DVX100A vs. XL1S

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

I'm sure it is, Canon has a great line of lenses for video cameras--very high quality stuff, but they stiffed the XL-1. Considering how long the XL-1s has been out, they should have upgraded the stock lens to something with better optical quality and without those POS servos. 95% of XL-1s users brag about the interchangeable lens capability and 95% use the stock lens exclusively. ::)

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

Funny Barry.. as that is one of my big replies when people say "I can change lenses" and almost all of them never have, and are using the worst lens. I remember at NAB maybe 1? or 2 years ago when the GL2 came out.. wait a sec. wholly crap its already been 2 years.... anyways, I remember talking the the Canon guy about the lens and his take was that they put the lowest priced lens on there to make people do a lens upgrade. I dont know if he was joking or not, but there was probally some truth to that.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

That makes some sense, since Canon's experience is mainly with selling SLR cameras. When you buy an SLR package with a zoom, you might as well drop the lens in the trash--it's usually cheap and nasty with just passable optical performance. The expectation is that you're either an undemanding consumer that won't care or you'll upgrade pretty quick to the good stuff. It's their way of getting you into the system at a fairly low price point.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

yeah.. pretty much. It would be really funny if the XL2 came with the same lens.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

Too bad Nikon doesn't compete in this arena.  I just purchased a D70 DSLR the other day along with a couple of extra lenses and I am impressed.

I do own a Canon 19x 1/2" lens for my DVC200 and absolutely love it.  Of course, it set me back almost the same amount as the whole DVX100A.   Funny thing, in the pro market it is considered a cheap lens. Sigh.

You know, the D70 is exclipsed by the Rebel, but it is the real dark horse competitor, and I wish I could sling its glass in front of a prosumer camcorder. The D70 kit I looked at came with a great lens, where the Rebel's lens stunk on ice.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

Wow, the XL2 looks pretty bad ass. True 16:9 and 24p. what more could you ask for. Looks like the CCD's got a major upgrade as well. I don't think I can afford $5000 for a new camera. I think my next camera will be an HD model, but we'll just have to wait and see.

XL2 is already out....!!!!!

The real question is of course, do they actually exist and what do they really cost? If they are shipping in 2005, then the point is moot. If EVSOnline has them now and is ready to send me two, then my order may go to them in August. If Canon is willing to donate one to my college, I will write up a full professional review!

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

August delivery, $4999 MSRP includes 20x lens. No true manual controls on the lens though, you'd have to substitute the Canon 16x Manual lens to get that.

Then it is race, as it seems it is a DVX100a with the potential of having better glass at some point in the future. If I can find one that rivals the DVX100a in price point, then I may go with it. 4999 is going to come in 600 over the DVX100, which would be cool except you don't get the truely better lens.

Still, it is nice to see this come around after all this time.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

So . . . reasonably, EVS would carry them for around $4400-$4500.

$1000 more than a 100A (MSRP $3995)? For an unreviewed machine? Would take a Jedi salesman equipped with Ceti eels.to convince me there.

Or one who knew something about engineering. I am disapointed these were not at NAB.

No doubt, the DVX100a is my current direction of thinking. But I like to keep an open mind. I can be convinced, but I still wonder if the Canon is strong enough.

I buy 2-4 cameras a year though, so any purchase is not the end of the road, and I do not mind having two units of different makes on board.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

I would expect the XL2's street price is going to be $4800 for a while, until any pent-up demand is satisfied. And you may see a $100 or $200 drop on the DVX, maybe not. The price difference is going to be about $1500, near as I can tell.

Since you're buying two for your college, how 'bout one of each?

I have been thinking that, if I can con an extra 1500 out of our donors. Although a Mac department, I always have one PC editor around just for kicks, and at my last appointment we had Sony and Panasonic working side by side (I still fear JVC, but they have some nice stuff).

In the current plans, I have for the first time in my life dumped the ideal of having at least one big glass camera in my department. It is possible that the Canon could be my big glass substitue, while my Panasonic was my work horse. Unless a major corporation wants to support little Hilbert (wont happen, even when my uncle was the CEO of Electrovoice / Vega I could not score any gear -- companies that have gear to donate want to give it to the big names like NYU, who have all the money they need in the first place to get the gear they want) then this will always be an issue.

Still, if not this year, next year.
