DVX Geniuses UNITE! 3K video solution. Less than 3K?

There would be no offset problems using a beam splitter.

TRUE! (If we only needed 2 cameras...we need 4 cameras...for now) For ~12FPS~ (D7000, 6fps/100frames) We want 24FPS. So there will be an offset like so: (The red and blue are actually backwards on the combined boxes...sorry)

RIG-with-FOV-D7000-upside-down.jpg

So here...we have 2 points of view that are ~MUCH~ closer...as mentioned before. Still same problem as you pointed out...but on wide shots...much less. STILL wouldn't work on closeups or macro (no way)...but medium...we'd have to see HOW MUCH, it would matter. :) YOU KNOW...one day soon...there will be an affordable camera like the D7000 bursting 12FPS for 100 frames...and YES...this will not be a problem at all. CAN WE DO IT SOONER? CAN WE DO IT NOW? Let's try!!! :)

There is no real need for any offset if you use the right tyoe of beam splitters and set them up correctly.

In this example I am using 3 beam splitters and 4 cameras - and there would be no offset, although there would be quite a bit of light loss, so for outdoors and well lit scenes only.

^NOW THAT'S WHY I'M POSTING HERE!!

Other people's ideas mix together...and before you know it, you have a GH13. :) In our case....3K STILLS 24P.

VERY INTERESTING LEE. SWEET! I agree that we'd lose alot of light...I wonder how much? Hmmm....

I also don't know how I'd go about building this....I'll have to think about it. Any ideas on how to build this as a rig? :) Let's do it!!!

OH...BTW...doing it this way would mean that there would be NO CROP. So...it would be all 16 megpix BABY!!! WAHOO!!

How many KKs is that? 16megpix?

8-10K STILLS 24P?

2 stops exactly (assuming perfect optics).

SWEET! I wonder what it would be with "not so perfect" optics...(testing/proving) the concept. (I know it would depend...I'm just thinking out loud)

Just skimmed this thread so it may have already been mentioned, errm, shutter actuations anybody? If each camera supposedly can shoot 100,000 frames or so before it starts wearing out, you'd only be able to shoot for 70-ish minutes before you start damaging it.

D7000 is rated at 150,000. Multiply that by 4 (4 cameras): 600,000 frames or just under 8 hours.

(maybe we are misunderstanding each other here)

Thanks for the follow up Lee. I believe the misunderstanding is coming from me basing things off of what was described by the DXVUser post (Dual 5dmIIs) as being 2 5d markIIs side by side. My oversight.

I can appreciate all of your points now that I understand the technique to be different from what I 1st assumed.

Thanks!

I know you weren't talking to me Grench...but it's not a big deal. You're not the first to misunderstand....and I'm sure you won't be the last. This is a NEW DIMENSION for all of us. :)

No problem, I think I got a little lost as well with all the 3D+HDR+Multi-Megapixel stuff flying around . . . !

I expect the 'Soviet Montage' video was done with a prism (illustration below) or with a half silvered mirror like HHL's (2 camera) example.

Nice diagram Lee. We should post this on the other (HDR thread for 2 5ds) thread so that people who are looking at it have an idea. I know that, (if you read this whole thread), I didn't know what a beam splitter was...or the VARIOUS things that people are doing with them (HDR, 3D)....and for the "5K Still 24P" idea....I think it is alot for people to take in. Once you see a beam splitter....it all makes sense....each implementation in fact.

So...Lee....thank you again for your 3 beam splitters idea for 5K(ST)24P. I think I have some ideas of how to build a cheap rig to test the idea. I'll post some pics later. (I'll try to make them more bearable. :) ) But thank you so much for hearing me out...and thank you much more for your GREAT idea(s) and perspective. :)

5K(ST)24P is still a pipe dream....but....if we could do it....it would be WICKED!!! :)

OK guys. I just got back from the hardware store and I'm 90% sure I know how to build a beamsplitter with 3 points, that has 4 "ports" for 4 cameras (D7000s when they are released hopefully). :)

It won't be "pretty"....but it should be effective. It will also be cheap...if anyone else decides to give it a try. :)

It's basically going to be PVC piping (4in?) with PVC joints. I will be using a chop-saw to cut 45 degree angles at each junction. I won't cut them all the way through, so the bottom basically holds it together. Then, I'll just "insert" the "two-way" glass. Cameras will then attach at each port. :) That should do it. :) It's going to be "rough" for now, because we need to "prove" the concept first.

Here's question for you Lee. I'm expecting a VERY narrow field of view, (long/narrow focal length, due to the design), but...will I want a "macro" lens because it's focus will be on a "mirror" that is inches away from the front of the lens....OR.....will it be a "normal" focus function based on the fact that it's ACTUAL focal point will be several meters away from the FRONT of the "light entry point" of the unit its self? We'll find out obviously...but...I'm just wondering out loud here. :)

Nice diagram Lee.

Cheers. :)

For 3D using simple mirrors is much cheaper and avoids the associated light loss of a beam splitter.

No, you don't want to focus on the mirror in any construction you might make (unless you want to film the surface of the mirror !!).

....OR.....will it be a "normal" focus function based on the fact that it's ACTUAL focal point will be several meters away from the FRONT of the "light entry point" of the unit its self?

Yes, you want to effectively ignore mirrors, prisms, beam splitters - they simply bend the light around corners.

If you are filming a cat - focus on the cat !!

: )

Thanks Lee. I'm actually looking forward to building this rig. It will take a couple of weeks likely...but...I don't think it will be a big deal. The delay will mostly be from having to order parts. I'll post schematics later.
