C300: Dream... A new EOS C camera with RAW, high framerate, 12b and greater dynamic range?

Truthfully, I think the C300 is quite near perfect for the type of work I do. I shoot primarily for distribution on the web, and have found that C-log provides more than enough dynamic range and image control. Raw's nice and I love the near infinite options it affords you in post, but it'd be total overkill. If the C300 had a Raw mode I probably wouldn't use it so much simply because C-log is good enough on its own. Same goes for 1080p vs. higher resolutions. I love the idea of 2.5K and 4K, but the C300's 1080p is clean and sharp to my eye. Maybe not as sharp as Red Epic, but you certainly don't notice the different in a 1080p export viewed on our site or on YouTube. Again...non-issue for me.

The one major thing that holds the C300 back is the camera's slow motion functionality. 720p60 is useable, but for $14,000 new I don't expect "useable" features, especially when as far as I'm concerned everything else on the camera is totally amazing. I'd settle and buy two C300s just for myself right now if it had 1080p60, and it would be the truly perfect camera for what I do if it could do 120 FPS at 1080p.

I mean, come on. The iPhone 5s can do 120 FPS at 1080p. I get that's not a fair comparison because of sensor technology and architecture and all that jazz...but the principle still stands.

Yes. Let's not forget what we actually DO have access to today. It's all about finding a good match between what you do and what your camera is good at.

This is a 1Dc 4k to 2k frame grab through a window out of the Zurich TWR (ATC). Right click and open image in new tab to view at 1:1.

There are lots of lines/geometry here that could present problems for many sensors. Look at the cable hanging below the crane. It's perfectly rendered. I'm also very happy with general detail and tonality. And all of this from a DSLR that no one thinks twice about when I pull it up.

To me, amazing.

++1 With a read-reset faster for lesss rolling shutter. Then im totally sold!

Dream: 1DC mkII

-10bit or higher...
-in camera live wave forms
-120fps in 1080, 48fps+ in 4k
-dslr form factor with a few more video customizable buttons.
-perpetual mirror lock up even after a power down, or no mirror.
-2+ extra stops in the highlights.
-raw option, at least in 1080HD
-slightly (1lbs?) lighter body
-hdmi, audio connector on top or back, so the wires are not sticking into the EVF and making a mess or forcing the evf farther from the center of gravity. (I would prefer this over a flip out screen, but it would be awesome if they could make a ultra slim evf to attach and swivel on the side of the camera, and power by the camera.)
-global shutter. (or somewhere in the realm of Red - Alexa)
- Slightly more slanted hand grip (even for shooting stills I dislike the straight up down grip, but only slightly more slanted, like 10-25 degrees more)
- Same low-light performance.
- Similar battery life.
- .9 in-camera ND option
-A better picture style editor and a customizable ps with c-log color base.

Just as Sony and the XAVC codec Canon will also go 10-bit on the next generation. That will also open up higher fps and flexibility in what can be captured to internal cards. Until 2014/2015 this wont happen.

Ummmm finnegan, the iPhone does not have 1080p 120 fps. It's 720p.
I'm tired of seeing 120fps videos on Vimeo. No matter if the shots look gorgeous I end up skipping through the video every time if the whole thing is shot slowmo.
But the tec is there so I would expect that canon will next release a DV digic Iv and higher frame rate will be included.

There never will be a perfect camera guys.

There is no doubt in my mind the the 1DX is more than capable of 4K. Why are they so scared of magic lantern folks looking into the firmware? There is also no doubt that the 1DC is also super capable. Look at what has been possible all along with Canon cameras but has been crippled for various reasons. Magic Lantern has unlocked video features on Canon cameras that didn't have any available when they shipped. I understand the business of crippling products to protect the line, but that doesn't mean I can't be upset about it. Soon enough we will have Alexa quality at sub 10k press. Well current Alexa quality.

