So,

I am working on a show and we are shooting with the Varicam (A-Cam) and the HVX-200 (B-Cam.)

We want 24fps progressive, but the ultimate end result for this project will be on video (29.97fps)

The project will be edited on an Avid Express and media composer.

So, in order to get the HVX to match, and cut with the Varicam footage what would the proper shoot setting for the HVX be???

I've been searching through threads looking for info, and there hasn't been any time to test. And now we are on location.

I am tempted to shoot 720p/24pn aas of this moment...but I am afraid it wont make the proper transition to a 29.97 timeline...

I AM going to test some of this on my FCP 5 system on my powerbook...but I know nothing of Avid.

Any help/advice is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Use 720/24p not 720/24pN. Because 720p24 is over 60fps like the varicam. The N mode only records the actual 24 frames. You will however get less recording time on the p2 card tho.

What would happen if you mixed 720p/24pN with Varicam footage?
Would the HVX200 footage lose any quality?
If you did shoot 720p24 on the HVX would that footage have pulldown applied?

Obviously, this makes most sense...

BUT I'm trying to figure out which format is Avid compatible. Can 24pn work on a 29.97 timeline???

This is why I hate brand brand new technology, no one has set answers, and those that do are few and far between and hard to find.

So, I shot some tests on 720p/24pn and put them into FCP and tried them on different format timelines...they worked on all of them....BUT since everything is converted to a .mov something has to be different overall then if I were to put this into an Avid.

Someone has got to have something more???

Well if your end format is 29.97 then as soarprod says 720/24p will record 24p on a 60i stream so you would wind up with 24p on a 29.97 timeline. If you record 24pN which only records the actual 24 fps on the P2 card it would seem if you put that on a 29.97 timeline your footage would be played back sped up a bit instead of being 24fps it would be 24fps played back at 29.97fps.

Right...but does Avid currently support 720p/24p?

This is the question I have not received an answer to.

Not sure maybe you should ask on the Avid forum on creative cow.

Here's the current list of Avid-supported formats.

XPress Pro and MC Adrenaline will both handle 24pN on a 24P timeline, and will work with 24P on a 60P timeline.

Thank you Barry. So, I can shoot 24pn and work with it in the needed timeline to cut in with Varicam footage?

We started shooting today, and I just went with 720p/24p to be safe...but if I can switch to 24pn so I have more shooting time per card that would be great.

I have the footage organized so that everything shot today on 24p is clearly seperated if I chose to go 24pn...I found my own way around Panny's stupid move of not being able to name cards and treat them as a "roll/mag/tape"
