Drama-Fest Information

I guess it's a little late to ask this, but how do I enter/upload my entry once it's done? I mean, we don't mail it to you, do we? Thanks
Oh and BTW, has the prize been named. Just wondering.

lol dont ask you'll just get "do it for fun" answer :-p

yes there is a prize but apparently you're not intented to have that be your goal but to be a something you get out of it if its good.... I still say some people survive on prizes or money made since some of us do this for a living and if it for something less than what thought you worked so hard for can be nerve wrecking but hey its not my room to where you say what you're getting. anyway do it for fun just be cautious of what you ask.... trust me.

around the deadline they will announce upload procedures.
usually they provide a link and you answer a couple of questions on that page and then the next page asks for your upload.

That is probably the way it will work this time, but it has been slightly different once or twice.

In any case, not too late to ask and no need to worry yet since the specifics have not been announced.

If you are not familiar with encoding a quicktime H.264 then you might want to figure that out sooner rather than later, though.

This is just what I was going to ask about tonight. I'm guessing compression is some closely guarded secret around here. I bought quicktime pro last night, and I'm trying to figure out the best settings for quality/file size. I've "wasted" the whole night so far running tests, and it's almost frustrating enough to just give up, but if other people can get good looking encodes, so can I.

But it would be helpful if someone would offer up some settings that work well.

Upload, prize, and voting info coming soon, everybody.

thank you. although, the best prize I can think of right now would be "larger file-size limit".

good luck, everyone!

Compression is going to kill me also. I've tried a few things all ready and they look like crap and are 100mb, dang it.

Barry S, Sweet I can't wait.

I used a preset in Compressor (with a few adjustments to make it a 2.35 QT Movie.) I'm very happy with the results. It's the h.264 800 kbps - ready for Quicktime 7 Download preset. The resulting file is 39 MB, which I think is small enough since last fest I recall most of the files being about that size. My movie (with credits and everything) clocks in at right about 6 minutes.

Is 39 MB too big???

Hm. Compression shouldn't kill you. H264 is a very GOOD codec and you can get wonderful results.

you can get wonderful results with H264, as many of the previous contest's entries prove, but it's not a "cut and dry" process. I've spent a lot of time over the past few nights messing around with quicktime pro, and it's difficult (for me) to predict what the results will look like.

I'm not even done editing yet, but I know I need to keep experimenting so I'll be ready to export correctly the first time.

good luck to all . . . .

DVX Only

DVX Only

Hello everyone, I'm just getting into filmmaking with some friends, and I've learned a lot just browsing this forum and reading the ton of information here. I haven't purchased a camera yet, but I'm very interested in the Canon XL2 (Mainly because I have a large selection of Canon lenses for my SLR and I want to be able to use them). I see that the community for the DVX seems much larger than for the XL2. Does this mean all these short film contests are off-limits to me because I'll be using an XL2? And is there an XL2 community out there somewhere doing something similar to this? An internet search hasn't turned up too much. I'm interested in submitting entries for these contests, I think it's a great way to focus your effort when starting out, making short films if you're not lucky enough to be able to go to film school. Thanks for all the info and keep up the good work!

- Brandon

you can enter the contests for exhibition only with any camera you want. You only have to use the DVX or HVX is you want to be eligible for prizes. And really, the best prize in these things is a peer group looking at your work, so go for it.

I have a question: how do you know if a short has been really shot with a dvx/hvx? I think the other cameras in those category can bring a similar image, so how do you know if someone is'nt cheating?

You have to submit a picture of yourself on set holding your camera.
Also the picture must be from scene that stays in your final cut.
You must send a hard copy of the photo which bears your thumbprint in the left hand corner.
