Gary Oldman's a great bad guy. I like when serious actor's play bad guys. Here's a few roles i like: Denzel in Training Day, Phillip Seymore Hoffman in Mission Impossible 3, Robin Williams in One Hour Photo/Insomnia, Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs Of New York/There Will Be Blood.
Guys, keep in mind that the strength of a story is usually directly relatable to the strength of your villain. There have been lots of films about villains as the protagonist, such as "Fallen" or "Despicable Me" or "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog". The rules haven't come out yet, so I don't know if the requirement will be that the villain must be your protagonist, but while we're spitballin' -- I'm not concerned about whether or not the villain is your protagonist, only that the villain is a strong character. He shouldn't be some two-dimensional "evil" guy, he should be as fully fleshed out as the protagonist is. Put it this way -- you should be able to tell your story from either character's perspective. Your villain should be just as motivated, just as challenged, and just as devoted to his/her goal, as your hero is to his or hers. Look at Silence of the Lambs -- there were two villains in there, and one of them was a serial killer, but it wasn't just some nameless/faceless scary guy, they actually took the time to let you understand what Buffalo Bill's motivation was, and follow his progress towards his goal.
Flesh out your villain. Make him (or her) real. Make them believable. Make us understand why they want what they want, and show them trying to achieve it. Have fun with it -- they could be a comic villain, or a dastardly villain, or a serious villain... there's so many ways to go with this. You might even want to explore making them an unwitting villain (like Arthur Dent was for Agrajax). They could be a comic-book supervillain, an evil mastermind, or a struggling entrepreneur who's just trying to get his cocain business off the ground.
There's a lot of fertile ground here, let your imagination run with it, then go make a great film and blow us away!
Every time I tell myself, THIS is the DVXfest that I will enter and I never do, but this sounds too cool for me not to try. At least try harder than I have before.
rules have been posted. and funny enough, we had the same thought. one of the required elements is in fact... a mustache. also, your villain DOES NOT HAVE to be your protagonist, but they certainly can be.
damn required elements
I have a short that I'm having trouble finishing and it matches the theme perfectly, but doesn't have any of the required elements...
I'll need to squeeze one in somehow! @#$%$#
