The "hacking and testing" has gone on for several years now. You think you can absorb it in just two weeks?

Or just make movies with what you know. Because that's where you're at.

And by the way, any DP worth his/her salt knows their tools inside out, tech wise and artistically. Not something to be garnered in a few weeks.
 
I think it is unnecessary to be so harsh. @jimmykorea was just pleading for some common clarity, and humbly admitted to be techy challenged. I am somewhat techy, but have had to spend lots of time learning about video compression to appreciate the incredible work that has been accomplished. Driftwood has focused on the creative aspect of film making @jimmykorea, his hacks have turned the GH2 into an incredible cinema-looking $800 camera that has successfully challenged multi-thousand cameras. My recommendation to you is to film some stuff using some of the hacks and appreciate it yourself. The thing about the creative aspect of film-making is that it is very personal and judgement of others may not satisfy you... Al
 
Tsk Tsk Tsk. i'm barely qualified to speak about film-making and even less so about hacking computers with lenses tacked on them, BUT i am qualified to address human factors issues, or as i like to call it HTPO.
I spent close to 4 years analyzing a thread on HV20.com that related to a firmware hack. i know a lot about the psychology of this stuff, about presentation of findings and even more about lesson plans and effective CBT.
A message to the star hackers out there:
- Get together and properly lay out the hacks as though you were writing a "Driftwood Hack for Dummies" book.
- In the Intro, explain the purpose of each feature BEFORE | AFTER with links out for further reading or background
- in the conclusion include troubleshooting tips and other relevant information.
In 10 years of studying online communities I've discovered that Billion of lines of banter are used to explain things that could otherwise be explained more concisely in a couple of hundred words.
Here's my mantra for today:
BUILD CUSTOMER-CENTRIC PARADIGMS, NOT SELF-REFERENTIAL ONES.
 
Please don't take this post wrong as I am a fan of the hack and of what Driftwood is doing,
but the picture linked in the original post, even though it has great detail it is not a good example of great skin tones.

Vitally answered a question I posted a few months ago about the hack and color. He stated that the hacks could not affect color (yet), have things changed?
Or are these new hacks more about trying to stretch the dynamic range a little further?

edit:
I've seen this before with the older gh1 and when people were experimenting with picture styles/profiles, also with the canon and one of the flatter 'greater' DR settings - skin tones suffer and become paste-y. I hope this is not the case with your new hacks.

I saw it all when I followed hacks of the PSP.
There's an element of wanting to keep the info obtuse and difficult to understand for 'noobs'.

Luckily, there's a lot of decent people who regularly produce easy to understand FAQs about the GH2 hacks.
The trouble is, we all want to be riding the crest of the wave and it seems impossible to keep up with the latest because the hack developers are talking in tech language to each other on personal view, not to the end user.

I followed the GH2 development closely for months up until December, but I've been struggling lately.
Cream rises to the top though, and hacks like Quantum 9b stand out and get a lot of attention.
 
haven't been around for a while, so can please someone just highlight me on the research and development?
- maybe i missed this, but those latest patches mean that there's a new ptools hack for the latest firmware? forgive me but i'm a bit confused.
- will there be any chance of a BEST FINAL PATCH?
i'm very lame on experiments and would really like to know if there's chance for all those researches to reach a definite ending point?

The hacks absolutely affect color in that with so much less macroblocking, your reds and blues are no longer buzzing with noise. Among other improvements.
 
Does VBR imply that the bit rate will adapt to the situation? For example, lots of items and detail needed -> more bit rate. Few items -> less bit rate.

