Doubleclutch MV

Well, here is a rough cut of Doubleclutch's "videomercial" that John Hudson and I shot with the DVX... Directed by Kevin Carpenter and edited by Shawn, both of ExFilms. This looks great guys! I love the crane shots :)

Just to clarify, we had 2 cameramen on this shoot, one was me and the other was John Hudson. Default Scene file #6, all natural lighting atop a 5 story building in the heart of downtown San Diego.

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Great work guys...looks awesome!!!

What shutter speed did you use, really like it.

Congrats to John and the team 8)

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Shutter was 1/250. We were skeptical about using it since light kept fading but we really wanted that "feel." It worked out great!

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Great sticatto to the frame rate, what did you guys use for lights, any production stills of the lighting setup..and you guys in action ;D

Re: Doubleclutch MV

That does look cool!

No lights used. All natural (very overcast) with spots of sun popping in and out. JUst look at my SIG; that was what the light looked like. Shawn and I kept dreaming of HMI's...

The crane shots really do look great and just enforces the "moving camera" rule.

I see a couple shots that don't really work (composition and holding on the frame too long). From what I understand this is a rough cut (90%)? and there is still some stuff to be done, including adding a few frames of urban crap like bums or city people or whateva.

Wow. Stoked.

Bring on the critiques gentlemen, I am curious to know not onyl where we succeeded but where we dropped the ball!

GReat job again DAN, CASEY and SHAWN!

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Looks good. I liked:
- colors (overcast + some post?)
- great location!
- good performance from the band (taking in consideration that they look very young... I presume they perform live - a lot)
- great camera moves without overdoing it -- did you use crane/steadycam?

A few questions:
- how did you make the "rising" shot - crane?
- how many takes you made (ballpark)
- was it a 1 camera production? (looked like it)
- camera settings?
- is there something important you learned producing this video which you'd like to share with us?

Keep up the great work and keep sharing it!

Re: Doubleclutch MV

- colors (overcast + some post?)  YES EXACTLY
- great location! A GREAT LOCATION
- good performance from the band (taking in consideration that they look very young... I presume they perform live - a lot) YES EXACTLY
- great camera moves without overdoing it -- did you use crane/steadycam? TRIPOD & CRANE

A few questions:
- how did you make the "rising" shot - crane?  YES EXACTLY
- how many takes you made (ballpark) 35 to 40
- was it a 1 camera production? (looked like it)  2 CAMERAS
- camera settings?  DEFAULT SCENE 6
- is there something important  you learned producing this video which you'd like to share with us?

I think we could have taken better advantage of having 2 cameras.  We had originally wanted to get some LONG SHOTS form across the street on another rooftop.  Coverage was important and I think we got what we needed.  We shot 2 different sides of roof because the lighting dictated this.  Although we had a crane and tripods, I would loved to have had some kind of dolly shots.  I am going to look into getting a dolly, whether it be a wheelchair or the guerilla skateboard wheel variety!

Again, this is a rough cut, almost done, but will be intercut with some addtional shots of STREET/URBAN life to break up monotony of SAME SHOT FOOTAGE.

Re: Doubleclutch MV

suggestion: you might want to use slomo/different palette/shutter speed or otherwise find a way to contrast the intercut urban footage.

40 takes! consider yoursef a hero just for keeping the band and crew from going insane for this time!

cant wait to see the finished video.

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Yep it was a long shooting day but spirits were high. Espcially once the pizza and donuts came everything was cool ;D Oh yeah and i cant leave out the totally bitchin' free Gangstarr gear!

John I agree that the cameras could have been used to get different angles since it was a little restrictive being side-by-side. I think we pretty much covered what we needed.

Aandre-contrasting the intercut urban footage is a good idea. Helps deviate a little from the band. John, when were you guys planning on going down to the city to do that stuff?

Re: Doubleclutch MV

wow..looks better than I thought it would. Cant believe you got away with no lights/bounces. The only thing I would change in the editing you have 2 crans shots go over the drummer, I would kill one of those.

Re: Doubleclutch MV

"Congrats to John and the team"

"All Right Hudson!!"

Geez people, at least give John a LITTLE credit here  :P

Re: Doubleclutch MV

Congrats guys! Looks great! I like the shutter speed... very effective. It'll look even better once the b-roll / urban funk is in place ;D

I agree.

Also, there are couple frames that seem to hold too long or don't work composition wise. I do know that CASEY (EXFILMS, DIRECTOR) is tweaking it as this is a rough cut. And like KAI said, adding the URBAN FUNK will really enhance it.
