DVX Scene Settings - In Camera Looks

Why I use the presets.

Why I use the presets.

For my workflow, the presets are a very useful tool.

After getting some "GREAT" advice, I learned how to name and save them to the "preset" dial (F1-F6) on the rear of the camera.

(turn dial to setting you want to re-define, go to setup menu, change settings, rename and save)

What I have found in just the first few months is that in most situations you are getting footage you have no control over. If I go in with a preset that I have in mind (or a couple) I can change angles and lighting so that I can get a better look to go with the results I want for the footage.

In post you can spend quite a while trying to duplicate such looks, and trying to add filters wihtout making the darks too dark and creating the look of over exposure.

I also found that it is easier to make slight adjustments with filters (if needed) once you have the good base footage captured.

My Settings:

F1 - Goldeneye (from this thread, have not used it yet, but had to have it!)
F2 - MTV 60i (Music Videos at 60i)
F3 - Spark (Factory, always like this one)
F4 - Sports (A must!)
F5 - MTV30p (Music Videos at 30p)
F6 - Epic (30p for weddings, softer look, -3 detail)

* Don't forget to set the WB, light is never a constant.

Thanks to the everyone who posted the settings in this thread, very useful.

Does anyone know of an EXCELLENT setting for church indoor wedding shots at 60i?
And maybe on for reception shots?
Mine tends to be on the blue side (100B), and my Cannon GL 2 tends to be a little on the red side.

Go back to the first page and use 8 Ball Press. I use it for sports and have it on 30p. I might also recommend shooting your wedding in 30p. It will look more professional, unless you are mixing footage with the GL2 then do 60i...

Is there a sample pic or footage of that preset somewhere? And no I am not mixing GL2 footage with the dvx, for this wedding.
Is there anything special I need to know about shooting or editing at 30p? All ways shoot and edit in 60i, and use Vegas Pro 8.
And is editing the audio any different? I always edit audio and video together, never seperate.
I also noticed on all these setting, they are for 24p. So how does the outcome of the video differ if I shoot 60i with these settings?

"The sky remains thanks to a polarizer filter." Im new to this. What is a polarizer filter? Is that an option on the camera? somthing you added to it?

if by 'the sky remains' you mean it stays nice and blue..please tell me how you did that

thanks

A polarizer is a filter that screws onto the lens. It helps block certain planes of light that can make the sky look lighter in video than it looks to our eyes, so with that light blocked the sky can look a little darker blue than it would without the polarizer. I'm simplifying some but it gets the point across. It gives the side benefit of helping cut reflections on glass and smooth water. A stock DVX takes a polarizer with 72mm threads.

i forgot to say - i am new to this forum and i am so excited as to how helpful everyone is about sharing information- it will make us all better film makers- i will right down the settings for my demo if anyone cares- and i also would like feedback good and the bad-

for the most part i shoot with my own scene setting then in fcp i drain all the color and my blacks get really crushed and oily looking- i have used this a lot lately and i am now in search of more looks. here is another with the "drained setting"

i shoot all my skating and snowboarding in 30p, so it's easier to extract the images, and I HATE interlaced personally. it looks a little cooler to slow it down in my opinion, but if you want your stuff very "video" looking instead of a little bit more "professional looking" then go for 60i

Can you share some more settings you like to use with 30p? shutter, and other stuff...

Im about to attemp to shoot some skateboarding with my dvx100a for the first time.

Hi Fevercity, and everyone;

Thanks for all the posting on Scene settings - very helpful! Keep up the great work! I don't shoot everyday, but want to improve the "look" of my videos - I'd really appreciate feedback on this.

DO you have a suggestion on Scene file settings for a travel show? And would you keep the same scene file for indoors and outdoors, and just WB for light - OR would you change settings? I know there's lots of variables involved (type of environment light, etc..), but I'm looking for a more of a run and gun type of quick setup for shoots.

Thanks much in advance! Really appreciate it!

Hi there,

I tried to use the settings for my 100A to make a HD Output after post.

Scene File 4
HD_30P

Detail Level; +7
V Detail Level; +7
Detail Coring; + 7
Master Ped; -7
A. Iris Level; -3
Gamma; Cine-Like
Knee; Auto
Matrix; Enriched
V Detail Freq; Thin

When I capture, I use the DVCPro codec to do it instead of DV NTSC 48Khz. Quality is much better. Then I do some color correct and I'm outputing using the Apple Prores 422 1080 codec.

Heres a still before color correction :
Ironic.jpg

Heres the video after color correction, got to view at 1080P :

I forgot to mention and specify that I shoot whit a frame rate of 30p and the shutter speed at 1/60. It helps make the image real clean and get rid of the motion blur.

DVX-11B Scene Settings for faded 1970s 16mm look

DVX-11B Scene Settings for faded 1970s 16mm look

I just discovered this forum. I'm been shooting with my DVX-110B for more than 3 years now and I love it. The scene setting on this forum string have been great. Does anybody have a scene setting that simulates that bluish faded 1970s 16mm film look?
