Drama-Fest Information

Question, and my apologies if this has already been asked. It will be everything in my power to have the h.264 file rendered out in time, but I seriously doubt I'll have the MPEG-2 in time ... the .zip file is supposed to contain both. Is there a way that we can get the h.264 loaded first/only, if that's all we have by the 31st at midnight?

The other thing is that I'd LIKE to have the correct master file for the MPEG-2 ... when the person that was uploading the P2 footage to their Mac did it, they set the project at 29.97, which apparently made all the footage 29.97. It appears to look fine rendering out to the 24P, but if you freeze frame in spots you can still tell the original file is interlaced ... I'd love to have the corrected version for the DVD, but that's likely nearly a week out as I MAY need to re-sync all the sound, etc., as well as try to match the current edit with a new one from scratch, unless someone knows a fix.

Of course, Jarred and Barry_S are the final say in these matters. However I suspect that since the large file is not for competition there should be no problem supplying it later.

Jack did that in the last fest Norm. He uploaded like an empty MPEG because it wasn't ready. I think it will be fine.

Norm,

Not sure if this helps or even if this was the right then to do, but for us when we tested some dvd outputs, to get our progressive footage to look smooth when there was fast movement we had to interlace the whole thing any way. So for the H264 we did progressive 24fps but for the DVD we did 29.97 Interlaced. Maybe we did something wrong but that is how we got it to work.

Guys--try to have your MPEG2 in your zip, but we'll give you a few extra days to iron out any problems. Just let me know if your MPEG-2 is going to be late. thanks.

I always render mine in Squeeze 29.97 Progressive.. I think it just adds the tags or whatever so on DVD players that can play Progressive footage it will, and on DVD players that can't it'll leave it 29.97.

Barry, I'm 99% confident our MPEG-2 will be late. Then again, IF I can't get this whole mess to work (trying to do a temp fix/submission for the fest), then I won't need to bother with the MPEG-2 at all. Eitherway, I'm gunning to at least get the H.264 file in today.

As far as 29.97, I hate it. I love 23.98/24P, and it'll just eat at me until we get this master file fixed back to where it should have been ... not sure if the ROI will be there for all the work involved or not, but I'll at least feel better about the final of the film that way.

As far as I know, all MPEG2's are 29.97, with pulldown for 24P progessive play on certain DVD players and computers, am I wrong in this thinking?

Hmmm... not sure but what I do now is that fast looking motion on our DVD tests would "stutter" like it would skip a frame when ever their was fast motion on screen (looked fine on our computer and even the LCD of the HVX) but when we interlaced in and then put in on a DVD it looked fine, not "stuttery". So maybe progressive would play fine on better DVD players and it does technically play on mine just not great.

But we could be doing something wrong.

My guess is that perhaps you're rendering the DVD for computers vs. the consumer DVD players. At least with Vegas, there's a bit of a difference it appears, because you can have a choice of what the intended player is to be, so I'm assuming it can effect it some.

My DVD's have the opposite effect ... they tend to play GREAT on DVD players, but typically not quite so well (or slightly stuttery at times) on computers ... but since my intended mass audience is on DVD players, I don't mind at all. And I always do mine as fully authored 24P DVD's.

my mpeg-2 will be late, but not too much. I can upload it tomorrow (Feb.1), unless I run into problems there, too. thank you for the grace period to work things out - I'm learning as I go.

for those that don't get the mpeg-2 in the initial upload, please hold off until the end of the week before re-uploading it. I'll get the upload page re-activated at the end of the week so you can send those.

Thanks,
Larry

I believe that all mpeg2's are interlaced, but not all are 29.97.

Whoo-Hoo!!! You know what I just realized?? It doesn't state in the rules that the films must be 24P/23.98!! I've been killing myself with this issue, only to look and it appears I can just go ahead & submit this as a full interlaced entry ... not what I wanted, but it should help it to look a TAD better than trying to do all this conversion to 23.98/24P.

Since I have to re-render the thing (forgot to even add the film title), I'll re-render it interlaced for now.

Now that it is the final deadline for the movies, I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone goodluck. Viewing all the webistes, I can tell that everyone has put alot of their heart's and soul's into this. AND THAT IS WHAT FILM MAKING IS ABOUT! I would like to applaud the DVX users.
Can't wait for the movies.
Leo

I have yet to begin uploading, my files are being rendered now but I'm on an older powerbook so it's slow. Is there an automatic cut off built into the server? Is it shutting off at 12:01 am Thursday? Anyone know?
