going to need a huge monster of a computer to be able to even view it and edit the footage?

Also, how cost effective is this going to be? Not only will you have to buy/rent the camera, you will need the crazy machine to edit it, plus output it to something that can be viewed (i.e. film or hd if theaters move to HD projectors)

If it doesn't come out cheaper than film or HD, I don't see why people would turn to this new technology. Maybe waaaaay in the future it will be cost effective. I love the idea, it seems like if there will be some way to make this cheaper, it will be huge. But in the near future, I dont see it making a huge explosion in the industry. Just my opinion.

Well, we don't have any details yet on the 'RED Codec' which they are working on apparently... so in terms of what's needed, your guess is as good as mine.
But, rest assured you won't be editing 2540P on an old laptop anytime soon.

That said, just because the camera can shoot 2540P doesn't mean you have to.
You will also have the option of shooting 1080P, 720P, or 480P - so you can shoot within your means, so to speak (but still have all the benefits of an oversampled image and a S35mm sized sensor).

Also, keep in mind that this camera is being developed now - with an eye for the future.
By the time it is released it's possible that 2K displays and editing solutions will be a bit more attainable. But even if they aren't - you'll have the option as soon as they get there.

considering you need a dual 2.0ghz mac with 2 gigs of ram to edit 1080 lines of res on a mac, or 3.0ghz PC you will probably need a minimum of a quad 2.5ghz G5 with 4gigs of ram for a mac system and dual 3.0 system for pc.

You may be right - but keep in mind that the target for RED is the end of 2006, and I think that realistically we won't see a RED camera until 2007 (I'm just guessing here).

So think about that.... a year ago you would have told me, "1080P! You need at least a 2GHZ mac with 2Gigs of ram!"

Whereas today the reaction is more - "1080P? Yeah, you can cut that with a 2Ghz Mac with 2gigs of ram."

Computers are cheaper every single day.
A year from now a quad 2.5ghz won't be nearly as expensive as it is right now.

Remember, this camera does not exist yet.
We're talking about a year down the road.

I don't think anybody (not even the pros) will edit 4k footage directly, but a 720p or even SD proxy. I don't know though which NLE support this.

dont forget about hte new MAc that came out, the quad. its supposed to be ınsane. it might be able to handle ıt.
