I need my footage to b in SD....after i render it appears softer...am i doing something wrong????

im using sony vegas 8...ok this is how exactly i did it...i used neo scene to convert to AVI then i color corrected it in vegas...i noticed that when i render as quick time it maintains the sharpness but as AVI pal dv it becomes softer...never seen this before!!!!whats going on?

It's the 'dv' part of the AVI file you're rendering out at which should give you a clue. You've gone from a 1080p format to mini dv. Try to find a lossless pre-set to encode to.

Yes, do NOT render to Sony's DV codec unless you plan to dump out to DV tape (its the only plausible explanation to use that profile). You can choose Sony XDCam or one of the AVC encoders (Sony AVC, Main Concept, etc), or go with H.264 like Dave over at learningdlsrvideo recommends.

Check with your broadcaster - they'll have a tech spec sheet you will have to adhere to for your deliverables. Some can be quite detailed in bit rate requirements for file deliveries, audio peaking levels, legal video levels and so forth. Bad news if you get a tech failure for any reason, and it will cost your client extra bucks for any subsequent tech reviews.

my end product is meant for broadcast.....i think they only take AVI?????

You have to understand that AVI is only a universal container for other codecs. You can produce AVI's through a variety of codecs, like h.264, DVIX, XVID, Sony, Intel, Etc. Compression schemes and quality will vary from codec to codec. What everyone is trying to tell you is try encoding to AVI using a different codec and not the one you are using, or check your quality settings. With the limited amount of information you have given thus far, there could be a variety of scenarios of why it doesn't look good. Just like everyone else does, you need to experiment with some things and potentially need to download additional codec packs for additional options to render with. Try outputting only like 10 seconds of the video in differnt formats to check the accceptability of the results. When you go to "render" in Vegas, you can change the settings under "settings" or "options".
