DVXFest Sci-Fi Contest

Just make a limit of entries....first come..first serve...

max total of like 20-25 films......maybe thats too much...

i think 5 minutes is more than enough time to get the point across.. but maybe we can comprimise, like 7 minutes or something. 10 minutes no way, not only is 12 hours of SCI-FI painful, but that would kill the server faster than a speeding bullet.

I'm tellin ya.....make a list...or thread or suttin wher people post to claim a spot in the contest.....make a certain number of entrants so you and barry dont kill yourselves over uploading movies and loglines and stuff.

You dont see every Indie Filmmaker entering Tribeca or Sundance whenever they make a movie...they have to get onto a list before other people so they are sure they could show their movie...and if the person on the list doesnt have a movie...then next runner up goes in place.

It might sound a little unfair...but...it organizes everything.

also...with the movies...make them all into one big compressed WinZip format...so instead of having 2i93498327432 movies....have one big file like...300 mbs or suttin...dl it and open up the movies from there. So your server doesnt lag like crazy.

Yeah, but for it to work like Sundance or Tribecca, Jarred and Barry would have to first view all the enteries and decide which ones were allowed in. That is still a TREMENDOUS amount of work for them....

Wintry January night, the present. Order of events: an official contest announcement from one Jarred Land, then the frenzied three months of filming that you’ve just witnessed has alas met its end, but with nothing more enlightening to add beyond evidence of some last-minute editing across all points on the non-linear globe. You've heard of trying to find a needle in a haystack? Well, stay with us now and you'll be part of a thread whose mission is not to find that proverbial needle. No, their task is even harder. They've got to both screen and vote on not film noir nor western nor superhero nor dance-fest, but on a genre of a different color...and in just a moment you'll screen and vote with them, because you've just landed in The DVXUser Zone.

Yes that's tru...which would be rape for them.....then first come first show can work...the first like 30 contestants who post...Add me or suttin...go on a list...then after the 30th person...its closed...and the contest is between those 30 films.

yeah remember this DVXfest is our own little festival.. its a user thing, not a cash-cow like Sundance or Tribecca.. so things arn't gonna work like that. There will never be entry fees (unless me or barry start a really bad coke habit) and we wont be deciding who gets into the festival.

A cut off may however work.. thats something we will hafta talk about.

Great and when the first thirty posters all flake out, or they're gung ho in the beginning and then lose interest, or their films suck....

Nah, doesn't sound good to me. If you want to limit entries the only right way to do it is via screening. That doesn't mean someone has to watch the whole 5 minutes mind you. I'm sure they'd load one up and if it didn't grab them in 30 seconds it'd be off the list...

Well the point of the contests are to get people making films and get them active on the forum, if you're going to deny people entrance into the contest just because they weren't on the forum enough... you're probably going to turn them off to the forum in general and that's just defeating the purpose.

I agree that it shouldn't be limited to a certain number of entries, but no deadline extension would limit the total # of entries. In addition to that, seven minutes would work well. If you look at the majority of the zombie fest entries they were 17meg (the wmv ones at least).

That's why I was saying that you could do a ten minute and have it at the same file size.

I think registration would be a decent idea.

Have everyone register at the start of the contest (give only a limited time for registration)... that way you won't have surprise entries at the end... It'd be a good organizational tool and wouldn't really weed anyone out.

Well first off...i know Sundance and Tribeca make you pay...but that wasnt the message i wanted to get across...what i meant is they dont always accept all films.

A cut off would be more organized...but would dimish some aspiring filmmakers on here to enter the contest.
Like i said before..it sounds unfair...but in the same time..its more organized for viewers.

And i agree with Dj and TheYankee...yeah it would make people not want to visit this forum, because if they dont visit, they'll miss something important...and some cant always get access to the computer all the time.

This all seems unfair on one end....but then if one thing is unfair for some people..it benifits others....its a weird situation.

hm.......

maybe DJ's idea would work....give people like a week or two to register....and however many films get registered...thats the amount of films in the contest...and if people dont produce a film by the due date...they disqualified...

that works....then zipping the movies to compress them on the server.

I say that there is a two week registration window. Two months to make the movie. Due by the end of December. If you RSVP that you are participating and don't then you lose your eligibility for the next contest.

Then there is a window, any member who joins the forum during the contest can enter. The goal is to encourage people to make films.

This will let us know who is committing.

If we're a community then we encourage one another. If you make a commitment to making a film then at least others can help hold you accountable. It's like AA for shooters.

I definitely think a registration process would work. Do people think that there would 80 something entries again? I think that would be unlikely.

I think its unlikely..because...during the contest..like inthe middle of it...new people were making films and people didnt register before making a film....so it was all crazy and un organized.

Question...could you make a whole short in just CGI if you could? Not for prizes...just to make one and show people it.

If you can make a whole film in CGI then I think it could be entered but not qualify because it's a DVX contest. That's just me guessing

I figured.....cuz I was wondering about making a zombie flick back in like July with a consumer Sony to show...but it would only be for viewing..not competing.

If I do a Sci-fi..ill try to make it CGI..if i have enuff patience...but i jus wanted to clear a few things before i do anything.

Jarred and Barry are going to have to establish guidelines for dvx/nondvx footage. for the zombie contest, there was a 25% no-dvx allowance. In a genre that requires more CGI, that footage percentage may have to be increased.

I'm brewing up a few ideas... one of them requires ENG footage... not a whole lot, but I wouldn't want to flirt with that 25% mark in the edit... just to go over that mark and get DQ'd

idk. they may just maintain that 25% mark... whatever the outcome, though... I'm sure it'll be logical.

Quite frankly, I like the contest just the way it was. I think you guys are throwing ideas around (which in itself is a good thing) that serve no particular purpose.
