Does 550D have the exact same codec as 5D?

I want to test edit 550D material on Avid MC 4.
Is the 550D codec the exact same as the 5D codec/material?
Or do I need to test both 5D and 550D to be sure?

the final output is the same codec, but the way the picture is encoded is different, so you get the same specification file with a diferent quality (lower on the t2i)
it is like filling a bottle with different content, if the matter is to open the cap, you do not really care about what is in the bottle.
On the other way, if your problem is mixing the content of different bottle, you could have some concern about the content, to see if they match.
anyway you can hardly work directly with files produced with thses DSLR, the best would be to convert first to a better codec.

I will transform the material to DNxHD to edit.

My question isnt about quality. It is about numbers: does the 5D material e.g. have the same bitrate as the 550D material?

Wow... it sure sounds like you know what you are talking about.

I think the 5d has a few different qualities over the T2i. Better low light performance, meaning less noise in higher ISO scenes, and wider FOV versus the same lens on a t2i.

I've seen lots of 5d and 7d footage mixed without any issue at all.

I don't think "mixing the contents of these bottles" will prove problematic.

This is NOT about 5D vs 550D this is only a technical question about postproduction:
when I test material of the 550D and it works, can I also use the 5D material with Avid without problems?

As far as I know all canon DSLR footage (550d, 7d and 5d) are the exact same format.

At different bit rates. The 7D and 550D work at a higher bitrate than does the 5D. I've used material from all the cams in Avid just fine. And I've used both 5D and 7D material in Avid MC4.

+1 to Perrone. The 5D was first, and I believe it has a slightly lower bitrate than the others. I don't remember exactly, but I think there's a 5mbps difference, so it's like the 5D is 40mbps and the others are 45, or the 5D is 45 and the others are 50.

Thanks!

So if material from 550D works I take it 5D material also works with MC4.

Perrone: do you transform to DNxHD or how do I get best quality output?

The 5D is ~42Mbps, while the 7D/550D is ~48Mbps.

And both will work just fine in MC4 when transcoded to DNxHD. If I am doing a quick edit, I will bring in the files via AMA. But I don't think that is possible with MC4. I am on MC5 now. If I am going to do any real cutting, I transcode to DNxHD as it's faster and more robust.
