Do you try to comment?

Just curious as to how many of us who have entered our films take the time to view the other entries and comment?

So far, personally I've commented on about 90% of the entries and I'm working my way down the list... but there are some entries where the filmmakers have commented on no one else's films but their own. That's a bit of a turn off and I'm tempted to NOT comment on entries like that.
 
my reviews are slowly making their way to each thread, but more importantly, i wanted to be sure to view all the films and give them an honest rating (before the deadline). with that accomplished, i will now concentrate on my reviews...
 
Viewed, voted on, and reviewed every film in the fest. I'd say my job is now done. Time to get back to work on other projects, school, and enjoying St. Patrick's Day. :beer:
 
I watched and commented on about 90% as well. some of them a few times. If you are in the fest and want some feedback it is probably a good idea to comment on other films as well.

Most of the people I wanted to watch and comment on my films did so and I am thankful for that. And I got some great critiques and compliments.
 
While the comments are a huge benefit of this fest and are greatly appreciated by the filmmakers, it is not a requirement of the fest.

Whatever your personal view on the matter, I would recommend you follow that pattern and not base it on whether another filmmaker comments on others or not.

There are many reasons why people may not be able to participate more, but they still were able to make and enter a film and should not be penalized because for whatever reason they are unable to spend the great amount of time required to provide coherent feedback on the other entries.


Again, I re-iterate, it is one of the largest benefits of these fests, but it is not a requirement for inclusion. If you are able to make time to comment, please do so based on that fact alone, not whether that person commented on yours, or others, entries.

And, on the flipside, if you watched a film (whether you entered or not) it would be good to drop by that films thread and let the filmmakers know what you thought (be constructive, this is not a pissing contest)
 
I only said I was tempted not to comment. I still went ahead and commented anyway. It didn't lessen the my rating... just makes it feel like they are less involved and just here to compete.
 
personally, i am not here to compete in any way; i'm here for the workshop atmosphere. i have a long way to go before i get competitive. ;)

i will make the time to review and comment on every film. it's the least i can do.
 
I don't like the suspense of having a ton of views with only a fraction of feedback from the approximate number of viewings per film as averaged. Haha, just kidding. It's certainly making me nervous for our entry, though. I really doubt we stand a chance to make the finals, but even if we only got one positive review, I'd still be a nervous wreck, because, well...that's me!

But anywho, I'm off to an exam. Good luck to all. :thumbsup:
 
I wasn't trying to single you out, that's why I didn't quote your original post. But since you made the comment I wanted to give the info I did for others who may be considering the same thing.

I'm sure there are some who are here just to compete ... but even they can benefit from the rest of us giving them solid feedback :)

This is the best reason for entering a dvx festival, and my number one reason. To get involved with other filmmakers is my number one concern.

But since we live in America, and competition is the driving force of all of our lives (whether you admit it or not), so there of course comes frayed nerves for me and probably for some others.
 
I sincerely believe the feedback is the biggest prize of all. Winning is nice side benefit because you get cool equipment for your next film.

This past week has been a blast.

I commented on about 90% myself, burned out and continued, but only viewed and rated the rest.

I would never change my vote for another film based on whether or not they commented on mine (or even what they thought of mine).

Still, I am a little disappointed that some of the filmmakers didn't comment on mine, as I really loved their films, I respect their talent, and I wanted to hear their thoughts about mine.

These were my exact thoughts from TwilightFest...I was really looking forward to comments from the 'Big Guns'.:(

I've actually watched your film about 4 times and its a shame more people didn't chime in, but on the other hand that could be a good thing. There might not be much to criticize. :thumbup:

I would also like to add that it maybe a matter of taste. Someone may not know how to review something like your film. Apparently, action and funny are 'in.' Sad times need a good laugh.
 
My brother (themacb) is busy -- so I have kinda taken the reigns in participation.

But that said: I don't want to comment on someone's piece because i feel compelled to.
I spoke to those that I felt like I could add to.
Some of the movies I really didn't think there was anything new to say -- and in some cases, i didn't really feel like there was anything constructive for me to say.
So I chose not to say anything, because I feel like it's better that way.

Too often in my real life I witness or receive compliments that people don't really mean (especially on a set), as well as "criticisms" that are not fully thought out or even true.

We all like getting comments -- i know I do -- but it's so much better when they're completely genuine and thought out.

Word. I'm havin a ball.

I desperately tried to watch, rate, and comment on every single one. By the end of last night, I was so burned out and it was LATE (pushing around 2am by the time I finished), I simply watched & rated, and then went through & found the specific threads for approximately 10 or so films (the only ones I hadn't commented on), and let them know that I did watch & rate, and that if they want a review to PM me.

I've rec'd 2 PM's today, which I'll take the time to watch their films yet again & then give a fresh review.

If I'm hoping folks will comment on my film, it's the least I can do for everyone else's as well.

There's a couple of folks that I've commented on their film, and they didn't even acknowledge it when commenting back in their own thread, and haven't taken the time to do the same in mine, but oh well. Has to be expected at times.
 
Well I'm not saying comment in every single thread, but if there's something you really enjoyed about a movie, stop in and say so. how can that hurt?

Some of us will try to comment on every movie (10 more to go!), but it is a HUGE task and shouldn;t be undertaken lightly. Hell I still have to respond to some comments in my own thread, and that gets daunting very quickly.
