Editing/Exporting

I just finished my first shoot (nothing too exciting) and am totally unprepared for the editing process. I have a PC with Adobe Premiere Pro. In all of your opinions, what is the best editing software for a PC? Vegas perhaps? Not that I really need to say it but I really want to try out CCing too.

I have used Premiere Pro 2.0, Vegas 7 and Avid Xpress on my PC and I liked Avid the least. This is mostly because I didn't give it a chance, but it seemed too different compared to other programs so I just gave up and switched to Premiere. Premiere worked perfect for me. I then switched to Vegas just to give it a go and haven't went back to Premiere since.

I'm a lot like Steven, I've used Premiere but never really liked it and was often frustrated. We use Avid at school but I'm still learning a lot about how to use it, its quite a challenging program especially if you're inexperienced. To me, the simple answer is Vegas. It's a powerful system that can do basically what all the big boys do but much more easily (especially if you're working with 24p). The problem with many NLE's is that they can take a lot of effort to peform some very mundane tasks. My advice is to go with Vegas, it's a lot cheaper than many of the others and excels in many places that the others lack.

Avid has more power then FPC. It is a much harder program to come to grasps with, I have had the PLE version on my comp for six months and still cant figure out how to do anything. Never used Vegas, it seems pretty good though from what I hear about it. I am in love with my CS3 Master Collection, mostly cause I was lucky enough to get it for free for my birthday (I have rich relatives, I take advantage of it). Premiere CS3 OWNS Pro2 IMO, but some disagree.

Ok, well, for better or worse I edited on Premiere pro and it turned out fairly decently. My trouble now is exporting. How can I export it and get the same quality it is in premiere in avi?

im pretty sure you can go to file > export > movie

then click settings and change the file type to Microsoft dv avi and it will export it as a pretty small file for what it is and compress it like a camera would. I am assuming that "Microsoft dv avi" is the same as NTSC DVDVCpro compression. If it is, you can burn it to a dvd and it would look fine on a tv

Thanks, I am trying that out now. Im not so much looking for dvds to be made (though thats good to know) im looking at Youtube uploads. Anything special I gotta do to compress this baby down?

Oh youtube is a different story. I always just export as .mov with h.264 compression at like 350kbs bit rate then upload that. I am sure there are better ways to go about this though. search for it on the forum cause i know someone had a thread about how to export as a flash video file which ended up looking pretty good on youtube
