Duel adapter and snow leopard not yet compatible

As far as I can tell- Panasonic has made a 3rd party P2 reader almost impossible via licensing and technical issues-
Wait -- how do you come to this conclusion? There are many 3rd party P2 readers.

Duel Adapter
Rosewill adapter
Addonics Expresscard adapter
Amtron PCI slot reader
Sonnet QIO

The problems lie squarely with the operating system under discussion, has nothing to do with Panasonic or licensing!

I think what many wish for is a single card reader with transfers via FW800 in the $500.00 range that isn't a low cost PC laptop.

ive said it before, ill say it again. its just connectivity. if you can get a new laptop with pcmcia and/or expresscard functionality for $500 its cant be THAT hard to create a device that simply deploys the connection functionality of that device for about the same price.

i guess the variable lies in, could the company recoup their design/manufacturing costs before the demand for the format itself wanes... id say probably. but im not in the manufacturing biz, so its just an uneducated guess.

it seemed to me that the duel folks were 90% there. mine worked great. but i was always a little suspicious of the rigidity of the cable and brittleness of the card housing.
if they could get over the snow leopard thing, convert it to fw800 or usb and rubberize the housing theyd be legends...

If Panasonic is introducing a new low cost P2 card reader, I would be amazed if it used FW. Panasonic seems very PC oriented overall although they could surprise us. All of the various Panasonic P2 devices I have tried have been USB only and were deadly, deadly slow for transfer. It does seem a shame that they won't go for GB Ethernet, that seems like a logical, fairly universal way to get into the computer quickly with these healthy amounts of Data I/O needed to transfer P2 quickly.

For me it's the same concept so sorry if that wasn't clear. Anyway point is if you're cutting FCP and a lot of us are- like it or not- there's not a simple/cheap solution in sight.

as far as i know you cant boot from a thumb drive. can you?
as far as i know you can boot from any volume with osx installed on an intel mac. you have options...

what you might consider is partitioning your internal drive into two segments. put snow on one and leopard on the other.
last time i checked you can't partition a raid 0, which is what is in my mbp. this might have changed. anyone know for sure? i don't feel like repartitioning for no reason. my main concern is that if i am running off a usb drive, the p2 transfer might be slow, depending on how much the usb drive needs to be accessed during the transfer, which would negate the work around. obviously i wouldn't be transferring to the usb drive, but to the internal raid or external firewire drive, depending on the situation.

so to clarify and restate the question, how much does the boot volumes speed effect the transfer, p2>DA>mbp?

Duell adapter and Snow Leopard : a solution

Duell adapter and Snow Leopard : a solution

My workflow based on P2 Duell Adapter and my Mac Book Pro 17" (2007) was messed up after upgrading to 10.6.

Here is the solution I found and applied with success, after few weeks using the USB (so slow) connexion of my HPX 171 :

I made a 20 Gb partition using GUID on my Mac Book Pro internal HDD (a 500Gb one) and installed Leopard (10.5) on it and Panasonic P2 drivers for 10.5 too.

On the field or at the office, when I have to ingest my P2 content in my workflow, I boot (or re-boot) my laptop with Leopard using the boot function in the System Preferences. Then I plug the Duell Adapter and insert my P2 card and import all my files on a dedicated partition or on an external LaCie Rubbed hard drive using FW800. Just like I was doing before upgrading to 10.6 !

This works perfectly !
