DTE for the HV20

What is a good DTE for the HV20. I assume it would be something that could be used on the Canon A1s or XLH1s as well?

The only firestore to use with the XHA1 or XLH1 series is the FS-C. I believe that no firestore understands the Canon 24F mode, except for the FS-C.

But you don't need to use the FS-C with the HV20, you could use any firestore HDV with the HV20. I do believe the FS-C will work fine with the HV20, so that's probably the one you want.

(at least, I think this is correct)

Glad you asked because I was trying to find the same information for the HV30.

I just looked at Focus Enhancements website and they have a chart of "Recommended" units to use with certain cameras and it implies that only the FS-4 HD and FS-4 Pro HD models are compatible with the Canon HV20/30.

Barry is right about the A1 and all other Canons being able to be used with the FS-C. But it is still unclear if this is absolute or just a "Recommendation."

Here is the chart.

My understanding of this is the FS-C is *required* if you want to record 24F/25F/30F footage.

The FS-4 HD could be used for recording 60i HDV (including from the HV20/HV30) but if you want to use "24F" (from your XLH1 or XHA1, etc) then *only* the FS-C recognizes that mode.

If anyone has concrete information to the contrary, please share. This was the understanding I got from a Focus representative.

I suspect that you are right about it being required. I would use whatever they "recommended."

It is still unclear to me if the HV20/30 works with the FS-4 in the 24P mode. Here is another page showing the recommended FS-4 for HDV and it talks about 1080i for HDV but I can't make out if this would handle the HV20/30' version of 24p.

For HDV recording it lists ".m2t 1080i 50/60." Does this mean it can or cannot work with the HV20/30 version of 24PF which as I understand it is different than other Canon versions of 24P or is it 24f?

I wouldn't think there would be a problem since the hv20/30 records 24 frames wrapped in 60i. It's just recording 60i, which is why you have to remove the pulldown to edit in a 24 frame timeline.

Agreed. Canon's "24p" mode is recorded as 60i, so any 60i HDV firestore should work.

The incompatibility is limited to the 24F/25F/30F modes, which are not 60i, therefore they need the special FS-C.
