FEATURE: "DOWN AND DANGEROUS" - new update, one year later.

Hi,
This has been a fascinating and inspiring thread to read. Congrats on the film. I was just wondering if an external recorder was used with the Af100 on the shoot? And what was your basic post-production workflow? Any info would be much appreciated.

No external recorder. One was offered to me but for me, the benefit in image quality did not outweigh the extra effort it would require. we transcoded all files to pro res, sync'd to the sound mixers audio files and the editor hacked away at the movie. at the end I used neat video to denoise and deartifact the image, color graded it, and added a layer of genuine 35mm film grain.

Precisely what I did too Zak with my movie - nice work! denoiser2 seemed quite effective too. Banding was sometimes a pain in heavy grading etc .

Thanks so much for the info. I haven't used neat video or denoiser2 before so must look into them. Very generous of you guys to share your knowledge like this. Continued success with your films.

The reviews are really good! I'm sorry I couldn't make it out there, but I look forward to seeing it when it goes wide.

Sorry for the delayed response. The screenings in Phoenix could not have gone better. The festival gave us three shows over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our Friday night world premiere sold out. Our saturday screening sold over 80% of its tickets (at 11:30am), and I'm making a bit of an assumption but I think word of mouth also lead to a sold out screening on Sunday too. We were the only movie to have two sold out screenings so that was kinda nice. And the fest scheduled fourth show but we had left for home by then.

We made inquiries with local press that got us some time on morning radio and television just before the fest kicked off. I'll say this. A friend of mine described the Phoenix Festival like this and it's perfect: a lot of festivals get a lot of things right, but Phoenix is one of the few that gets everything right. from the parties and panels to the encouragement of the audience's. the filmmakers and cast get treated like celebrities, signing autographs and taking pictures with people who came out. it's unlike anything i've experienced. if you've got a movie, there is a small handful of regional fests I'd recommend and Phoenix is at the top of the list.

One of our most vocal admirers was Marvin Young (aka Young MC). I remember him as the guy who had a lot of compliments and questions during the Q&A. And afterward he introduced himself, all the while I'm thinking I should tell him that when i was a kid, one of the first things I made was a Young MC music video with my buddies. I didn't bring it up but we exchanged phone numbers and have spoken a few time because he wants to produce a movie. :)

Anyway, now I'm back home, working on improving some of the VFX and sound mix on Down and Dangerous. It's out to Lionsgate, Magnolia, Sony Pictures Classics, Drafthouse, and a dozen others. Not expecting any of them to pick it up but it should make enough of an impression on them for the next movie. Having good talks with a reputable company that is very optimistic about the revenue they can make us on cable video on demand later this year. And we have more festivals lined up:

Dances With Films (Los Angeles) May 30 to June 9 - Screening TBA
DeadCENTER (Oklahoma City) Fri June 7 @ 6:30pm, Sat June 8 @ 8pm

Myself and the core team will be at both.

Awesome news. I like the tidbit about the overall strategy:
This film will serve as a calling card and help get the next (larger one) made and possibly distributed/financed by one of the mini majors.

Fascinating...

Have some more cities/festivals to add to the list. Upcoming screenings include:

LOS ANGELES - FRIDAY MAY 31 - 9:30pm - Dances With Films - TICKETS
OKLAHOMA CITY - FRIDAY JUNE 7 - 6:30pm - deadCENTER Film Festival - Calendar
OKLAHOMA CITY - FRIDAY JUNE 7 - 6:30pm - deadCENTER Film Festival - Calendar
COACHELLA VALLEY - SATURDAY JUNE 15 - The AMFM Festival
LAS VEGAS - JULY 18-21 - The Las Vegas Film Festival

We're particularly excited for our Los Angeles screening. Most of the cast and crew will be there to celebrate the occasion, as well and many friends who backed our Kickstarter campaign. We're thrilled to have the rare opportunity to share it with so many of you on the big screen. It's also a good chance (if you ever wondered what you can pull off for less than $40,000) to join us there so we can answer all your questions during the Q&A.

TIckets for the LA screening can be purchased thru movietickets.com here…

Our producer (and my lifelong friend since 7th grade) Kevin K. Shah put together this recap video of our World Premiere weekend at the Phoenix Film Festival. We were so happy that a number of friends, backers, cast and crew were able to join us in Scottsdale AZ for an event I'll never forget.

And if you'd like to dig a little deeper, here is an edited video of a panel on the business and craft of acting featuring our own John T. Woods of DOWN AND DANGEROUS, but also Blayne Weaver and Patrick Day of FAVOR. Big thanks to Paul Osborne for cutting this together.

WEST COAST PREMIERE IN LOS ANGELES

If you are in Los Angeles, or will be on Friday Night May 31 at 9:30pm, make sure to get your tickets online while they are still discounted. The price goes up another $2 on May 30th. TICKETS >>>

And don't miss Blayne and Patrick's riveting performances in FAVOR a week later at the same festival.

Congratulations Zak! Looks like the movie was well received. It must have been a pleasure working with John as he seems invested in the project? Looking forward to seeing the movie when it's available on DVD.

Hi Zak, have you set a time limit for getting a traditional deal with SPC etc? What are you other plans alongside a cable video deal? Are you considering a theatrical tour using Tugg and or a DVD/Blu-Ray release or is that non-profitable...

LAS VEGAS!!!

We just got our screen time for The Las Vegas Film Festival and it's better than we could hope for.

Friday Night, July 19 at 8:30pm.

This is about a month away, but with three cast members being alumni of UNLV, we're expecting a nice reception and a packed theater. The festival has a party scheduled immediately after our screening starting at 10pm. Have a good feeling about this one...

Las Vegas will be fun regardless. And having those UNLV alumni is going to bode well for sure.

You're having a great Festival run those far. Congratulations on the continued success.
