DvRack workflow and use...

I'm still debating if the dv rack is good for me. Would dvrackHD be precise enough to judge focus with the hvx?? Im using it on a macbook with bootcamp. My idea would be to mount the laptop to my tripod using this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=3976&A=details&Q=&sku=5575&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation . That way i could hit two targets with one stone get good focus more easily(witout buying a marshall monitor ) and also get longer record times...

The dvrackhd demo version i had never allowed me to record for more then 40 seconds at a time before freezing so i never got around to try it for focus....my guess is its because i have 2 gigs of ram(i read theyre was a bug with computers with 2Gram). Did the update fix that problem?

My other concern is how to get the data back to the original p2 format. I have a very nice workflow with raylight and vegas with wich i can render back to p2 using p2 maker. How is the editing with the dvrack dvcprohd codec in vegas? Can you get realtime preview? If it works well i guess i could edit in vegas with the dvrack codec , render to raylight and then use p2 maker ... I want to be able to read the edited footage with the camera , to be able to use my footage on any platform and be able to achive it in the original format.

Hope my post makes sense...i guess my problem is trying to do everything i need without blowing the bank. Surely it would be easyer to get a firestore and marshall but i cant afford it for now...

I don't know much about capturing on a mac then converting back to MXF for editing in Vegas . . . lotta steps there huh?

But--the patch certainly cured the freezing issue with my workstation . . .

Also, I have been very satisfied with the focus capability of DV Rack 2.0 HD when using my widescreen Toshiba laptop. It is (larger screen/lotta pixels) equivelant or better than what I get with my Marshall.

Best.

DV Rack is the ideal companion for working in Vegas, but if you want to get it back to the cards then you'd have to use Raylight/P2 Maker to get it there.

As for editing and realtime preview; my Core 2 Duo can get realtime 720/24p, but no way will it handle 60p or 1080 in realtime. If you want fast realtime DVCPRO-HD editing on the PC, EDIUS is the best for that. With Vegas you have to use one of the plug-in programs and you'll need a very very very fast computer to get realtime performance.

Raylight can give you realtime editing at draft quality or medium quality; it has adjustable quality level settings. But if you're capturing with DV Rack, that wouldn't come into play, as it would create a file that's going to use the Serious Magic codec, not Raylight.

Barry,

How will the Serious Magic codec effect editing with Edius Broadcast? I am planning on doing some capturing with DV Rack and editing same footage with Edius. Would it be more prudent to capture straight into Edius?

Can that even be done?

Any tips on the workflow with these two programs would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can capture on DV Rack using the Canopus AVI file type; I believe I've done that and imported the files into EDIUS directly although now that you ask that I'm not 110% sure...

Yes, you can capture AVI files using DV Rack and then import the clips into the Edius bin or timeline, or simply drag-and-drop them. Edius doesn't need the DVCProHD Decoder since it has its own built-in codec with both decoding and encoding support.

Barry- I did a test on that the other night...works quite well but I'm having a problem. I can export to Canopus HQ and windows media files, but if I export to Quicktime there is no video (well actually there is but it's not representative of what was on the timeline).

Also I might add that if you use an AVI fourcc changer like
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/avi_fourcc_changer.cfm

you can change the DVCrack AVI into a self-contained raylight AVI. Change the fourcc from dvh1 to RAYL in both places.

I have Vegas and Rayligh since my laptop is all i I have for a little while longer and it is quite weak. It has a 2.2 AMD Turion 64, 1G RAM (and an ATI video card with 128MB dedicated but I belive Vegas doesn't use the Video Card). I am buying DVrackHD when my trial is up and I just saw this post.
So what I want to understand is the way that DVrack captures, and how that would come into play with the Vegas/Raylight workflow. I am not sure I understand, but from what you said it seems that this wouldn't work. DVrack HD caputres in a codec that is not compatible with the way Raylight works?

Right, but DV Rack HD installs the proper codec anyway. So when you capture footage using DV Rack HD, you can immediately drop it right on the Vegas timeline. No need to use Raylight for those files.

This I know... but will I be able to use Raylight to cut them with ease in my slower computer?

Hi uslatin, theyre is a small app named dvfilm maker hidden a folder when you unzippe raylight for instalation. I m still having problems but your supposed to be able to convert quicktime dvcprohd to raylight. see http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=78484
I'm still fiddling with it and i often get an error message .Im probably doing something wrong. Still i got confirmation from Marcus at raylight, it's supposed to work. I wish i was intergrated in the raymaker....

Btw i got the manfrotto laptop platform(they call it projector platform) connected to my tripod with an arm and clamp. Its working really well. I get long time capture and easyer focus. I'm capturing with final cut pro for now...untill i have the money for dvrack.

hey, can you post a picture or two of that setup? please! I's love to have something like that too!

Ok, thanks!

Can someone do a brief step by step of the HVX HD footage being captured with DVrack and then edited in Vegas using Raylight to make the editing prosess lighter.
