FS7: "DP decided he wants an F5 instead"

The Apple ads that state Shot on iPhone are absolutely shot using the phone. There have been other ads that were not so specific but the ones where they want to state, they really do shoot that way. When Apple introduced the Watch they did a series of commercials to show it integrating into people's lives and Apple insisted that the screen on the Watch never be composited into the shot. Every shot of the display was real on set.

UPDATE: I spoke with the DP today and he said he prefers the F5 over the Fs7 for the F5's better low-light capability. I guess I should have known that the F5 is better in low-light than the Fs7. If that is indeed the case.

[ It just occurred to me that one of you could be that DP. lol! ]

Is this true?

I thought.. F55 has a lower 'base' ISO and the F5 is the same as the FS7?

The F5 will not take a speed booster and the FS7 will, giving the FS7 an extra stop in certain glass configurations.

That's an odd one. There are perfectly good reasons to choose the F5 over the FS7, low light sensitivity wouldn't be one of mine.

never heard that before.. same ISO same sensor.. either he's been fed BS from someone else.. or it was some sort of excuse he came up on the spot.. of all the possible reasons this is absolutely bollocks.. maybe he isnt a DP after all..? I smell a director /art director/Stills guy masquerading :)

Absolutely the F5 is identical in terms of sensitivity. There's maybe even an argument to be made that the more recent boards and ASICs in the FS7 might gain you something there.

What do you mean by "more recent boards"?

I thought a "board" was something physical. As in "having a board go bad" and having to physically replace the board.

For example the Red Dragon and Red Weapon share the same sensor but when they repackaged it into a new body they took the time to update the processing components on the boards meaning the Red Weapon has better image quality and a better noise floor than the dragon even though they have the same sensor.

Yes, a circuit board is something physical. It has integrated circuits (ICs) on it of various types, as well as other assorted circuits like resistors, capacitors, diodes, leds, etc. An image sensor is a specialized type of integrated circuit that can be on a circuit board. The image sensor output has to go through further processing - analog to digital conversion (ADC), digital signal processing (DSP), and generally gets split and sent multiple places with different overlays and further processing. Two camera models may therefore share an image sensor IC, but have different ADC and DSP integrated circuits.

Since the FS7 was released more recently than that F5, it is possible that it's circuit boards have improved ADC and/or DSP circuitry than the F5, despite the F5 being a higher end model. Possible, but not necessarily the case.

But the Fs7 is alot cheaper.. either Sony took the hit to bury the C300.. or actually the processing isn't as good as the F5.. ?

Ah, now I understand. I thought by "more recent boards in the Fs7" you meant boards in the Fs7 more recent than the boards originally in the Fs7. As if there were boards being put into Fs7's that are updated and different from the boards originally in the Fs7. As in "have you performed the latest Fs7 update and installed the new Fs7 boards yet?"

Donny- My uneducated guess is that Sony took a hit on the Fs7 in order to cut into the C300's sales. Something Sony surely accomplished. I haven't seen any sales data, but I have to imagine that more Fs7's than C300's have been sold over the past two years. When I say "took a hit" I mean on their profit margin. I doubt that Sony is selling Fs7's at a loss. They just aren't turning the sort of profit they were with F5's. But they sell Fs7's at a frequency far greater than the frequency they ever sold F5's.

Check out my EPK work on this First Look for the film Deepwater Horizon to be released in September:

Most of that BTS was shot with the Sony 18-105mm. The interviews were shot with Canon EF zooms.

The film itself was shot with Panavision Primo-L primes and Primo zooms. Arri Alexa XT's. And a s*%tload of clear plastic camera covers that they went through like candy because of all the scenes with exploding / raining liquid mud.

Agreed.. you cant give a C300 away now.. lack of 4K was always going to kill it.. besides the totally crap design.. then they do the same again ! stick to lenses and DSLR,s Canon.. no clue how to make 35mm sensor video camera,s.. the Fs7 is the best bang for the buck thats for sure.. but there have been cuts compared to the F5 to get it there.. nothing wrong with that.. and it has been a big bonus for F5 owners thats for sure..

Feature set wise the FS7 has some distinct limitations compared to the F5. Even if (and we are speculating here) a few integrated circuits have been improved, that doesn't significantly alter the overall performance.

A couple other factors can come into play in the hypothetical situation we're discussing.

Sometimes a newer, better performing integrated circuit may also be cheaper than it's predecessor. For instance, the newer circuit may be being used in a wider variety of products, with a higher production quantity being run, bringing the per unit cost down.

Second, just because an IC may have features does not necessarily mean a circuit board or the current firmware enable those features.

Third, an IC switch may reduce or eliminate bugs found when using the prior IC.

And there can also be instances where circuit board design requires IC changes simply to fit the shape of the board.

So, those are some hypothetical scenarios where a company might make an IC switch.

Yes agreed good points.. thinking about it.. re the example of the F5 internal 4K,which Sony categorically claimed the F5 could never do due to hard ware limitations.. which was then proved to me total bollocks .. its cheaper to make everything the same but then hobble some features for cheaper models..

I said in another thread, I don't believe the processing in the FS7 is as good as the F5 and nowhere near that of the F55.

Donny have you ever noticed any moiré when using sharp lenses like your CN7 and F5 together?
