DOF Question....

So Im thinking about buying a Letus for my DVX but I'm not really sure if I should make the purchase. Are there any new cameras out there that would provide the same look as a DVX/letus look without the hassle of using an adapter? Can anyone suggest any cameras? Price is not a concern!! Thanks!!:dankk2:

RED One, Genesis, Arri D21, Dalsa Origin All have 35mm sensors I believe. As with the upcoming Sony F35.

No disrespect intended, but if you have to ask then I can tell you these are too much camera and too much $$$ for your situation.

I've got a $50 adapter that threads into my 72mm ring on the 100B which produces a similar 'affect' of blurred background, while foreground remains sharp.

Pretty nice look.

It's a two piece item.
Add the second part and it becomes a .6x wide angle.

Good luck with your search.

Excuse me, where did you get such adapter? Please give us info about it.

My thoughts exactly lol. I read your first half, looked back at her (??) post and was like "if she has to ask, she really has no idea what shes getting into." Then read your second half and laughed.

Wouldnt we all want a Red cam?? Mmmmm

Here's the dealio!

You have two options: Still Lenses or Film Lenses. And you really have no idea what you're getting into if you can't answer this question already. However, I'll still give you my low down.

Film lenses aren't an affordable option for a DVX shooter. These are 10s of thousands of dollars for the primed lenses alone and this doesn't even include the price of the camera. A good quality zoom lens is $30,000+. So that puts buying out of the question mostlikely for you. Renting perhaps, but still you'd have to factor in the training time and what not.

Still lenses are affordable and give you a decent quality image. Albeit you're going to get some breathing and have to hassle with adapting these to work with your follow focus, it is really quite possible to do!

So you can either shoot with an adapter or... purchase one of these new 35mm photo cameras that shoot video and shoot with that.

Pinksand23,

This is about as much help as you're going to get here. Mostly sarcasm and uninformed judgments. I don't ask questions on this site anymore.

Try: http://rebelsguide.com/forum/

They're good people and willing to help. Stu is a great resource.

Bro, seriously? Its no sarcasm or uninformed judgement. If she/he has to ask such a thing, then price should be a concern. A lot of people getting into the whole film thing for the first time start their posts exactly like that. "Price isnt a problem" "I just need the 1 solution" "Doesnt matter what I have to go through"....and they are 99% of the time, WRONG, because they really have no clue what they are getting into. How many thousands of dollars was I able to save, because people posted their honest opinion?

I agree completely with this statement. I was that guy myself. The thing is that people need to learn to use the search feature on the site. Or to use google and do a site search. There's a wealth of knowledge on here. I guess people just get tired of answering the same questions over and over again. Look at how many people tried to post the news about the Canon 5D Mark II for example. You gotta utilize the searching features as well as read through the "New Posts."

Anyway, sarcasm or not... he/she still got their answer.

Pinksand23,

As you can see, there are a lot of people more concerned with chat rooms than filmmaking. They will also decide your finances for you and tell you what camera you can handle. I don't know what your financial situation is and i don't care. But, when members feel they have to LOL and comment on a comment...its time to move on. You can get respectful replies in other places.

I, for one, wish you the best of luck.

I don't understand the animosity. We answered their question. We gave them solutions for a low-cost budget (Adapter or dSLR) and for high-cost budgets (ARRI).

Why would you not comment on a comment if you agree or disagree with that commenter?

As far as I can tell, you only referred a user to another forum without actually answering their question.

So please do not put DVXusers, REDusers, Scarletusers down. We're good people. There are many professionals in our midsts from professional DPs to sales reps for major corporations. We have people who do this for a hobby to people who make a living in filmmaking.

DVXuser is one of the best resources on the net. 1,357,204 posts cannot be wrong and the 40,220 users on Dvxuser do not wish for this site to be considered as a social chatroom but rather a forum and community to get the answers they want and need.

Well regardless of what people like to say - since an honest answer isn't enough sometimes apparently for people like Metro....

But really - the DVX and Letus combo is your best bet. There is some hassle yeah. The unit is bulky, it needs a lot of light. But it gives a nice look. We shot our entry for Twilight fest with an AG80 - the little brother to the DVX and Letus. Maybe not the best choice of cameras - but I didn't feel like footing the bill to get a Genesis up here.

People have different likes with cameras. The RED ONE has a 35mm DOF since it has the 35mm Sensor. The lowest option you can go for that look is most likely the new S16 camera, the DII I think? And that is 10K. A 2/3 sensor camera would give you more DOF than the standard 1/3 camera. The HPX500 is an option for that, 15K to get her running.

Or you can buy the F23 with Digiprimes, which is 400,000K to get running. Or the F35, which should be close to 500,000 to get running when it hits the market. The RED can be running for under 100,000.

There are a lot of options, many are out of price-ranges. I have shot with adapter cameras, the RED, some of the CineALtas - with the exception of the F23 and F35. And each camera has it's issue. The RED has a great image, but ***** to edit with. And it is a finicky system. It has the personality of a toddler. The Panavised F900 is great too - but she is massive. The F23 is even bigger and heavier.

So contrary to what some people say - we do help here. There are a lot of really talented and well-versed people here. And yeah - sometimes we do get snide remarks, or people are assholes. I have been on both ends of the spectrum. Most of the times when I am an ass occurs when people talk about film when they have no idea how film actually works. Or when people try to pretend they understand how the expensive systems work.

And another option is to shoot film. 16mm isn't that expensive. I mean - there are a ton of options. It's just what your budget can do.

CHeers!

WTF?! So why are you still here, posting such bullsh*t? Get out and stop flaming! If you don't like it, then just leave. What keeps you here?

This board is full of great people, willing to help others in so many ways! I've met some incredibly generous people here. And the moderators also do an amazing job and put alot of work into this community. Your comment is disrespectful to those people and just makes you look like a fool.

And Simon - thanks for quoting that. I totally forgot that he was breaking forum rules. Spam and improper advertising.

(We self moderate too - and we don't like it when people slam the site and especially it's people)

Metro - consider yourself reported.

I have directed folks to sites before. JR Hudson's Cineobscure and other sites and the mods were just fine with that. Report away....I'm done with this thread anyway.

if price is honestly no concern, then there are many options for 35mm dof. To me though, the crux of your question isn't the price (since you say thats not an issue), it's that you want the look without the hassle of the adapter.

I can tell you that, price aside, shooting with a DVX/Letus combo is MUCH LESS of a hassle than shooting with any of the bigger cameras. All of the cameras are physically large and heavy, require larger heavier tripods, wrangling all the data from these cameras is a huge hassle compared to minidv tape, and you don't get internal ND filters, which means you need a mattebox and glass NDs that need constant switching (god forbid you scratch them!) and the mattebox/bellows need to be removed everytime you need to change the lens.

I have a RED ONE which is comparatively smaller than most 35mm options, and my current configuration, modest compared to many other people's, it about 30-34 pounds. This things is a ***** for me to carry around for more than 10 minutes or so before my shoulder begins to shake. And there's no real easy way to hold it low slung, like you would a DVX.

So believe me, if you want convenience, stick with the adapter. If you want higher quality, there are options, but they will be much more expensive and MUCH more of a pain in the ass to work with.

IMHO its worth it of course, but I acknowledge the added "hassle". :)

I picked up a static adapter off of a member on this forum. He didn't build it but another guy on this forum board named Twolik (i believe) did. I'm not sure if this guy sells these things but i'm more than happy with mine. There's not much light loss and with a 50mm it's easy to create a shallow DOF. Here's a link to playing around once i picked up my DVX100B
