Does the new 25mm Panasonic lens have stepless aperture? Model H-X025

I'm hoping for a quick answer so I can order today. I have looked online and found one site that claimed that it does but was not able to find any other sites confirming it. Thanks in advance!

You need a manual aperture ring to get clickless aperture adjustment. The Panasonic does not have one, aperture is adjusted electronically. I do not own the lens, but judging from the kit lens, I imagine you can adjust aperture while recording, but only in the standard f stops, meaning exposure will jump and not change smoothly.

There are adapters for some lenses for use with non native formats that could provide stepless aperture, but you are looking at a native m43 lens sitting on m43 camera.

Hi Stoneinapond, thanks for the quick reply! What I mean is the internal electronic aperture, is it stepless? In other words, let's say you have the camera set for auto-exposure, and you turn the camera from a dark subject to a bright one, or vice-versa. Does the iris change happen in a smooth fashion or in noticeable steps? Maybe all native MFT lenses do this and I'm just confused/ignorant about it. I've only worked with the kit lens, and even not that much with it, particularly not this kind of scenario. Thanks again!

I wish I could answer that question for you but I always work with the camera set to Manual mode when shooting video. And I'm assuming you're asking the question in the context of video. I also don't have my kit lens with me right now to test it, but you say you have the kit lens. Try out your scenario with that lens. I'm pretty sure they work the same way under the same setting.

But don't go by my word alone. Hopefully someone who has the lens will chime in.

Yes, in the context of video. I will definitely try some tests as soon as I have a chance, which unfortunately is not until Wednesday. I will just go ahead and order the lens and return it if I don't like it for any reason. It's supposed to be a great lens though. I suppose that if it's not stepless I can keep it in manual mode like you do. It's just that I'm going to be shooting documentary style video on Friday and wanted to get an idea of what I would be running into, but that's what the tests will be good for. Thanks again!

Thanks Stone and Philip! Unfortunately I had already ordered by the time I had seen your message, Philip, but like Erik I will keep your site bookmarked for future orders!

Whoa, that's a good price. Bookmarked for when I'm ready to buy one.

I did the same thing! When I am able to purchase a GH2 kit this lens will be on my list, really good price!

Edit: I see the price has raised to $529.95, was wondering if the $499 deal is gone :(
