FEATURE: "DOWN AND DANGEROUS" - new update, one year later.

p.s. Zak. I've always admired your work... even when we were divorced

What I admire most is that your desire to have your own, distinct voice is evident in your work. I understand this is going to be a departure from your usual style (at least what i am familiar with). I am very interested to see what you come up with.

I wish you the best of luck on this project.

thanks Jason. Gotta tell you, you've been incredibly generous with me already and that is going to go a long way toward giving this new picture the professional polish it needs. Can't thank you enough.

As for the campaign, we just crossed the 10% funded mark. My next goal is to race us to 25% as fast as I can. Statistically speaking, campaigns that reach 25% have a 9 out of 10 chance of reaching their goal.

Don't want to Jynx Zak, but 30K is honestly no longer a large number on Kickstarter: there are people that have raised 100K for original content feature films, and 50K for short films.

I'm broke but hopefully will be able to do something before the campaign ends.

Be right there with you soon!

thanks kholi. don't worry, i'm not superstitious. :)

really looking forward to seeing that next project of yours, if it's the same one you told me about, it sounds like a good bit of fun. and I'd like to be involved somehow.

Zak, I like what I'm seeing so far. Kholi, are your numbers true for projects that are not sci-fi or effects driven? Can you point us in the direction of the ones you're talking about? (If Zak doesn't mind)

Also, someone raised 50k for a short? Wow....

Absolutely. It has no baring on vfX driven material etc. In fact, people are connecting with dramatic material more so than not. Kickstart search these projects:Mosquita y Mari, Save out Asses, I AM I, Discworld (fan film, the video features Terry Pratchett himself), Cicada Princess (also a short), Winter In Blood. Those are off the of my head. Its early but I could name about five more after i've had my Reese's cereal. The important thing is networking. What Zal says in his video is exactly what this is: greenlighting your project one way Or another. So it's equally about networking and having a solid project coming to the table. Also, the higher number always seems more serious. It's a drop in the bucket for big wigs, but those people buying into your project will probably feel like they're about to get a lot foe their money. Oh, and pay close attention to Zak's awards. IMO the list is perfect for his project, and the values are set right where they need to be for an effective campaign.

Thanks Kholi. Big up to Reese's cereal. If it's as good as the peanut butter cups or pieces, I may have to try it out...

Took a look at the prizes again. I like the strategy. It looks like one should avoid high overhead (mailing physical items) unless the donor is contributing a lot of money.

Good food for thought.

Exactly. And Discs cost a decent amount to reproduce, packaging should be great. Zak's got a jump on that but the average will have to outsource.

the cost to deliver rewards must be considered in the goal, along with Kickstarters percentage.

I don't mean to sound negative, but just because a few projects have done it in the past does not to me actually qualify the statement that "$30k is not a large number of Kickstarter." Of course it is. It's not an impossible number, and you should dare to be extraordinary, but I hope there is a backup plan to get the project done, hell or high water (like your own $10,000 to swoop in with at the last minute)! I have done (and advised on) a number of KS projects and the fact is a great number of them do not reach their goals. Those are the projects that expect benevolent miracles from strangers, which can be how it works... but usually isn't.

However, I'm sure Zak knows this, and equally sure that his fairly-well-developed network will step up and contribute significantly. We are still talking about nearly $1000/day, which is still daunting.

The "middle" I was referring to was the psychological lull that usually happens with these projects after the initial rush is over, but before the tension of the countdown to the end. Lots of projects languish at that state and can get quagmired until you can find people to push the numbers back towards success – and that's the point where strangers often become interested.

I'll second Doug's idea. I'll pitch in some about half-way through the campaign.

$1000 heading your way.

I just fell out of my chair. I don't know how to express my gratitude adequately. Truly means the world having you back me and it's a massive step toward reaching the 25% funded milestone. Don't know if I spoke about this earlier, but statistically speaking, campaigns that reach 25% have a 9 out of 10 success rate. Which is incredible. At 16% funded in less than 24 hours, we are catching on like wildfire and slightly outpacing other campaigns that went for amounts at this level (I've done my research). The enthusiasm and word of mouth is growing, and even one of Kickstarter's most recent success stories (Dying to do Letterman) have been driving pledges by re-tweeting our campaign. I'm optimistic.

You can read about the 25% threshold here in an article by the founder of Kickstarter. http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-and-the-1-000-true-fans

For us that's $7500. We've just hit $4910.

And again, Jarred... Thank you.

Something I've always been curious about regarding all of these projects on Kickstarter, sayou you raise 30,000 for your film. In turn you sell your film for 75,000.

How is that number divided? Does Kickstarter get a portion? The pledgers?

Thanks!

Good question. These are strictly gifted donations. If I were offering a return on investment via Kickstarter, I'd be in violation of the SEC. Also, Kickstarter does not have an equity stake in the movie. They do get a tiny percentage of the money raised but only if the campaign is successful. But they would not enjoy any participation in revenue generated from licensing and distro deals.

Okay, i'm going to cool it online for a while. Just hit $5,000 in less than 24 hours and that is good feeling. I think we're pacing pretty well. Anyway, I have some revisions to make to the screenplay. And some more personal emails to write to a few HNI's (high net-worth individuals). ;)

Donated (wish I had more to give) and will help spread the word! Good luck! Can't wait to see this completed project. I know you will succeed and it will be great!

Was very impressed with the promo video ... quite professional, certainly would make me feel very comfortable giving even if I didn't know you and the excellent quality of your work.

Zack, that article with the 9 out of 10 stat was written in 2009. I wonder if those numbers are still accurate with Kickstarter becoming so much more popular over the years and the goal amounts skewing toward the more "unrealistic" as the crowd observes the success stories.

I'm glad people are doing research on this and building strategies. I hope to launch a project later this year.

Congrats on $5k in 1 day!
