Cool artist Arthur Ganson

Amazing. It would be great to weasel these into a scene or two.
I wonder how tricky (and costly) it is to get permission to use artworks in films. I remember in the commentary on the DVD for Sex, Lies and Videotape, Soderberg said the first time he was sued was because you could make out some artist's drawing or painting on the wall in one shot and it appeared without attribution or compensation. And you could barely make it out.

Yep, it would depend on the artist. I'm usually over careful about brand names, artwork, photos. Basically, I want everything in the frame to legally belong to my film.

I'm wondering if the process and issues pertaining to obtaining permission, release, etc. are essentially the same as for music, for instance, or if there is anything special in the approach to paintings/sculptures and similar works.

Timur, do you have Ganson's DVD? It's not clear on the site whether he shot these machine videos himself. I like them a lot, though I think more could be done with them.

he makes the mand shoots the mhimself i would think or maybe hires a friend or somehting.

Origionally i wanted to have my video business be like documenting Performance artists performances, and "dp" ing Video art works. like providing technihcal assistance to artists who may not know too much about proper formating.

I was doing that myself a long time ago, back during my first stab at doing video. It can be interesting, if you like the work or very frustrating and boring if you don't. If the artist views the video as an extension of the artwork or an additional artwork, you can end up in a bit of a struggle over how to control the shoot if you don't have a very clear understandging of one another's role.

It's easy for visual artists like painters or sculpters to assume that since film/video is a visual medium, that they will automatically have a good understanding and affinity for directing the use of the medium. And, of course, good visual design sense is important but insufficient on it's own to make good moving pictures.

well my idea was im like a rental camera with an operatorthat knows how to get the best picture out of it. what they do with the camrera is thero buissiness.

i was thikning of doing like, high quality DVD compression and Web compression too. so their work is well represented. maintaning quality.
