Download via iPad?

Doubt it's possible, but is there a way to download the AF100, & GH2, media via an iPad, & put it onto an external hard drive? Maybe 5D2 media too.

How about other tablets?

I have some trips coming up that where I need to travel light. We'll have a DIT with a laptop for the heavy lifting, but I'd like to have an option for personal use, especially if I stay on after the jobs.

Thanks,
Bern

iPad isn't a viable solution due to its expensive and limited internal storage.
If there was some type of solution, you would transfer via card adaptor to iPad and then plug in a USB drive and transfer once again to that.
Also viewing the files afterwards wouldn't be an easy task, as im sure there aren't any programs that will read .mts. At least the ones i've tested on my iPhone (vlc media player, AVPlayer, yxplayer2, and CineXPlayer)

Your best and easiest solution would be to buy a cheap Netbook. Then you could even view the files and backup to a cheap USB HD.
We have an old Acer netbook that has a built in SD card slot.
Yes another brand tablet could be another solution, but you may be limited to what you can run on them, internal storage, limited USB ports, poor batt. life, and well... more expensive then a 7inch netbook.

In a perfect world, your iPad would receive the camera files via Bluetooth 3 and Wifi transfer them into a cloud storage or online connected computer. Also you could view and edit them in the iPad iMove app. 720p screen would allow you to also use your iPad as a HD field monitor...Heck give touch focus/tracking control for GH2 via iPad!

Thanks for your response.

I'm looking for the most compact solution, & have consider a NetBook, or MacBook AIR, but am thinking I might give USB-OTG on a try.

I tried changing this threads title, but it's not working, so will likely start another.

Kidding aside.... just buy extra memory cards. They're fairly cheap and hold so much.

would you imagine yourself editing on such a device or just using it as a way to get the media onto a hard drive?

I have a nexto drive which I purchased for work with P2 cards and I adore. My drive NVS 2500 also works with CF & Sd cards and so I use it all the time since I have both P2 cameras and AF 100's.

If I were traveling I would definitely take one of these devices in my kit since I do not like using the camera as an offload device for several reasons, especially when shooting P2. Managing SD media with the AF is less problematic since 32 GB is 3 + hours of 1080 HD which means the file management is less time consuming compared to P2 which at its highest data rate would be 35 minutes of recording time on 32 GB. With SD one does have the option of storing the cards because they are so cheap but that does not mean they are backed up.
With a nexto you can copy to the internal drive of the device and sync to an external drive without using the capture device ( camera) to do so. I find this way of working much more to my liking than using the camera as the media management device.

All depends on your production situation, how light you have to travel and how much shooting you actually are going to do each day, all of which impacts on the time you have to devote to file management.

I just checked out the hyperdrive link which seems like it could be a viable option for offloading. THat said, I have used the Nexto under some really tough field conditions and have not had any errors. The box really does everything it says it does and does it well, which is how I like my data handled. The hyperdrive device is certainly cheaper but at this point I don't know how well it works.

I don't either ... the Hyperdrive user manual is one of the more confusing documents i've read in a while :-)

yeah cards are soooo dirt cheap- pick up a couple more and save yourself the time/hassle.

Seriously, SD cards are now as cheap as high quality MiniDV tapes. Just stock up and get a good small weatherproof case to hold them. If you want redundancy, a $250 Dell netbook has 250GB internal, an SD slot, and a USB port.

I think he's looking for a portable device to get the SD cards onto a hard-drive for
later editing. Buying more SD cards doesn't really help ( unless I'm mis-understanding).

I punted.

Was close to buying a Nexto, but decided to hold off for this trip, & instead purchased a 13" MacBook Air. I wasn't comfortable not bringing a laptop, & didn't want to add a Netbook into my Mac workflow.

I really wanted the 11" MacBook, but the SDHX reader, & 2x larger SSD, sold me on the 13". I also picked up another eight 32 GB SD cards, bringing my total to 20, & I hope not to delete on-the-road.

The 13" MacBook Pro seemed pretty great, & costs the same as the Air, but the extra size, & weight, kept me from buying.

For anyone interested I started another thread on this subject, but this one had more legs.

Thanks for everyone's opinions!
