NATIVE FILES available for download at 720p60
(this is for those who are waiting for their camera)

More media straight off the card. They down and dirty shots so for workflow purposes you might find it useful.

TECHIE DETAILS
GH1 film mode = smooth
wb=daylight
iso 100
shutter 1/60
union sqr shot is cosina FD 50mm
(its an old lens that makes everything look vintage)
cars in rain is Canon FD 50mm at f.4
focus pretty close to infinity
SH mode so its 720p60

All original media, metadata and folder structure is stored on the SDHC card in a folder called PRIVATE which I have copied

Also I included quicktimes.
These were made with FCP Log & Transfer Downsampled to 480p at 2mbps

Very interesting. At last i was able to play with the files of this camera and i´m quite surprised because the image is quite good for a 1500 camera. A bit of color grading and i was able to achieve a very filmlike image.

FILTERS: levels adjust first, then a bunch of curves to give a more filmlike tone, removed the excess of blue tones from digital cameras compared to film stock, and some quick blur+sharpen to avoid excessive detail and aliasing
 
Hi,

I have a quick question: I´m not having any folder structure on my sdhc card, when I take it out of my gh1 and put it into my card reader. Everythings just in the root directory....jpegs, raws, mts, mov...

What about that? That´s not right, is it?

Try formatting the card in camera

of course I have folders on the card. but in the folder where I download everything with adobe bridge I haven´t.

Wow... Macgregor is back! Man I have not seen you around this forum in a long time. I really have enjoyed all the stuff you have worked on. And to top it off, you give a positive nod to this little camera of ours...

Where is the link to your site to check out your work?

Those vignettes with the artistically nude women were amazing!
 
What compressed format are you guys using for render? I test rendered one short clip less than 1 minute long with uncompressed format and the file size is 5 gb.
 
Are you on a PC? If you are looking for free versions try Lagarith Lossless or maybe even HuffYUV (Lagarith is more preferrable).

I would also look into Morgan JPEG2000 which is a wavelet codec like Cineform but not nearly as fast or as expensive.

I've used all of those as intermediaries in the past myself. It's just Cineform plays back faster.

I use FCP so I render out to Prores.
No need to render to Prores HQ as AVCHD is 8bit anyway
(unless you plan on some serious color work)

I did a test yesterday of Prores 422 HQ, standard, and LT footage transcoded from .mts in FCP. I put all three clips into after effects and extremely pushed and pulled the colors. I noticed no difference at all. In fact I even used "difference" as the blending mode and not a single pixel lit up. So for now I'm transcoding to Prores LT as the files are half the size of HQ. If anybody knows of something I'm missing I'd love to hear about it.

That sounds about right.
Only need to start with a prores HQ base if you need tp use AE to add gradients or smoother than 8bit comp elements.
 
J Davice, If I may ask. Do you use a lens hood on your 50mm, the reason im asking is because im having lots of flare and glare (or reflection) when using my 50mm 1.4 nikon, and also the 1.8 , almost always when i have a direct light coming into the lens , i see it mostly at night..Just thought maybe you can guide me and let me know if the hood makes that go away (in your case) and if yes, which one do you recommend buying

I don't have any hoods. Sometimes I use a mattebox + top flag but not often. Some nikon lenses will give more flare and ghosts than others. If you are shooting nikon there are great reviews here

Hi, I am new to this site, and also starting to learn video editing as a hobby (mainly home movies of my family). I bought the GH1 recently, and am trying to render 720-60p clips into 720 30p mp4 format using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. However, the output playback is not very smooth (a bit jerkey). I have tried the following project properties: HDV 720-30p, as well as "Match Media Settings". I am using "Sony AVC @ 10 Mbps" for output.

Rendering using Sony Vegas Pro 9 (free trail version) works much better, and gives a far better output.

Question: Which version of Sony Vegas are you using, and can you suggest any improvements to my workflow using Vegas Movie Sudio platinum 9? I do not feel like spending $500-$600 on Vegas Pro 9.
