DVX Geniuses UNITE! 3K video solution. Less than 3K?

^Cool pic! Very home made indeed! :)

I MUST say though: You all know we're just talking right? And I WAS kidding about the beam splitter by this weekend, cheap, easy, ...I WAS kidding...but...I think I actually CAN do it. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

AND...that pic that you just posted...that gives me an idea of how we can have 4 cameras instead of two....without too much effort. HONESTLY...thanks for posting that. And thanks for the discussion. It has given me some ideas. If nothing else....I'll use my beam splitter for HDR video. I thought that was FREAKIN COOL. If we get this to work...BONUS!! If not...I won't cry. No biggie. Thanks Morgan.

And for your amusement an element technica double red on location..

SWEET! :)

So here's what I'm thinking to build this thing. There is this "mount" from Home Depot ($6) that should work perfectly for mounting 2 cameras at right angles. Then for the 45 degree glass, ...I was thinking the picture frames from Wal-Mart that are used for displaying certificates. They're $2 a piece and the edges are smooth because they know they'll be removed frequently. Then, I was thinking that I'd use the reflective/see-through film that is used on car windows. I'll just adhere that to the glass. I'll have to rig something to hold it at a 45 degree angle, but that should do it. :) Badda-bing...Badda-boom. DIY splitter for under $20. :) I'll post pics.

It worked!!!! Pics and short vid coming! PLEASE note....this will NOT be finished HDR or 3D video. It's video of 2 DSLRs on my VERY QUICK rig with the 45 degree glass...with both screens shooting the same thing (except of course that one is upside down and backwards) :) The rig actually worked better than I could have imagined. WOWSER!

I'm aware that "the devil is in the details"....so this is ONLY THE BEGINNING! Refinement of the rig and it's adjustments and the editing process will be LOTS of work....however. We now have a DIRT CHEAP BEAM SPLITTER!!! WWWAAAAHHHHOOOOOO!!!!!

Just remember guys...this is just the beginning! I'll be giving this some more time this weekend and I'm confident that it will work for HDR video...I'm almost POSITIVE that it would also work for 3D video....and we'll just have to take some time (months of effort I'm sure) to see if we can't get some 3K video synched from photos. (Like I said, we might be several years early...but we'll see) :) Good night. Mad love to DVXusers everywhere!

Serendipity?

Nikon D7000 shoots 6fps, continuous for 100 frames, 16megpx.
4 (Four D7000s) X 6 fps = 24fps.
4 X 100 frames = 400 frames / 24fps = 16.5 seconds (per take)

In this scenario the synching is taken care of by using triggers just like the Barry Bonds video.

The way I would arrange the cameras is by "stacking" 3 cameras (D7000s) on top of each other. The reason why you "stack" them is because many of us wouldn't mind losing the top resolution (from the top) camera...and the bottom resolution from the bottom camera because you could do a 2:3x:1 crop anyway. The fourth camera would be put on the beam splitter. There you have it.

24 frames per second (for max 16.5 seconds)
16megpix resolution
20 stops of range* (guessing here... :) )
RAW flexibility (process in Lightroom 1440 images per/min)
Life span of unit = appx 7hrs. (150,000 pics for Nikon D7000) x (4 cameras) / (24fps) / 60 (min) / 60 = (hrs of usage)
Less than 5000usd

Still a pipe dream....still interesting.

.....I'm almost POSITIVE that it would also work for 3D video....

For 3D you would need a horizontal offset, you may as well do this by facing both cameras forward rather than compromising video quality by shooting reflections and/or through glass and film.

Or just grab a cheap 3D Lens that shoots L + R onto the same frame.

The D7000 cannot shoot 24fps at anything above 1080p - certainly not 16MP !!

No. It can't. But ~4~ of them can. :) That was the point of the post.

EDIT: I added a paren with the text (Four D7000s) to avoid being misunderstood again (on the original post).

