I am wondering if DVD SP2 can work with 23.98fps files from FCP 5.0.4? When I step through the clip in the viewer it clearly steps through 29 frames. Am I missing something. These clips were recorded in 24pn on P2. Anyone? Do I have to do the obvious and spend more money and upgrade?

check your export settings from FCP.
DVDSP doesnt change your framerates.
It supports 24

Hmm honestly I can't remember if version 2 supported 23.98, can't remember ever using it with 2.

Version 2 was the first to support 23.98.

DVDSP will display your 23.98 encode as 29.97 because that is what a standard TV will playback. Both DVDSP and any set-top DVD player will add pull-down to your encode so it plays back at 29.97... just like the Hollywood movie DVDs.

To be sure you have encoded correctly, you could open your 23.98 encode in QT player and check the "get info" window. It should tell you if it is actually 23.98.

On a properly set up progressive DVD set top it will play progressive.

Once again this forum pays off. Thanks to all. I hope I can hi-jack this thread to ask if FCP 5.0.4 P2 import removes the flagged frames from a 1080/24pa clip being imported through FW? It does not seem to. Is there something to check off? I hear people talk about later versions of FCP but not too much about 5.0.4.

I've had nothing but dicey results with 1080/24pa imports in any version of FCP from 5.0.4.

Even in 6.0.2 with the preferences checked, I don't get the pulldown removed.

Having checked my test on a DVD player in progressive mode, the clip does indeed step through at 24fps, hail mary. 720/24pn mode looks really good when its done properly.

So to sum up, DVD Studio Pro 2 will make 23.98 DVDs.
