DVXFest Sci-Fi Contest

I began writing for the next contest today, and am not quite sure if this will fall entirely under sci-fi... so could we get a definition of sci-fi?

I know the undead contest turned into zombies for the last contest, and I don't want to be the guy who has the project that sticks out like a sore thumb because he didn't have the specifics before he began writing.

So for clarification for everyone, what are our limitations? Does it have to be space/alien related?

I don't think we're going to get specifics before the 1st of November.

Sci-Fi is such a huge category...it doesn't have to be just about aliens or space. I think we're trying to find a really tight definition of the genre in general.

I'm sure the contest will be fairly loose, in terms of the definition so it will be open to creatitvity. I wrote one last night. If it doesn't fit, I'll write one of the other ideas I have...if they fit... if they don't....screw you all!!!

The next contest has not been officially announced, and I for one, especially with all the talk about Sci Fi think that Jarred and Barry might throw us a curveball and request a musical.

Wait 13 days and the next contest will be announced or just start writing the project because you believe in it.

"science fiction, literary genre in which a background of science or pseudoscience is an integral part of the story. Although science fiction is a form of fantastic literature, many of the events recounted are within the realm of future possibility, e.g., robots, space travel, interplanetary war, invasions from outer space."

There's another one I found...

lol I know it's early, but I'd like to get started asap and I've got a decent story idea... I just want to get a general guideline of sci-fi (which I am sure will be a very loose definition).

I'm with you. I came up with about 4 ideas and wrote the one I felt strongest about. Either way, I want to shoot it. We'll find out in 13 days for sure!

I'm with the above. I wanna get MOOVING! I was pissed I couldn't get in for the sci fi stuff and am CLAMMORING to start working on something!

THROW US A FRIKKIN BONE~!!! :)

OK... time for me to get all cliché.

1. Patience is a virtue
2. Curiosity killed the cat
3. There was a time when Patience ceased to be a virtue. It was long ago.
4. One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life.
5. You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.
6. Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
7. There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.

Patience is cool.

But so is getting a head start and preparing.

I'll wait for the officially announcement patiently, but I'm ready for when they announce it to jump right in and start.

Take that energy then and bang the script out right now. One thing I've learned is you can never have too many scripts ready and waiting to go.

I've always thought the point of the DVXUser fests are to inspire people to make films. If everyone has an idea of what the festival is going to be take that energy and start working on the project. If it ends up not being the same as what the festival is going to be, well then at least you have the script ready and you can make the project.

It's about making movies.

I don't know where anybody got these rediculous thoughts in their head that some of us think it will go sci-fi.

LOL! Dude, you don't even want to go there, not with me in the game....

Of course I can't actually win a prize, so it might be fun....

Matt

That is too funny... I know you've already got a top 5 ready... me a forum member... and you, a real, live moderator. This is more then real... it's super-real.

MattC... Was your comment to me and my adult mention or to Stl's comment?

Too many Matt's round these here parts I reckon

MattSTL,

LMFAO, I can't believe you remember that!!! You know, I just started doing the titles for it and mixing it this past week, now that I have my studio assembled. Obviously it wont go into the contest, but I can't wait to show it none the less. I was debating whether or not I should, because I've learned a bunch since then and can really see what I did wrong, but I might anyway. Also I can't use it for anything because I'm cutting in music that I don't think I could secure rights for, but since it's just for my own amusement, I don't really care. When I'm done with it, I'll post it for peer review though.

I would like to get in on the next contest though. I've recently become friends with a unbelievable make-up artist (he's working on a feature in NYC right now). He was pissed we didn't do the Zombiefest so SciFi would be the next best thing.

I know the feeling MattC... that's why I'm "lobbying" for sci-fi... I feel I could have done a way better job with the horror aspect of our flick... and just a better job all the way around.

You're surprised I remember? Did you notice that I got a 671 and an fp24 shortly after viewing your vid? The audio you got with your XL2 was just another rung on the ladder that made me decide to improve the audio that I was previously happy with!

If you can't tell Yankee... it was us. MattC has a short in the can (almost) that I found very entertaining and technically excellent.
