Dumping P2 footage to TWO hard drives at once...

This has been recommended quite often on this forum, but how to do it has not been discussed.

I am wondering how one does this in FCP's LOG and TRANSFER, as well as P2CMS.

Also, when dumping to TWO HDs, does this mean 1 internal, 1 external? or 2 externals?

Furthermore, I've heard that dumping two externals, BOTH with fire wire can overload a laptop or something along those lines? Is this true? If not, if one is to use a USB, won't this slower medium slow down productions greatly as one does not want to format a P2 card until they are guaranteed at least 2 back ups are acquired. So even if your HD with Firewire dumps a 64P2 with lightning speed, it doesn't matter, because you are waiting for USB?

Any light shed on these situations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Log and transfer will ingest DVCProHD footage to the Final Cut Documents folder you have established when setting up a project.

You can't set two targets.

In my workflow set up a CalDigit VR set to RAID1 over FW800 and have no problem offloading the cards at all. Did a 3 day corporate shoot with hours and hours of footage.

Also had another VR daisychained in RAID 0 and digitized the QT's to there and edited from that. All on a MacBookPro.

We mean when you offload the P2 cards...the RAW footage. Copy to two FIELD DRIVES at once, not media storage when you import into FCP. You can either get a RAID 1 solution, or get two drives, attached separately, or first one, then the other, and use soemthing like SHOTPUT Pro from www.imagineproducts.com to do the automated offloading for you.

I use Shotput Pro to go into my external and my clients external drive at the same time - hands free- while I continue shooting. I use a PB G4 with a PCMCIA slot so i can load the card directly into the computer. One of the drives uses the fw800 port, the other the fw400. The speed varies by drive, connection and the type of verification you have selected.

Shotput Pro lets you choose up to three destinations to download the card.