Yes the latest PTOOL is for the latest firmware v1.1 for the GH2.
No there will never be one BEST FINAL PATCH, IMHO, so don't wait for it. Some settings are for the absolute best picture quality even if it means filling up an SD card pretty fast. Some settings are for PAL, some settings are for 24p, others are for 60p, etc. I don't think you are going to see one setting that will satisfy everyone; well, maybe the v1.1 firmware is satisfactory for you... Yep, the new firmware is hacked.
But the top-guns found they had to make slight adjustments in their best hacks to keep them stable on 1.1
Make sure you get their updated versions.
Plus you'll need the newer PTool.
There probably will never be a "best" hack because it seems hacks that make one thing better, like say 24P high detail, might make 720P 60f actually lose some performance...and vice-versa.
Although I think it is all boiling down to about 3 "best" hacks; one for 24p Hi-detail, one for 720P, and one for longer record times at a lower bit-rate.
I'm not saying these are done yet...but that seems to be where it's headed.

I agree nobody is hiding any of these hacks, nor is anybody trying to be obtuse on purpose as someone else posted above. You can ride along, learn and contribute, or stay away. Nobody is hacking to sell, this is the Internet at its best; either learn or contribute. Join and convince someone to write a Hacking for Dummies, if that's what you want. Don't just sit there complaining... Al
 
Unfortunetly, for many of us, in an era of highly technical digital equipment, you HAVE TO learn as much as you can about the equipment and its inner workings. It is not as easy, or difficult, as choosing Ektachrome over Kodachrome anymore. You need as much knowledge as possible about the technology to be a true artist in this medium. Be it with your camera as much as with your computer. And most importantly you need a lot of common sense in trying to comprehend whats going on inside this wonder imaging machines.

Or they could say here is a list of hacks, with a brief outline of its strenghts in imaging terms dowload links are here, please donate some money if they have been helpful.

I suspect there is some truth in the idea that very few people really have a broad knowledge of different hacks in non techie terms and can communicate it. All I'm suggesting is a friken forum thread with an update of widely accepted good hacks in one place, a pooling of knowledge basically....... I'm not asking for a 1000 page manual.

Another thing is not all of us are DP's some of us are one man band editors, producers, directors, and writers.. we can't all be absolute experts in all areas.


To illustrate my point I just grabbed the first forum entry from GH2 Personal view latest hack. Honestly you got to see the funny side of this..

A Pooling of knowledge is all I'm asking for in one place. If someone set up a website (though I know eoshd have already done that to some extent) with hacks and clear explaination it would get 1,000's of hits in the first week. Often the forums are not the best place to learn something as information is sprawled around, with contradictions of opinions etc, add the jargon etc and you go one big clusterf$%k of information. Like I said in my original post DVX User if often really good at helping me research and understand stuff but for this it hasn't set threads out clearly IMHO. People are confused why not help them?
 
This isn't a DVXuser-centric topic. We've debated how to handle hack stuff already, still working on it, but if you want to understand it then you should visit Personal-View.com and express your concerns there.
 
Thats silly, this is a GH2 camera section how exactly does it not relate to peoples experiences using the hack on the GH cameras?

Personal view is mainly guys who know the jargon who are working on developing it. Don't start making some sujects taboo on DVX User it dosen't help anyone.

I had to reboot my membership cause my hotmail was hacked. That's why my post count is low, however I've been a member on here for years when people were actually discussing the DVX!!

How is asking a question to understand something camera related trolling?

To the Jimmy Koreas of the world:

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

The hack is being developed for free and distributed for free with instructions available for free for anyone that can navigate a simple page by page flowing thread based website at Personal-View.com

I wish a consolidated and real time list of the flavors of the GH2 hack existed. But then I realized I would have to lead and make it, but that it would be a **** load of work, current and ongoing into the future. So I stopped dreaming about it and realized I was unwilling to do it for now.

So I don't lead. I follow. I update my GH2 periodically and just keep my ear to the ground sporadically.

You and all the other Jimmies of the world need to get out of the way. Please do not disturb my inner tranquility again by requesting that Driftwood or other people working on this incredible and free hack, devote time to dumbing it down for the WYSIWYG drag and drop drones of the world. There is no conspiracy to withhold this hack from the unwashed masses. Instead, you've conspired against yourself by expecting simplicity at every turn.
