I have a couple of 100As in my assortment of camera packages. I rarely ever recorded to tape. I recorded a mountain of stuff using DVRack to a laptop before Adobe bought serious magic and it became OnLocation. I picked up two long firewire cables from Laird. A 30 footer and a 70 footer. The 70 footer was about as long as you could go without using a repeater.
When I did use tape I used Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ. In fact I still have a case of them around.
So if I understand you correctly, just using the firewire you connect the camera to your computer, run OnLocation and then record it via your computer/OnLocation?
It's all 1s and 0s. The same DV stream that's recorded to tape is what is sent out via FireWire. So you can buy miniDV tape, or record to a laptop using OnLocation or direct from camera to a specially-designed hard drive (though I'm not sure they make those drives anymore).
OnLocation has a built in waveform monitor and vectorscope and of course is not subject to tape drop out, doesn't exercise any wear and tear on the heads or put any hours on them. If everything is perfect you should be able to match the quality of OnLocation with tape but then again there are so many more variables with tape. Its digital and aside from tape drop out its either there or it isn't.
