DVCPro 50 on special miniDV tapes?

I understand that HVX200 does not record DVCPRO-50 on miniDV tape. However, I read somewhere that Panasonic develops a special metallic miniDV tape that specially designed for HVX200 to record DVCPRO-50. Is this true? Thanks.

I thought the only difference was the use of metal tape instead of ME tape.
More robust, less dropouts for digital, the oposit for analog.

The main difference between DV recording and DVCPRO / DVCPRO50 is not the tape but the tape mechanism and video drum. A DV videodrum willl never be able to do DVCPRO 50.

Yup, it's an issue of data transfer rate, I believe. DV can't handle 50Mbps. Perhaps you're thinking about DVCPRO-25? That might work, since it will fit under the 25Mbps limitation of DV format. But the tape speed is different for the two, as well as head size and number.

See Jan's article here: http://www.adamwilt.com/D7playsDV.html

Just to add to the confusion, the FCP 5.04 update page also refers to DVCPRO50 recorded on tape on the DVX...

Yeah, the FCP info does mention that.
Maybe Apple is going to ship some special tape soon.
iDVC or something :)

The only thing Apple will probably ship in a year or so are iPods:lipsrseal

Yes, but they're 100% completely wrong. There is no DVCPRO50 recording capability on tape on the HVX.
