I cant get an answer on this question. Why down grade hd to sd? It may be a dumb question but it is not covered in BARRY GREENS book.

Lastly what is the most basic way of burning HVX200 footage to dvd? I use FINAL CUT PRO and burn to toast. Is it just like any other footage or do I need to use DVD STUDIO PRO? If someone can share their workflow with me I would appreciate it.

You would downrez HD to SD if you had to distribute in SD (among other potential reasons). For example, DVD is a standard-def medium. If you shoot HD and you want to distribute on DVD, you're going to have to downconvert to SD.

And what if i dont down convert hd? will it look badly?

Thanks barry love the book. Just got it a week ago.

Last question do i have to use dvd studio pro to get good quality footage?

ok so absolutely last question.

Please direct me to the thread that explains i downrez hd to sd.

And when you say i wont burn a dvd or reach 99% what do you mean by that?

The disks playable in standalone DVD players are standard resolution, 720x480 in our neck of the woods. You cannot put high definition video on a DVD and play it in a standalone DVD player. Thus, you have absolutely no choice but to downconvert for the foreseeable future unless you want to only produce content for the 1% or so of people who have a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player.

Downconverting should be done automatically by your editor if the project/sequence settings are correct. If you need details, I would ask in the FCP forum.

Pimp,

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking but I sense there may be some confusion with backing up to dvd and downresing to dvd. Many of us back our footage up to dvd for storage and have discussed the practice at length on the boards. This process involves burning a DATA DVD, not a VIDEO DVD. In this case, our footage is saved as data files and remains unaltered hd goodness. When authoring a VIDEO DVD, current dvd players (with a couple of acceptions) will only play SD footage and will require you to downres your footage. This type of dvd would not be appropriate for backup of your footage, rather, it should be used for distribution to the masses.

To burn HD data backups, you will use software like Toast, Finder, YuBurner etc. For downrezing and burning SD video DVDs you will use software like FCP, DVD Studio, iDVD, and compresser.

Again, I'm not sure if that's the info you were looking for, but hopefully it helps.

From your DVCPRO-HD Sequence in FCP, save it as a QuickTime movie, NOT self-contained (self-contained QT mov = extra compression = lower image quality). Take that into compressor and do a 16:9 MPEG-2 file for regular SD DVD authoring. It's that simple.

I take a current settings out of a 720/24p sequence to a QT movie.

Drop that into a custom encode droplet in BitVice 1.7.

Best SD DVDs I've ever seen.

As an aside, you should see the HD DVDs on a Toshiba player. They look like broadcast HD.