The C300 upgrade with some 10bit internal record. Canon produce AVCHD and 50Mbps long GOP records, would be nice to see the 10bit I-Frame only record (ProRes HQ and DNxHD185 10bit). C500 is ok with RAW option.

internal? who needs internal? even c500 cant do anything like that. I would be CRAZY, just CRAZY happy with any external options like that:

external 8 bit 60/50p over hdmi (as i understand not possible over sdi) for example would be a big deal already...

external 10bit 24/25/30 p , over i dont know - PAYED Hardware UPGRADE .... would be just super duper! yes stick 1 3G SDI in my cam instead of SDI

but 100% sure non of it is going to happen , 80 000 iso is best what they can come up with

Yes, why not make the internal record? New fast cards (or SSD) can record up to 185Mbps in 10bits (like BMC camera). Direct to FCX or Avid MC, without transcoding, for me best option and much better quality than long GOP, really cine camera with this option.

Why do we do this to ourselves?!

Sony seem to be pumping new hardware and firmware every time I check my twitter feed! By hey, we get 80000 iso baby! ;)

You may continue.

It's not the quantity, it's the quality.

Not saying that Sony doesn't have a few good cameras, but I'm definitely not interested in commodity cameras where the same **** gets shifted around and repackaged and re-branded all the time.

Every second year is a good pace. No one wants to invest lots of money and only months later it's obsolete.

I don't think that "scared" is the right word.

Since Canon is selling the 1Dc for $11995 or whatever it is nowadays, they don't want Magic Lantern to turn the 1Dx into one for free.

And once you buy a 1Dc you're kind of thankful for Canon's firm stance. Hacked 1Dx:es would severely hurt the value of the 1Dc's features and also 2:nd hand price.

I would LOVE a 1DC, or a C500 with 4k 60p raw recorder. For the former, 4k limited to max 24p/25p is about the only thing holding me back. For the latter, well...I just don't like the 3rd party recording solutions, but love the robust EF mount on the C500 and Canon lens compatibility.

I ask myself why I keep waiting on Canon to deliver and it comes down to owning so many of their lenses. Sony tempts with F700/F5/F55 but the holdback there is the 3rd party lens adapters I like even less than the 3rd party recording solutions for Canon, and availablity of 4k internal XAVC only in the F55. I think that will have to change but for now, it is the situation.

In the end, the waiting is forever and I would probably be best served by just selling off all my Canon lenses and abandoning the brand. They are not giving me what I want.

- 1dc with 29.97p minimum
- C500 with internal 4k codec (XAVC) or even mjpeg like the 1dc, 29.97p minimum frame rate.

I just don't like what's available in my price range.
Hoping Panasonic will jump in soon and solve this mess.

That is the normalized value at 8MP.

When measured pixel for pixel at screen resolution it's between 11 and 11.2 through ISO 100-800. And then it goes downward from there.

Well you are not shooting 22megapixel video are you?

You are shooting 2megapixel video so even with pixel binning and skipping, I'd say RAW Magic Lantern 5dIII has more DR than the C300.

Ah...Flughafen.....makes me get anxious for my next trip at the end of January......Andre, did you take this shot from your desk?.....and yes, the cable is perfect. Canon is an image company so they make great chips & glass. As for the next C300 and what could be on it, remember there was too much discussion about why the C300 didn't have 60p or slow motion in 1080. I posted the direct answer from the head of the design team that, at the time they made the C300, the Divic III "engine" was the best they had at the time they started the project. By the time the camera was introduced, the Divic IV was out but they could not "rip out the engine and put in the newer one" in the camera. So, what ever they come up with in the future will have a much newer engine (Divic 5? Divic 6?) that will be able to do more.

I'm shooting an 8MP, pixel for pixel 1:1 crop from the heart of my 1Dc sensor. No binning, no skipping and no Magic Lantern.

Hi Jim,

This is a frame grab from a short corporate production. Visiting my colleagues in the TWR. I work in the ACC ( area control center, working with radar) so we don't get the same view I'm afraid. =) It's one of the perks of working in a TWR.

Agree on the Divic. Next batch of cameras will get better frame rate options for sure. Don't think Canon will try to run out a lead the pack, but hopefully we'll get some good, usable options.
