DVX Geniuses UNITE! 3K video solution. Less than 3K?

OK. So here's a crazy idea that's been rattling inside my head:

Watch this first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AuyVz89AXg

OK. Next...enter some camera like the Panasonic FZ100: http://www.dpreview.com/news/1007/10072108panasonicdmcfz100.asp

So it shoots 11fps FULL RES. Or 60fps at lower res.

We'd have to do some Vitaliy level VOODOO to synch them, then process them but.....I dunno. What do you guys think? 3 cheap cameras synched to produce 3k video?

If this gets deleted, I'll know that I AM as crazy as it seems. :)

Added for reference: Look at this cool idea of synching two 5D Mark IIs for HDR video. This was the trigger for me SHARING my insane thoughts. :)

it doesn't actually list it, but i imagine the camera's buffer would run out pretty quickly. could still be cool for music videos and stuff with really quick cuts

That's true. So, I was thinking that you'd have 4-5 of them (FZ100) 400usd ea. Or however long it takes to recover from the buffer. So you would cycle through about one camera per second (or 2 per second at full res).....until you could cycle back to the first camera. Heck with Red Camera's prices going up...you could buy 10 of these for 4K. Selling them after the fact wouldn't be a problem...they are really a hot camera on ebay (I own the FZ35).

To be honest, I think there are better candidates than the FZ100, but...the FZ100 is also full manual on video now too...so (even though this would be photos)...having these aside would be fine for the mad scientist who tried to build this thing. :)

You would have to spend a lot of cash on super fast cards, no?

Also true. Class for now....I know faster is coming out....but I doubt that it (the card) would be the bottle neck. To be honest, one reason I even brought this up, us because of the other thread where a guy is synching two 5d Mark IIs to shoot HDR video. So....I know that it's been done with still photography (as in Barry Bonds pics)....it's been done with video for HDR....I ~think~ this may be possible. But...to be honest....I think it's a little out there. But not much further than HDR *video* on the 5d Mark II...so...I'm just curious what my fellow DVXers think. :)

The problem would really be getting the perspective of each camera to line up well enough that you could intermix the frames, it'd definitely limit your shot design, but maybe with the right crop it could be done, i.e, say, put 4 cameras side by side, and go wide, that way you've got them all looking straight ahead, say your subject is in the middle of the shot, the subject will be in a slightly different spot on each camera, but with such a large image to be working with, you might be able to crop the image from each camera a little both horizontally and vertically and then match them up - if you put markers on the wall, to be later removed in post, that would probably make it fairly easy. It's really a question of how long you can run those cameras at 11fps and how much noise that would make, but for something with no location sound, or something where you'd want to do cg or keying, it might work well. The other issue is of course, syncing the cameras so you get the right cadence.

Would love to see something like this come together, however - I'm with you for trying to figure out *how* it could be done, rather than why it *can't* be done.

The Casio EX-F1 would be your camera... 1-60p at around 3K (2816 x 2112). The buffer only last for 60 frames though.

I check their site every day for a new version... even 240 frames would be enough for some cool shots.

not cheap but those 3d rigs (element technica) seem to have a semi transparent mirror at 45 degrees

nikon D3is good for 12FPS in crop mode is it not ??

fire with a Pocket wizard delay, as per the vid ..

This was my first concern too. But...after seeing that HDR video....someone has already figured that part out. HOW? I don't know....he said that he's using:

" each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter. "

Beam splitter? I'll google this and see whadup-wit-dat. So...I'm not to sure that this is a significant problem. Synching...I think this is the one to wonder about. I agree with Morgan_moore with the more advanced cameras "pocket wizard delay"....but that would be MURDER on the life-span of the cameras, and the D3s isn't affordable enough to justify such a choice. But...I'm with you on that.

NOW this part is a FANTASY....but....having a "relay" with 3 ports? This way you'd get depth of field also...and all three would be getting the relay image from ONE common location. ....I dunno really. Obviously I'm just thinking out loud. Maybe it will fall upon the eyes of someone with a better solution though. Now that we are all fairly certain that anything 3K in image size is going to be 8,000+(and that only when Red Camera Co actually launches).....something like this may have a place in the world for a while...(until Panny or Canon starts doing higher than 1080p.)

Beam Splitter

A box. Camera behind the box. Camera positioned bird's eye on the top.

Light hits the 45 degree mirror; half passes through to the camera behind; half is reflected upward to the bird's eye camera.

I've seen them for about $5,000.

^WOWSER! That can't be cheap. Pretty wicked though! We need to get the DIY MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE, AKA TeddyBear to make us a cheap version of a beam splitter with some yarn and duct tape! (YOU DA MAN TEDDY BEAR!)

to start simple if you use a bit of a tele the alilgnment can be OK even with cameras just tight together on one tripod - Ive done this for two tests..

a 5d at 25p and a 7d at 60p for a timeramped mega crashzoom effect..

and a D3 and 7d in an effort to get sharp stills that look like grabs from motion..

Doing the double D3 could be cool for bursts..

-the ultra high res would give plenty of room for stabilisation software or panning in post

- the cont AF would be mind bending

Im actually thinking about having a serious go at this, it could do shots a red could not

youd probably get 22FPS, but considering action sequences would be the use 22/over24/25 could make it look a little faster and more actionee..

^cool! Thanks for posting that! I'm going to HACK together a quick and dirty mount for a beam splitter. I just happen to have something that I think will work. This is PURELY for the mount. To be honest, I think we might be 1 year maybe 2 years early for this to work with only 2 cameras....(using a beam splitter).

As for using some zoom Morgan....ya...I know what you're saying. If you used enough, the difference of perspective would be minimal....far enough back, (zoomed in enough)...it would be almost zero. YET ANOTHER reason why the FZ100 might be a good solution because it has an INCREDIBLE ZOOM. Hmmm...
