DV50 Issues

Recently shot a bit for a client Dv 50 greenscreen. I exported the MXF's with P2 log pro to QT files and handed them to the client.

The quicktimes look good on my system but the client reports severe jaggies and generally poor resolution. Their workflow is to bring the QT's into CS3 after effects and do the comping inside AE. It is AE that is really showing the artifacts. Thier system apparently has the proper updates and has QT 7.2

Any body ever run across anything like this before?

As I said, if I look at the files on any of my Macs, they look fine...

Does the video look OK when they play it using QuickTime Player? It sounds like a problem with their AE project settings.

That's what I think too. Looks good to me on my computer but I'm trying to help them iron out their bugs...

They are running their post on a Mac, and they did a test ingest into FCP and it looked like it should, but a QT exported from FCP looked funky with the same jaggie issue.

Sounds like a QT issue to me but I can't put my finger on it.

And the answer is:

The AE artist working with the QT clips I shot and supplied was definitely see funky looking video in both QT and in AE, while when I looked at the same QT clips they looked fine.

So take a trip to Quicktime player prefs, look for the "use high quality when available " check box and make sure its checked off. Re open the funky looking clips and shazam - they look right.

The AE artist also had to turn "fields off" in AE when importing footage, and once again Shazam the clips looked as they should.

Why should HQ be checked "off" ?

It sure sounds like a "field order" problem in After Effects. Make sure when he imports the footage, he sets the field order to "lower field first" and the comp pixel aspect ratio is set to D1/DV .09 non square. This is for dvcpro 50 of course. Otherwise, your footage will look like crap.

This case is closed thanks to your input. The designer is merrily comping away.
Another issue I discovered along the way was that in QT player prefs there is a HQ setting to check off, otherwise quicktimes will look like sh*t.
