Both seem to be great cameras, but I would like to hear from someone who is familiar with both. I am trying to decide which one I should save up for. Any info would be appreciated. ::)

Both are good cameras. The DVX100A though is a much later technology base than the XL1 with better audio and better chips. The XL1 had the advantage in glass, although that is closing someone with lense attachments.

XL1S is too much on accessories. You have to buy an attachment for the LCD monitor, you have to buy a new viewfinder if you want black and white. You have to buy a shoulder mount if you want XLR plugs. Needless-to-say get the DVX...

the Panasonic DXC 30 has run this route also. Balanced audio and a lot of other things become accessories.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

yeah uh ...seeing as though we all own DVXs and make fun of Xl1s... i dont get it.. statistically the DVX speaks volumes around the XL1 anyway.. even if you were going to base your choice off of stats between the two instead of user freindlyness or expeirince-the DVX technically blows it away. anyway nuff said, shop at S-MART and get a DVX :)

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

The XL1s is obsolete. It's been around in its basic incarnation since 1997. There are strong indications that a replacement may be announced on Jul. 14th.

As Bruce Campbell would say: Gimme some sugar, baby. (The sugar being the DVX of course.)

Also note: There is no form of this nature for the XL1. And if you buy the XL1, we won't talk to you or help you ever again.;)

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

If you buy the DVX, and someone with an XL1 says "Psh, I can interchange my lens!" Simply reply with "Oh yea? And what lens do you interchange?" 99 times out of 100 the answer will be "Well I can't afford one right now..."

When I bought my first low end personal camera, I bought the PD100a. This was in 1999 and there was no DVX100, but I could choose from the XL1 and the Panasonic 2000 at that time in the 3 CCD category. What sold me was: basic 16x9 capability, balanced audio, and the fact it was light enough to go on this nice little Libec I was using for still photography.

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

Just got my DVX and I'm blown away by the sheer quality of the output - it's not the epitome in terms of resolution but there is something very special about that picture. In the future folk'll be striving to achieve that DVX 25/24p cine mode look - forget film look. ;)

However, I'll not be getting rid of my XL1s. I am one of those who does have extra lenses and the thrill of owning a peice of kit that can give me the 35mm equivalent of a 2880mm telephoto (I have the EOS adapter and the 100-400 zoom) is not something I'm going to be giving up in a hurry.

And that is a very important niche that the XL1s holds all to its own. For extreme telephoto work there's nothing in the prosumer range that can touch it. Also, it can record four channels of audio, can't it? I think you can get an XLR adapter and actually record four live channels at once, which I don't think any other DV camera can do.

But it's had its day, and an XL2 is long overdue. XL2 may be very interesting, or not, we'll hopefully find out in a week!

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

the xl2 will run circles around the DVX, and thats coming from a dvx user. i'd suggest wiating for the xl2.

I would wait for it to say this. Not that it wont be good, but that it is essentially the same generation as the DVX100a I am not expecting a miracle at a thousand dollar price point. Plus, the XL2 needs to cover some major ground in user design (balanced audio, flat screen).

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

I would buy the DVX100A if you want the best miniDV camera out there that can offer you the closest thing to Film Look for under $25,000. I would buy the XL1S if you want something to prop open the screen door on a hot day! ;D

Re: DVX100A vs. XL1S

XL-2 will be introduced at NAB. I met this Videographer who, supposedly, is working on a commercial for the XL2. Watch out folks, it'll give our beloved DVX-100 a run for its money.

Harry

Yeah, it'll offer 24P....and more.
