Ease my mind regarading Sony, Please

Hehe.

Anyway, it's funny that anyone is even concerned with this... Do these people own/use a DVX100? Do they not realize that the "24P" on their DVX is 23.97 as well? 24PA is 2:3:3:2 -> 2+3+3+2 = 10 fields into 4 frames... 60i or 59.97 / 10 * 4 is roughtly 23.97. I'm too lazy to actually load up the calculator.

Nobody cares. The pros certainly don't care because they know it's a non-issue.

There's nothing magical about 24P, except for insecure amateur wannabees.

The real thing about 24p vs 24 FPS is that in NTSC/60Hz version HVX200 is converting 1080i/24 over 60i and 720p/24 over 60p. Using 2:3 pull-down method is not possible to get mathematically correct or exact 24 fps and you get 23,976p. Than our beloved camera vendor advertising to the "ordinary" customer that only with that cam you get film style speed in 24p. And film style speed is NOT 24p (aka 23.976fps) it is 24.00fps only. The camcorder with 60i/p/1080/720/24p is the product they sell in US/Japan that is the biggest market for an y camcorder manufactor. In the rest of the world is PAL system or 50Hz electric current and all the products MUST run at 50Hz. Than with camcorders you have got 50i, 50p and 25p option. And than if you want to get 24fps you must slow down 50i/p/25p about 4% to get 24fps. It should be done with software in camera or in a computer or using a hardware converter. As I said before NO camera vendor to offer a low cost HD with clear/pure/true 24 fps recording today. You know why? They keep it for high end HD. The story about 24p like true 24fps is just for a poor consumer. Don't forget that they all want to sell. So take it or leave it.

I'll be "taking it", and "it" should be in my hands in a few weeks. Signing off of this petty argument... See ya!!

Congratulation! Than you are a "lucky" one.

Awwww, come on! We're only at 26 posts on this thread (not incl. this one). Surely we could beat this issue to about 200 or so.

Well, considering the name of this forum is dvxuser.com, I believe that a lot of us "poor consumers" have already "taken it". Brushing that aside, instead of spending your time trying to convice us NOT to buy these "23.976" cameras, why don't you design and prototype a low cost HD camera which can record a true 24 frames per second? If what you say is true, then you could probably sell a lot of cameras and make a nice profit for yourself.

Well. The original posting I put up had nothing to do with 24p vs. 24fps. It's been really fun watching yet another thread get hijacked by one user who can't get over his soapbox issue.

A sincere thanks for those who actually tried to answer my question.

Well, if you believe this article about the Star Wars TV series, Lucas will "shoot the series on a Sony digital camera system that anyone can buy at an electronics store." Maybe Lucase was talking out of his ass, or maybe he was misquoted, or maybe the "digital camera system" is a still camera modified to run at 24p (very unlikely). Or maybe he is aware of an as-yet unannounced Sony HD/HDV camera that would compete feature-wise with the HVX but cost even less (it would have to for it to be available at a consumer electronics store). But I don't believe that Lucas would allow the principal photography of a million-dollars-per-episode series to hinge on the images produced by an FX1 or HC1, the only Sony HDV camcorders routinely available (at least at Best Buy). Considering the extreme amount of compositing in Star Wars III, the HDV's high compression ratios and 4:2:0 sampling might pose technical problems.

I don't like Sony. They're arrogant. They give big discount to belgian stations and large facility firms so that the rest just has to follow. And they only give lower end users some sweetness after someone forces them. Look at the switches on a Z1. Whitebalance switch, gain switch, a dail for the settings, dails for the audio, the ability to tweak some gamma and color,...
They never put that in a handycam formfactor before. And if panny and canon hadn't shown them the way we would probably still be waiting.
No, as long as I can I'm keeping my money away from Sony. Just for their arrogance.

Just because there is 24P, does that mean it's the holy grail to everyone?

Yes.

I love the newsflashes (Details at Eleven!) And No; no one cares about the difference.

What exactly is your point SJUSER?

And are you serious that you think the difference is "visible in theater projection"? If anyone could tell the difference I would think they'd be like Rainman counting frames mumbling "Not filmed in 24fps. Definately not 24fps. Must be 23.976. Definately must be 23.976. Filmed on video. Video like Wapner. Video like Judge Wapner."

Okay, this is why I love it here at DVXuser.

That one made my day.