True. Offset is achieved on this rig, (if you look closely), by rotating the "macro rail" 90 degrees, then you have adjustable offset to adjust the perceived parallax.

As far as reflection losing quality...true...but I saw this Epic Red configured the same way. (They went from the bottom instead of the top.)

But...after seeing that HDR video....someone has already figured that part out. HOW? I don't know....he said that he's using:

Yeah, I'm still awaiting a reply on a question I asked him in reference to the distance between lenses and between camera and subject. It was pretty much a dead on merger using 2 5d Mark IIs.

Hi Grench. Are you saying that you asked HIM (the creator of the HDR video on VIMEO) this question? Cool!

Didn't slumdog millionaire use 11fps burst mode on a DSLR for some crowd shots? If I recall it won the oscar for best cinematography.

GH2 is rumored to have "Super high-speed burst shooting of 40 fps (lower resolution)." If we could get this to 24p even, or some easily modified number that could be exciting..depending on whether "lower resolution" means 2k or VGA.

Ya. I hear ya Ben. What REALLY excites me about it is that it HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE BEFORE. And although you hear the guy in the video saying that it took him 5 days to get his stuff to synch right, ...he didn't really care to do it on-going. That's to say that in our case there are many more of us...and we should be A LOT MORE MOTIVATED. If we could do this, even if only for 12 second bursts.....GEEZ....that would truly be amazing. I don't think it would be "fun" to work with the 1440 RAW images per minute....but it's not too bad to work with stuff in batches in LightRoom....and HOLY GRAIL OF INDIE FILM....it would be RAW FREAKIN 24P with NO LINE SKIPPING!!!

Another thing....all the people who do the "time lapse" stuff....there are more and more of them. There are better tools and workflows...we could use their stuff for our workflows for now. Lightroom has a new HDR plugin too, (out next month), we'll have to see about that. Anywho....I truly believe it is a MATTER OF TIME before someone cracks this nut.

Another thing to consider is that ...the way things are going...higher frame rates for cheaper money...eventually, you'll have ONE camera bursting for 400 frames at 24fps. (5 years maybe?) But certainly you'll have 12fps MUCH SOONER. (Next year maybe?) And more affordable in 2-3 years? So my point is....they aren't going to burst SLOWER. :) If we get the workflow down, I'd bet it could be leveraged for a good decade for us indies that would like RAW video NOW...for less than 5000usd. The workflow wouldn't be "pretty"....BUT CAN YOU IMAGINE THE FOOTY??? ...THE RANGE? THE JOY?? PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST!!?? (ok...maybe not...but we're on the same page) :)

When I look at these specs and think about this...do you know what REALLY FREAKS ME OUT about this is:

If we could:
1. Build a rigging system to interconnect/overlap fields of view.
2. Consistently synch high fps DSLR cameras.
3. Batch with numbering/ordering systems
4. Workflow/post into 2K+

Many of the WICKED STILL FUNCTIONALITIES would become CINEMA CAMERA functionalities for indie film makers. WOWSER!! That makes me DROOL to even think about that.

Notice from the D7000 link above, "High Speed 6 fps continuous shooting"....I'm sure it would work to varying degrees across 4 cameras, but DANG!!! That would be WICKED FOLLOW FOCUS!! :)

Ah! I see what you mean now.

How would you get their images to align while filming, your explanation was not entirely clear, I'd expect cameras simply stacked on top of one another to render slightly different images - with this problem getting worse the closer the object of interest is to you.

True. Offset is achieved on this rig, (if you look closely), by rotating the "macro rail" 90 degrees, then you have adjustable offset to adjust the perceived parallax.

The would not work, you need a horizontal translation, rather than a rotation.

Imagine this:

. . . if your two eyes where in the same spot (impossible - I know but bear with me !) then you would have mono-vision . . . . if you were then to translate one eye horizontally you would get stereo vision . . . but if you were to rotate one eye you would still have mono-vision but with mis-registered images.
