DVX100B & Letus35FE

Hey guys,

I have a question:

I want to purchase the LetusFE for using it with my DVX100B. I know the LetusFE looses quite a bit of light, but I was wondering lets say you shoot indoors during day with windows around, so you get some good amount of natural lighting in the room.... what woould be the aperture setting on the DVX and on the lens on the LetusFE?

I know this is a very situational question, but considering the DVXs sweetspot is between f4.8 to f11, I was thinking is it possible to shoot at 5.6 on the DVX while using a lets say Canon 50mm 1.8???

I just would like to get an idea using the letusFE while trying to remain within the DVXs sweetspot. And of course I would like to be around f5.6.....

Any help, comments are appreciated!

Thanks!

L35FE loses about 1.5 stops of light. So go into the circumstance you're talking about with your DVX, get proper exposure, and then stop down 1.5 stops. That's where the L35FE would start. If the DVX is at f/4.8 or more, you're in okay shape. If the DVX is less than f/4.8, you'll have trouble.

If Im not mistaking your working with the Canons sweet spot now, not the Leica's, though proper exposure is still very relevant. Is F5.6 too dark or just unusal for indoors? little confused here...

Barry, I thought the LetusFE loses about up to 4 stops? Only 1.5 stops, thats even better!

I have another question: lets say you shoot interior during night time. You only have the practical lights for use, ceiling lights, table lamps, etc.... is that going to be tough to get proper exposure with the LetusFE?

Or in other words, can you generally use the LetusFE indoors without worrying about getting a lot of additional lights? It seems like from feedback I have read here, the letusFE is fine outdoors, but indoors you would need lots of lights....

Using a 1.4 lens it loses 1.5 stops. I measured it with a 1.8 lens at 1+5/6 stops. No way is it anywhere near 4 stops!

It's going to be tough for any adapter. But again, to find out if it'd be a problem with the Letus, take your camera into that scenario and see what kind of exposure it gives you. If you can open the iris up by 1.5 stops more, then the L35FE can handle it.

can you generally use the LetusFE indoors without worrying about getting a lot of additional lights?
No, and you can't do that with any adapter, and you really can't do that with many cameras out there either. An HV20 or FX7 indoors with no additional lights is going to give you a whole lot of gain to get decent exposure.

Thanks Barry! I seem to like the LetusFE more and more....

I think this calls for a purchase in the near future :)

And keep in mind that you want to close down whatever lense you're using to about 1-2 stops below its widest f-stop for maximum sharpness. So a 1.8 works best usually at 2.8, losing more lights that way.

I posted a while back about testing most of my 35mm lenses (I put them on a Nikon D80 & shot tests at all apertures & checked in Photoshop). 2.8 isn't even close... mine were all sweetest at about 5.6.

Take the 50mm 1.8 (very popular for adapters) for example... huge difference between 2.8 and 4.5/5.6. What surprised me was how soft f16 - f22 was. A real eye opener.

Wish someone would buy up a bunch of old Mamiya 6x7 bodies and make adapters out of those... that would be one big piece of vibrating ground glass!

when does production start and how much... when can they ship... can I get one by Sept-1st. I got a major feature starting then... lol

but seriously can that be done, large formats use GGs right?
